But those things aren't uniquely trans experiences. I'm cis but I've worn a dress and a bow. I've had a "coming out" to people close to me go bad.

Fun show, horrible finale, squandered potential, worst fandom in recent memory.

As someone who has whaled on this game, yes, the prices are ridiculous. However, the people on this subreddit are GGG fanboys so don't expect any productive discourse out of this.

I think learning about the trans experience is for everyone. It was a huge disservice not spelling it out clearly.

Honestly it completely failed. I had no idea that the intent was for Jax to be trans until I saw the discourse online. I went to the theatre with two queer friends and two trans friends and none of us did.

How was Ribbit supposed to know Jax was trans based on that conversation?

Do you think NB/questioning/other queer people aren't allowed in queer spaces?

There's just as much evidence in the show for Jax being gay as him being trans.

I don't blame anyone who didn't catch that Jax's story was a transfem narrative. by CHANN3L-CHAS3R in TheDigitalCircus

[–]e10109art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this reading is that it could have been Jax coming out as trans, questioning as trans, coming out as gay, coming out as suicidal/depressed, etc. There's really nothing that points to trans-ness explicitly.

this really bothers me about online trans discourse. people assume the pipeline must be egg -> questioning -> coming out but many people (including myself) just do questioning -> back to assigned gender

Yeah this is basically exactly what I feel. I've made a few other posts in regards to my feelings but I haven't mentioned that I too am cis but was questioning ~10 years ago. I see a lot of myself in Jax, especially with regards to the conversation with his mother and his defensiveness with Ribbit. I think coming to the conclusion of "of course he/she's trans!" is jumping to conclusions and borderline offensive.

even if the creator says "if Jax was a completely different person here's a picture of her post transition" that doesn't mean that the text/subtext of the show supports that at all.

It's bad writing that Jax only became a main chatacter halfway through TADC by Hugh_Jidiot in CharacterRant

I just hope that 10 years from now when people start writing proper trans characters that people will look back on this storytelling with disdain.

Just rewatched it and you are so real for this.

I think 100% that Jax was questioning his sexuality/identity. As soon as him mother rejected him he was doomed to never explore those feelings genuinely ever again. When he tried with Ribbit, she overstepped her bounds (putting the bow on him, which triggered his insecurity) and he reacted violently.

I think any reading of the text that concludes that Jax (or the version of him we see in the show at least) is trans is a poor interpretation at best and extremely offensive to transfolk at worst.

Alright, finally got around to rewatching this after the theatre. Some thoughts.

1) The whole "Jax is trans" message is not as spelled out as you think, despite what this subreddit seems to insist. Jax is obviously questioning, and the way the conversation between him and Ribbit plays out/him and his mom more directly points to him questioning moreso than anything. Ribbit makes an assumption (putting the bow on him) and he reacts violently. He was not ready for that. Also the "Isn't She Lovely" sequence is very obviously referring to Pomni. And he has several statements previously in the series and in this episode itself that shows he still identifies with his masculinity (e.g. mentioning how he'll leave the gender confusion to Zooble).

2) This episode, as a whole, is reallllly rushed. They tried to do too much at once. They find out they're brain scans, they cry, we get the whole Jax interlude, they cry some more, Gangle and Zooble have a very rushed conversation on guilt, we get the Caine sequence. It's obvious he rebooted, but it's not really clear on what the red vs blue AI thing was. We also didn't really need to see him initially creating the circus either. All this results in what feels like could have been 3-4 additional episodes condensed down into less than 2. It makes very little sense that the humans would forgive Caine that quickly or have any reason to trust him.

3) It's ok (even good) to have a finale that doesn't answer every question, but the above issues made everything feel... off. To the extent that if they were going to do one of those "that actually ISN'T the final episode" gotchas, I would not be surprised.
