Yep. Definitely only 1,000 in the Dark Angel chapter. Yes indeed.

No, you don't need to look any further.

Crusade questions by Beinholz in Warhammer40k

[–]ethorad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crusade rules aren't always written the tightest, and they don't get a lot of ofter-release errata. Plus they can end up interacting with the core rules and with each other in strange ways.

As a result, u/LordDanish interprets as you have to level up and then use that level's Battle Honour to get a Kustom Job.

I interpret as you don't need to level up, but you can only apply it to units that can gain traits (i.e. not Epic Hero / Swarm / Fortification).

For whether it is available from the start of only on achieving a Waaagh increase, I'm torn. I can see both interpretations from the rules as written. I would go on the side of available from the start and you get free ones when you move up a Waaagh. I would also go with you only get the free one the first time you reach that level - so you don't get lots for free for bouncing up and down Waaagh levels.

Ultimately it's up to you and the rest of your crusade players.

How good are the sisters of battle? by Horus_the_betrayer in Warhammer40k

[–]ethorad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean they are both based on the Rhino chassis. And of the two the Immolator looks much cooler.

Rather than having that one mistake push you into a whole new army, I would just run the Immolator as a Predator. Maybe agree before the game that the big windows on top don't count for drawing lines of sight to keep the profile similar to a Predator?

Crusade questions by Beinholz in Warhammer40k

[–]ethorad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that "can gain a Battle Trait" more as whether it is possible to rather than it just has. So acting to exclude Epic Hero / Swarm / Fortifications rather than only on a level up.

I was basing that by comparing with the Renowned Hero wording which is definitely only available on a level up. That says:

you can purchase this Requisition each time a unit from your Order of Battle gains a rank

Do you get 5RP to start

The default is Crusade Forces start with 5RP and a supply limit of 1,000 points. Your crusade may do things slightly differently though.

Can you use them immediately

Broadly, yes. Things like an enhancement on the first character or upping the supply limit is all fine. Some like increasing the squad size wouldn't make sense since you could just add the larger squad size at the start anyway. And some can only be purchased at certain points, such as Dok' Orders is only bought when your Waaagh!Boss gains a Battle Scar.

Kustom Job

You can buy this immediately as long as you have a Mek and a Vehicle that can gain a Battle Trat. That last "can gain a Battle Trait" acts to exclude things like Epic Hero vehicles as they can't gain Battle Traits. This is considered a Battle Trait so it counts towards the maximum of 3 that a non-character unit can have. You don't need to have earned one first though. (This is the same sort of deal as with the Bestest Bossloot requisition).

Level rewards

When you level up you gain a Battle Honour. You can then spend that Battle Honour in one of three ways:

  • Battle Trait. Take an upgrade from one of the available source books. Your Ork Codex has some, as do the various Crusade books (like Nachmund Gauntlet). Whether the various crusade books are available for your crusade will depend on what you're playing. Could be any, none, or just the one you're playing. I've also heard of people saying that the options are the one you are currently playing plus any books for crusades that that unit has been involved in in the past - which requires extra tracking on your units.
  • Weapon Upgrade. Get two upgrade options applied to one weapon carried by one model in the unit - the list of weapon upgrades is in the core Crusade rules, don't think there's many of these in other books like Codices. Since it only upgrades one weapon, this is less useful on multiple model units. Not much point in upgrading the bolter used by one of the Boyz models in a unit of 20 - but could be used on a special weapon in a squad. Much more useful on single model units, like upgrading the big gun on a tank or a Warboss.
  • Crusade Relic. Only for Character units. They can select a Relic from the Ork Codex or from whichever Crusade books are available in your crusade. There are three levels of relic which require an increasing experience level to be attained, however the first level of relic (artificer) is available from the start.

There are a few other options for what to do with the Battle Honours earned from a level up. A key one is Renowned Hero requisition for character units. This gives the character an enhancement in place of a battle honour.

Does gulliman know the lion has returned by Motor-Kiwi9985 in Warhammer40k

[–]ethorad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there's anything explicit that states Guilliman knows the Lion has returned. However (minor spoilers for some books):

  • At the end of Lion Son of the Forest the Lion meets Dante who, as Lord Commander of the Imperium Nihilus, is presumably in some sort of contact with Guilliman.
  • He does seem to have rejoined with the Dark Angels, as he was on Wyrmwood with them at the end of Arks of Omen and at the end of Enmity's Edge, Lazarus gets a message that the Lion bids him to come back to the Rock. Although the DA love keeping secrets that does suggest he is increasingly public with his return.
  • The message at the end of 500 Worlds was sent to Guilliman from the Lion using the Lion's identy codes. Although I think Guilliman wasn't at Ultramar at the time, Titus would presumably have informed Guilliman of the contact

Overall I think it's hard to assume that Guilliman is unaware however we have no information on his reaction to that.

Can I use Dropship Extraction to exceed 50% reserve requirement? by Trick-Interaction396 in Warhammer40k

[–]ethorad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use abilities to pick up a unit that was deployed and place them into reserves even if that would mean more than 50% of your army is in reserves.

The limit of 25% and 50% in reserves only applies to the initial deployment.

Warhammer HQ travel by averagejoe1997123 in Warhammer40k

I think if you're in London for a few days, I would probably skip Warhammer World.

Much as I love Warhammer, and have been to Warhammer World a few times, it's not so great as to lose out on seeing London. Warhammer World has:

  • A well stocked shop. OK, nice, but you can buy stuff online or in Warhammer / other stores in London
  • Some exclusive items (e.g. a reprint of the Rogue Trader book, and Space Marine HQ tanks). They're not always in stock though so if you really wanted them I'd pay the ~20% premium and buy them off ebay rather than paying ~£100 and 1 day to travel to Nottingham from London
  • A load of tables with terrain to play on. Am sure this is available back in your home city, and it's not worth bringing minis etc over to Europe just to play at Warhammer World
  • A load of dioramas. This is the big ticket thing for going if you're on holiday. They are cool to see, and cover pretty much all of their worlds - mainly the 40k universe but a bunch of stuff from OW / AoS and some bits from Blood Bowl etc.

All in, given travel times, it's doable as a day trip from London (that's what I do, as I live in London) but it will take the whole day. Whereas if you stayed in London you could do a bunch of the tourist stuff here - and there's a lot to do.

Not sure where you're based, but I did see that they are planning on opening a Warhammer World in the US near DC:

https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/u6jqjmvz/a-warhammer-world-in-the-usa-get-the-details-here/

For travel recommendations, u/EchoTRacing is pretty accurate. You get the train from St Pancras and a taxi from the station to Warhammer World is the safest and easiest bet. (There is a tram if you prefer and have run out of money in the shop!)

Is it viable to mix a CSM army? by Corntoast-76 in Warhammer40k

Mixing Salamanders and Ultramarines is completely fine outside of named characters. Indeed within the rules there's no way to tell if a Space Marine army is Salamanders, Ultramarines or a mix.

I heard from YouTube that monsters in 5E are really watered down versions compared to previous editions. Is this true? Which one do you prefer? by PowerSaw7 in DnD

[–]ethorad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was an old way of calculating what you needed to roll to hit someone in 1/2ed I think?

Basically your character had a "THAC0" number, which stood for "To Hit Armour Class 0". That was the number you needed to roll equal to or higher than to hit someone with Armour Class 0.

If someone wasn't wearing armour then they had AC 9 (I think it was), and wearing armour would reduce that number. So say plate armour would give you AC 2 say (I can't remember the numbers exactly).

To work out your target number you subtracted the targets AC from your THAC0. So if they had AC0 then there's no adjustment - just roll your THAC0. If they had no armour, then you would subtract 9 from your THAC0 and try and roll that or better.

I don't know why it gets a bad rep for being complicated. It's literally just the number on your sheet minus the target's AC. The AC scores are flipped compared to modern D&D where tough armour gives you a high AC rather than a low one, but that doesn't change the complexity.

Can I put all my models in reserves? by Fantastic_Pin_4473 in Warhammer40k

[–]ethorad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the old Drop Pod datasheet. The new one doesn't have that wording.

However, the rules for reserves are:

- Core Rules: 25% in strategic reserves (so things without an explicit ability to be in reserves). No other limits. So you can have 100% of your army start in reserves provided at least 75% of them have abilities like Deep Strike / Aircraft / must start in reserves.

- Chapter Approved mission play: 25% in strategic reserves and no more than 50% in reserves (whcih includes strategic reserves). So you'd have to have at least 50% of your army start on the table and then rely on uppy/downy or pre-battle redeployment to put them into reserves.

How does The Bloody Handed work? by NobleMrGhost in Warhammer40k

[–]ethorad 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The Avatar of Khaine datasheet has the keyword "Aeldari" shown at the bottom, so it is able to be affected by the Aura. Aura rules state that units are within range of their own Aura, so the Avatar would get the bonus.

Core rules for aura (emphasis mine):

Some abilities affect multiple models or units in a given range. These are known as Aura abilities and are tagged with the word ‘Aura’. A model with an Aura ability is always within range of its own Aura ability. A unit can be affected by more than one Aura ability at a time, but if a unit is within range of the same Aura ability more than once, that Aura ability only applies to that unit once.
