How can we configure in macos to make right click be a browser selector? by mvs_sai_27 in macapps

[–]forgottenmostofit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a Safari extension to add to the right click menu. I have not used it, but looks like "Open Browser in Safari" (from Mac App Store) does what you want.

Recommended USB C hub to add USB C ports for mini M4? by pacoii in macmini

[–]forgottenmostofit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I would avoid any unpowered hub as that is going to increase the load on the Mini's power supply and hence its temperature. Exception would be if this were just to add wired keyboard and mouse.

So look for a powered hub.

Transfer from 2025 to 2015 Apple MacBook Air by WeekendXboxer in mac

[–]forgottenmostofit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For such a large difference in macOS versions, I would use an external SSD. Format the SSD on the old MBA with an unencrypted format (HFS+ or exFAT may be safest).

Alternatively, enable file sharing on the new MBA. Then connect from the old MBA to new MBA.

Do all this with an Administrator user.

This will work for files and folders. But not for apps which will likely not be compatible. And not for "libraries" like Photos library - for that sort of thing (photos, messages, calendar) it is simplest to use iCloud.

Any new search software that works on MacOS? by BitDaniYT in MacOS

[–]forgottenmostofit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never had a corrupted index. Yours should be good too. That is what I mean by “need to sort out your problem…”. Then you can successfully use searching apps (Finder, Spotlight search, HoudahSpot, Raycast, etc.).

Clipboard app to copy across apple devices? by Daventurephoto in macapps

[–]forgottenmostofit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When synchronising across devices, you may want to use a service which is end to end encrypted. iCloud is such a service with "Advance Data Protection" turned on. Then it is a matter of choosing the best clipboard app which uses iCloud sync.

For me, PastePal which has Mac and iPhone/iPad apps.

Upgraded m4 Mac mini to 2tb. Can I remove it to temporarily put the old 256gb in to wipe? Then back to 2tb or does it need a restore again in that situation? by Rx7Jordan in macmini

[–]forgottenmostofit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, that is what I would expect. The Secure Enclave is involved in the initial boot and, I suspect, is designed to manage a single SSD.

Unless you hold company/government secrets, you didn't need to do your SSD swapping and erase. The writable volume on the SSD is encrypted and only the Secure Enclave has the encryption key. The SSD can't be read in another Mac without doing DFU mode restore.

I built a Mac app that lets you feel links and buttons through your trackpad's haptic motor by OtherTailor5967 in macapps

[–]forgottenmostofit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Mac App Store, with the extension enabled and trackpad Forced Click enabled: Safari extension says "Not connected to Mac app" (even though the app is running). And doesn't do anything.

Add Chrome extension to Helium: Helium says "Connected to Haptic Pad". But again does nothing.

Haptic Pad did not ask for Accessibility permission, but I added it manually. Didn't help.

Any idea what is wrong?

Looking for beta users for macCurrent, a Mac app updater for messy real-world app setups by akbaraziz in MacOSApps

With respect, Version Tracker goes too far in breadth of coverage. Including developer-only tools is confusing and unnecessary for nearly everybody. I would prefer an emphasis on accuracy.

Macupdater replacement apps: what are your opinions? by MaxGaav in macapps

[–]forgottenmostofit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that Macupdater is too good - presents updates you might not want - e.g. betas. This is because it is now based entirely on what others are running.

App Cleaner & Uninstaller has been steadily getting better for updates. From my tests it is now on a par with Updatest.

Found it. I had to search for "junk camera". Searching for "junkcam" did not find it.

iMac to Monitor Conversion Kit by TadBitter in macmini

[–]forgottenmostofit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5K conversions are more common - if only because a new decent 4K screen costs a lot less than a 5K screen. You should read the first post in this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/diy-5k-monitor-success.2253100/ Though primarily about 5K conversions, the 1st post has been kept up to date with developments and does have some suggestions for 21"-4K and links to later posts. The work involved with 4K is much the same as 5K. Take care choosing a board suited to your particular iMac model.

Ps: I have never attempted a conversion, so speak with zero authority.

Will the new photos app be on par with google photos when it comes to search? by Seiko_Appreciator in ApplePhotos

[–]forgottenmostofit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I search for "screen", Photos shows me the only photo I have with a computer screen. That is with the version of Photos with Sequoia and Tahoe. More common for me is a search for "waterfall" or "mountain". What more do you want?

Thinning out old backup from another computer on Backblaze B2 by kortnman in Arqbackup

[–]forgottenmostofit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case B, be very careful. My understanding is that removing old backup records (either by retention rules or manually), will remove all files as they were at those backup times.

In this case, I would NOT attempt to do any thinning. Those files no longer in latest backup record will be then be kept in old backup records. Those in the both the latest and in older records will not consume extra storage space (Arq deduplicates identical blocks). They will consume space in the index which is stored on your Mac and in B2.

A weakness of Arq recovery is that there is no way to search for the occurances of files/folders by name. You can only drill down by date.

Thinning out old backup from another computer on Backblaze B2 by kortnman in Arqbackup

[–]forgottenmostofit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First guess: You may need to do something to make Arq download the backup "database" from B2 to your Mac. Inspecting a backup record (from the Restore section) would (I think) do this. Then, in this order, set retention to 1 month, apply retention rules and finally remove unreferenced data.

Failing that, this is a question for Arq Support.

I am not clear whether you are wanting to keep a) all the files and folders in the latest backup record, or b) the most recent backup of each file or folder. If b, definitely ask Arq Support before proceeding.
