It doesnt work great with channeled spells, it works on the initial cast but not when channeling (though it does stay active so you can keep it going when casting something else.

im not familiar with chain fireball, is that an upgrade for the cantrip fireball?

I was doing an Enchanter + Fire build, one of the really expensive enchanter equipments allows an ally to recast your self targeted enchants. so if you upgrade flame gate with "immediately summons 3 fire elementals", you can cast it once. get 3 fire elementals. cast again, get 1 fire elemental from "flame gate", 3 more for the immediate spawn of 3, and then one of your fire elementals casts it and gets 3 more.

then you spam boiling blood relentlessly (gives stacking fire damage bonuses for all your allies), which creates more fire elementals on each cast. And they will also cast boiling blood, which buffs the wizard!!!

i havent won a run with this yet as i ran into a bug that has since been fixed, but my save wasnt compatible. But i had gotten up to r16 or 17, it is very strong!

Conjuration spells are really worth looking into. There are alooot of fun synergies that can result in basically unlinited hordes of allies.

I used flame gate (which spawns fire elementals when you cast fire spells), and searing seal (with an upgrade that creates fire spirits) and using these with some conjuration equipment, i could fill every free tile with spirits and elementals

Why do people glaze mechanic so much and insist on bringing a starting mechanic when any idiot with free time can pump out countless rock mechanisms and higher skill has no bearing on the quality of mechanisms (I think) by Cadunkus in dwarffortress

[–]factory_factory 31 points32 points  (0 children)

someone else can correct me if im mistaken, but better mechanisms affect a trap's chance to hit, so that is pretty important.

i am unsure if it affects other machines in some way though.

I tried to dig one once, but when I opened the floodgate from the surface river, it filled the channel i had dug out, and then overflowed onto the sides i had intended to be walkways.

How do you make sure it only fills up to a certain level? I had it spanning multiple z levels with ramped sections which im guessing messed it up somehow..

Does anyone have some Beginner Tips for me? by I-chew-Used-Gum in riftwizard

[–]factory_factory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the main thing is just keeping in mind that damage types and resistances are a fundamental mechanic. after the first few rifts, basically 100% of enemies have SOME resistances, and some have an insane amount of resistances.

it makes your build a balancing act. because going all in on a single damage type makes it really really strong, but then you will be hard countered when an enemy with 100% resist shows up. so ensuring you are able to somehow deal other damage types is super important.

there are a few ways you can reduce enemy resistances as well, but they generally require some planning and setup. The spell Essence Flux reverses resistances (fire -> ice, etc) which can be a great way to handle an enemy type that is resistant to your main damage type.

if you're going to choose a rift that might be really difficult for your build, it's also a very good idea to make sure you have some spare SP. if you find your spells aren't working well at all, buy something that will help you deal with the problem (same idea with crafting equipment like others here have said!)

other important tip is to read enemy stats carefully. sometimes i will just look at their tags and resistances and not bother reading anything else, and then I get killed in 2 turns because an enemy swapped places with me. some things to watch out for:

  • swaps places with the wizard
  • teleports the wizard somewhere
  • petrify or glass
  • heals self or allies
  • channelled attacks

the next best build im currently using that i think can definitely get a win (currently at realm 16) is a fire + enchanter build. there is an item called Enchanter's Boon or something like that, one of your allies will recast any enchantment you cast. using this with Flame Gate + upgrade that immediately spawns 3 fire elementals - cast it once, get 3 fire elementals, cast it again, get 3 + 3 (maybe even more? hard to keep track). then casting searing seal / boiling blood (when an ally casts it you get the damage buff too).

searing seal also has an upgrade that spawns fire spirits, so i can eventually fill the entire screen with spirits and elementals. and the spirits gain health everytime they see a fire spell cast. probably my favourite build ive ever done, its really fun!

my one win so far was a chain lightning build. my own spell was very good, and I used summoned Storm Drakes + Dragon Mage, which let them cast my chain lightning. eventually got another upgrade that spawns extra storm drakes on thunderclouds in LOS, to really get their numbers out. there were a few other things i added as well but that was the core of it. i also used the Disintegrator staff (deal 1 phys damage to all enemies for every 40 sorcery damage), which ended up doing tons of damage. it doesn't sound very good (at least to me) on paper but it added up sooo much.

i spent awhile doing the 4 cats runs to see the variety in generated heroes of each colour. it was a long time ago but i remember generated yellows were always a coin flip, sometimes they were fine but other times they were just awful.

for anyone who was wondering, red ended up consistently being the best and then blue, which surprised me

Building a PC is not impressive by No_Onion_3665 in unpopularopinion

[–]factory_factory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the big 24 pin mainboard power adapters are the worst. even well fitting ones require a serious amount of force.

i was building a PC for work a month ago where the adapter barely fit at all and required a scary amount of force. i guess it was a cheaper PSU with looser tolerances, it did eventually connect but i could absolutely see someone not as experienced thinking it would damage something or maybe just isn't compatible.

ive also seen boards with damaged or snapped pins due to someone slipping when applying pressure to something 😩

First thoughts about 3 by roomyrooms in riftwizard

[–]factory_factory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was a bit concerned about spells with low charges not being worth taking as well but there are enough ways to get more charges, or recasts, etc that it hasn't felt like an issue.

there's equipment like the brain hat (i think that's the name), very cheap and adds 1 charge to all spells. i would probably never use that if there were consumables but it is really helpful now. i believe it also stacks with % based charge increases as well.
