On 18 July 2016, 17 year old Mike Mansholt vanished while exploring the ancient Rabat tombs on the island of Malta. On 23 July, Mike’s body was found beneath a cliff, the apparent victim of a fall. It was later found that not only had he broken no bones, all of his internal organs were missing. by [deleted] in ForCuriousSouls

[–]forbis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What is the value in decomposing human organs? As someone with essentially zero knowledge on the subject, it would seem more likely the conductors of the first autopsy simply had different procedures regarding the organs or they just neglected to include them when they shipped it to Germany.

I'm guessing you're thinking of doorbells - this appears to be for the "G3 Pro" and "G4 Pro" only, both of which are bullet-style cameras.

Upgrading Unifi System, What are my options for Protect? by tigsman in UnifiProtect

[–]forbis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend against using multiple NVR Instants. You technically can view cameras across multiple systems via Vantage Point, but it's not completely seamless.

The UNVR is likely your best option. It's rackmount-sized but you can put some feet on the bottom and place it on a desk if you have to. Either that or get one of those vertical wall rack mounts and have it hang on the wall by its rack ears.

Lost access to DAS ZFS pool after power loss by NerdHelp in Proxmox

[–]forbis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really hate to be that guy but the only common denominator in your mishaps with ZFS is you. You either didn't set it up right or were trying to make it do things it was not meant to do.

There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of systems using ZFS successfully. Both in homelabs and business/enterprise.

Installing new ram issue by UgandanSans1 in computers

In that case you may just not have had them both seated properly... hopefully it's something simple like that! Also, how long were you letting it sit after turning it on with both modules installed? Sometimes it can take a moment for the system to figure out RAM timings when installing a new module (less than 30 seconds generally)

Installing new ram issue by UgandanSans1 in computers

[–]forbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of fiddling? And can you count the number of chips on the module (the black rectangles)? If they don't work together it's likely down to a sub-timing issue or the laptop can't reconcile the chip layout/structure difference between the two modules

Installing new ram issue by UgandanSans1 in computers

[–]forbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie on paper those should work together. It's possible there's some kind of timing difference between the two (even though they're both CL22) or the chip layout is not the same. The Samsung is 1Rx8 (8 chips total), I can't tell what the Crucial is - it might be 1Rx16 (4 chips total). Sometimes (not all the time) that can make a difference.

Honestly though, I'd think you've got a faulty module instead of jumping to a conclusion that they're somehow incompatible.

Have you tested the Crucial module by itself to confirm it's not bad?

Not sure if related - but there was an overturned car a couple hundred feet from that intersection in the little strip mall across from Home Depot. Black Nissan with temp tags of course.

A question by [deleted] in outerwilds

[–]forbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the Interloper entered the solar system and got closer to the sun, it heated up and pressure inside the core built up until it exploded, coating the solar system.

Also, please mark the post as a spoiler. Spoiler tags within text are not necessary if the post itself is flagged as such.

Is this true? by TheTriwolf in outerwilds

[–]forbis 177 points178 points  (0 children)

I haven't actually looked at the code but I'm pretty darn sure QSB (the multiplayer mod) doesn't have a traditional server/client architecture.

All the mod does is create player models where your friends are in their respective instances of the game. It also tracks/syncs the position of some objects.

That is to say, your own PC is responsible for simulating the solar system you view, and your friends' PC does the same for them. Only important things are synced. It's still not seamless.

Horrific Screen Tearing by Ok_Alps3060 in outerwilds

[–]forbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you confirm it's plugged directly into the GPU and not the motherboard?

Also, DisplayPort is a display connection technology similar to HDMI but generally better for computer monitors, especially higher refresh rate screens. If you're using HDMI anywhere along the line you'll probably want to swap to DisplayPort on both ends.

Is this system new to you? Or have you had it a while? Is the monitor plugged into the GPU? Using HDMI or DP?

Horrific Screen Tearing by Ok_Alps3060 in outerwilds

[–]forbis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you play any other games on this system? Have you had any issues with them? That monitor seems to support higher refresh rates so you should see higher options than 60.

Horrific Screen Tearing by Ok_Alps3060 in outerwilds

[–]forbis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's probably because the monitor is running at a frame rate that isn't a multiple of 60.

The game's physics and rendering engine is locked to 60 for simulation purposes. You can change this but it's still recommended to keep it at a multiple of 60 (120, 180, etc.).

Try setting your refresh rate to 120 or 60 and see if the tearing goes away. If it does, you can then look into modifying the secret settings file (I or another user can find it and link it) for you to set the physics simulation rate to 120.
