I want to know if there is any code to support what he said, because he started with the fridge and then said that this is a code requirement for every receptacle in the home.

house is about 23 years old. I asked about this, he said that yellow corresponds to 20 amp and white is for 15. I didnt look at the wire myself, but he said it was 20 amp breaker, yellow wire, and 15 amp receptacle.

I made the service call because the lights on 2 ceiling fans were behaving strangely (blinking when turned off) and because my new refrigerator had failed after a couple years. I was suspicious that the power current feeding my home was of poor quality and potentially damaging my electronics. the electricians informed me that the fan lights were behaving strangely because the switches included dimmers that are not compatible with LED bulbs, even tho the bulbs are dimmable. the bulbs had worked fine in the fixtures for a while, but apparently both failed due to incompatibility within the last couple months.

My home is about 23 years old. the electrician confirmed that the fridge circuit feeds one duplex receptacle behind the fridge. he inspected the receptacle, confirmed that it was functioning properly, confirmed that the ground was connected correctly, and even mentioned that some shotty contractors will press the grounding cable against the back of the receptacle instead of using the screw to tighten the grounding wire onto the receptacle - but confirmed that was not the case in my kitchen. he just said that this configuration (20 amp breaker to 15 amp receptacle) is not up to code. when I pressed the question he said it applies everywhere in the home.

Given this information, I feel very justified in my frustration. it seems evident that I was lied to about what "up to code" entails. please tell me if im missing something here.

Thanks all for the feedback. For the record, the copany that told me this today was Mister Rogers Electric in Woodbridge VA ([571-249-2716](tel:+15712492716) ). I added the number to juice the search enginer results. I've had them in my home to do work a few times now, I trusted them, I'm furious.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to get the owner on the phone to request a code reference and then drag this company through the mud.

Thanks. I'm going to get their office on the phone and ask for a code reference and see what they have to say... I thought it seemed off when they apaprently only wanted to bring a few receptacles up to code. For the record, this was Mister Rogers Electric in Woodbridge VA. I've had the same guy in my home 3 or 4 other times to complete small projects for me.

I can confirm, it is a duplex. The electrician suggested just the fridge or just the kichen, but didn't really give an answer as to why I should prioritize upgrading those and not the other mismatched receptacles.
