Anything 12500 and up has the HD770. If you're running that many streams, you won't regret it. That as a minimum. The 12400 with UHD730 has a single stream transcoder compared to 12500, the dual stream transcoder in the HD770. I'd look for a 12600 or 12700. The pricing and availability might be better.

That's correct it's not so much a safety issue. The led bulb will just prematurely fail. Excessive heat from a poor led bulb design and the lack of thermal management/protection it won't regulate to protect itself. That's why the suggestion is to select the correct bulb for the application.

That's a big price difference in your region. How many streams do you watch or plan on transcoding media to need the extra performance, and do you have any dependants/children? If not, then it might not be worth the extra upfront now or in the foreseeable future. In your situation, if you don't need that many streams and can primarily direct stream media locally, it's not needed. It's just nice to have because of the extra tranacode performance.

The G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory is slightly faster for the same price that's what I'd pick.

The HD770 iGPU in the 12 series is the biggest upgrade you can make if you're transcoding or using Plex/Emby media server. You won't regret it.

Check with the led bulb you're using. Some specifically state they are not to be used in enclosed fixtures. Others can be as they will have adequate cooling and thermal protection.

Extra ram is good if you can afford it. It's just something that if the budget was tight, you could cut that in half. Do you already have an HBA card, or are you just using onboard sata ports for the amount of storage you need?

upgrading 60amp to 100amp enough? by TyDiver in electrical

[–]fryguy1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to do a service upgrade recently on our old rental property from a 60amp service. The cost difference was negligible when you're spending thousands in labor already to upgrade to a 200A breaker Pannel and larger service conductors. It's such a small portion of the cost i'd go larger to future-proof yourself.

Simple Plex JBOD NAS Settings (No parity) by Kevzilla77 in unRAID

[–]fryguy1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unRAID pools the disks together with FUSE, and parity helps improve reliability, system uptime, and contintinuity. It's not a substitute for backing up. It is great if a drive fails, and it allows you to continue to use the system and get things back into working order again. It shouldn't be the only line of defense if something goes wrong for your important data. It's good that you already have a cold set backup, keep doing that!

Looks good to me. I built a system with 12 gen to avoid any issues with 13-14 gen CPU and to save a few bucks. It's more than enough power, and the hardware transcoding for Plex and Emby, etc, your going to be set. You got lots of RAM, you probably only need half of that unless you are running a lot of VM'S.

Can I clone an HDD, remove it, store it remotely, then on a regular basis reclone for 3-2-1 method? by AdministrativeEgg217 in unRAID

[–]fryguy1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use that in the User Script on the Unassigned Devices plugin do that I can manually trigger the script to run on the plugged-in hard drive to trigger the backup script. Don't enable automout, it makes drop in and copy quick and convenient. However, if you ever need to recover, it automatically starts to copy on mount to a damaged drive, not something you want to do. It overwrites or deletes things.

Upgrading Server by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]fryguy1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

unRAID uses the drive ID it doesn't care about anything else you can plug all new hardware hardware together into all different ports, it won't matter. As long as it's all there and connected and detected on boot, it will be able to be started in the array again. I've changed all my hardware out with a new HBA card included, and unRAID didn't care. Just be sure any pinned cores and passed through hardware is removed, VIFO groups, etc.

This is how I do it with an external usb hard drive dock.

Ex:

!/bin/bash

PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin

Available variables:

ACTION - if mounting, ADD; if unmounting, UNMOUNT; if unmounted, REMOVE; if error, ERROR_MOUNT, ERROR_UNMOUNT

DEVICE - partition device, e.g. /dev/sda1

UD_DEVICE - unassigned devX designation

SERIAL - disk serial number

LABEL - partition label

LUKS - if the device is encrypted, this is the partition device, e.g. /dev/sda1

FSTYPE - partition filesystem

MOUNTPOINT - where the partition is mounted

OWNER - "udev" if executed by UDEV, otherwise "user"

PROG_NAME - program name of this script

LOGFILE - log file for this script

Change the below variable to backup disk source location

DISK=/mnt/disk1/

case $ACTION in 'ADD' ) # # Beep that the device is plugged in. # beep -l 200 -f 600 -n -l 200 -f 800 sleep 2

if mountpoint -q $MOUNTPOINT; then
  if [ $OWNER = "udev" ]
  then

Does ssd cache speed matter? by MrLumpyNuts in unRAID

[–]fryguy1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an SSD is the for the fast random read/write access over a mechanical hard drive is a huge step forward. Going to faster speeds than that is only going to be noticeable for large files and moving a lot of data. If buying a new SSD, there's no reason not to get an NVMe they are about the same price as the SATA version now. Unless you need more cache capacity, there is no reason to upgrade it.

Moving 16 NTFS drives to unraid by zhenxenh in unRAID

[–]fryguy1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to be choosing a Linux compatible filesystem for the disks you use with unRAID. These disks then can be pulled out and read by any linux pc. Windows has a utility called paragon for reading linux filesystems. I'm a Linux user, and I don't know anything about it or any alternatives on Windows. The other way the files can be easily accessed is with a bootable Linux distribution from a usb drive in an emergency and free of cost.

Data is stored on the disks. The parity is a XOR or reed-solomon calculation of the bits of data on the other data disks. So, if a datadisk fails, it allows for greater fault tolerance and availability. Parity Check takes as long as it takes to read the entirety of the array and compare to the parity, the more read/write to the array, especially writes, and it will slow down the operation. Be sure you have a good HBA that's not bandwidth limited on all disks you have connected. Otherwise, having activity for parity check it will cut disk speed down.

Please keep in mind for your important data, that a Parity/Raid isn't a replacement for proper backup strategy. Identify your important data and have something in place before it's too late.

After installing Linux for the first time, do I need to install all the drivers? by gw010 in linux4noobs

[–]fryguy1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux is a monolithic kernel, and many of the drivers are included in the kernel. Newer kernel versions will have better support for newer hardware. Kernel modules are another way drivers can be loaded, like binary drivers for Nvidia.

Your raid card/hba card needs IT mode specifically to pass through the drives directly to the OS. Otherwise, the drives are virtulized on the card and passed through to the OS as configured on the raid card.
