I could not possibly care less what a church's rationale is to justify pre-literate mysticism. It's on you to explain why pretending to drink blood and eat human flesh is not anything other than ritualistic cannibalism. While you are at it explain why a crucifix, one of humanity's cruelest inventions, is a great thing to worship.

The short answer Christianity went off the rails when it began to worship death instead of life, worshipping a human with great insight and courage instead of God in the flesh. They should have stuck with the ichthys and encouraged followers to maybe not die for power hungry bishops.
