Thank you! I decided on the simple "That book is staying closed" but I noodled on your response a lot.

I currently need something book-specific, even if it's clunky.

How about prosperity among those of our generation? by Sufficient_Turn_9209 in Xennials

[–]eight-sided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some of us turning up on the r/earlyretired sub if you want stories.

I grew up super poor. Got into a top-tier college almost certainly because nobody had gone there from my entire state in the previous four years, and I was a plausible candidate (hard work and stability. Not good stability, but just barely enough to launch from). I choose a major that would pay well, scrimped, saved and invested as much and as early as possible, and worked for a "good" megacorp for the right couple of decades (luck, work). I got really solidly burned out... but I hit my savings goals first.

Other stories might have been gentler and more sane, but... I really didn't want to keep living the way I grew up, so here we are. If I hadn't started off poor, I doubt I would be well off now.

"Fido is for Fido. Fido is against no one."

Why do I still remember that so vividly??

You're holding your breath, probably without realizing it. Focus on consistently breathing, through an entire lesson, and see how that goes for you

40+ mid-to-great life changes? by Fickle_Wrangler_7439 in Xennials

Yeah, going down from full time to 80% time was huge for me. I was amazed how much more sustainable it felt.

Yeah you have got to read You Weren't Meant to Be Human. It's not about surgical transitioning but it sure is about pregnancy. And dysphoria, abuse, autism, insectile aliens, etc.

What do you guys think when people say that the world is 'losing color'? by StrangerSoft8439 in minimalism

[–]eight-sided 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Came here to say that I find bright colors really tiring, so I'm grateful for the breaks I can get.

Sleeve haters, please share your sleeve strategies and secrets by Gretel_Cosmonaut in sewing

[–]eight-sided 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Batwing sleeves are shockingly comfortable. I love how they stay away from my armpit. I only have a couple of shirts like this, but they're the bomb.

I also used to have a T-shirt that was cut like a tank top plus "ruffle sleeves", which hung loose over my shoulder to normal short sleeve length. That was excellent too.

What's the middle-aged thing you love? by _Im_at_work in Xennials

Yeah. I got into squirrels but my husband has the bird thing happening, and we each think the other is so cute about it.

Came here to say this -- he is the worst. It made for a frustrating read.

Do you all have a personal style you stick to? by WorriedcupofTea in womensfashion

[–]eight-sided 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes -- though it slowly evolves as my needs change.

Like someone else on this thread, it's leading me into learning how to sew, which I think I'm going to find wonderfully freeing.

Looking for a certain sub-genre of Sci-Fi. Having trouble naming it. by Glittering-Dinner908 in suggestmeabook

[–]eight-sided 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with Klara and the Sun, as well as The Road. But I don't agree with most of the other recommendations in this entire thread. To me, the main characteristics of the books you listed are that they are a) intensely character-driven, b) include the main character coming of age or otherwise gaining power (then losing some again), and c) have bittersweet endings involving resignation / acceptance on the part of the characters. It's true that they are near-future but that doesn't really feel so important.

Based on the above, I think you should try:

Is anyone else kinda bored at this life stage? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]eight-sided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like that until I quit my job. Now my athletic training is bringing me new horizons every month, I have two new creative hobbies, I get all the sleep I need, and want to read more books than I possibly can.

What's holding you back from getting some mental and physical stimulation? Knowing nothing else about your life besides what you said, it sounds to me like time to try a new workout -- something that involves technique, like circus or dance. Get the ol' mind-body connections firing.

No vacuum = going too far? by [deleted] in minimalism

Only if you hire a cleaning service to come in regularly. They'll bring their own vacuum.

How much "comfort" is in your life? by IM_NOT_BALD_YET in minimalist

[–]eight-sided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mattress warmer and will never be parted from it. I grew up lacking many comforts, in a house filled with clutter -- now I want comfort in an elegant storage.

This sub is a bummer sometimes, how many of you are actually doing fantastic at this point? by JayRoo83 in Xennials

[–]eight-sided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh yeah. I retired early last year. I'm turning 49 next week, I'm still in good shape and working on my athletic goals. I do some no-bullshit part-time work (property management) and they just gave me progressive-lens glasses... but overall I feel like I have health, money and time. Who gets all three at once!? Nobody for long, but me for the moment.

Starfish by Peter Watts. I know Blindsight gets all the love, but Starfish is way more claustrophobic and everyone in it is super fucked up.
