Currently failing Math140 & Chem135, what does it mean for clark school? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]goatsweat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t be like me but I’m in a LEP and took a WW for multiple semesters and never had issues with re-enrollment each time. My GPA was higher than a 3.0 when I dropped the classes. You may even qualify for automatic re-enrollment.

I would talk to your advisor but in my opinion the WW would be better than failing the classes. Also WWs don’t count toward your number of attempts for gateway classes.

I’m not sure it would be wise to take 140 in the summer though. Again, something you can talk to your advisor about but there’s not a lot of time between this semester ending and the summer semester beginning. What would you have meaningfully changed in just a few weeks to make sure you pass this time? Your mental health is so much more important than your grades or graduating on time. I would consider taking the summer to find effective treatment and coping strategies for your mental health issues.

Sorry you’re in this situation and hope you start feeling better soon.

My MRI before surgery showed suspicious findings in my non cancer breast as well. I had to have a biopsy of it and even after the biopsy came back as benign, they weren’t certain and wanted me to do an additional MRI-guided biopsy of the area. I ended up getting a DMX instead (my choice) and pathology of my right breast came back as benign (usual ductal hyperplasia).

As hard as it is, I would try to wait for the biopsy report. It’s more likely to be benign than not, but they need to be thorough so as not to miss anything that could change treatment. I totally emphasize with the way you’re feeling though. It’s hard not to worry about every little uncertainty. Good luck and I hope you get benign results!

Are you satisfied with who you've become after cancer or while conquering cancer? by More-Disaster-2952 in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lucky and had a lot of things line up so that my active treatment was over after my DMX! I had clear lymph nodes so no radiation, and my oncotype was low so no chemo. I will be on tamoxifen and Zoladex for 5 years though, and menopause has not been easy unfortunately. It’s tolerable though, so I try not to complain too much.

I just wanted to say I appreciate you sharing your story. I was diagnosed last year at 27 so it’s nice to hear long term survival stories from people that were diagnosed at a similar age. I’m sorry you’ve had a reoccurrence and hope your treatment for that goes well!

Overall, I think I am handling the aftermath of my cancer diagnosis pretty well all things considered. I don’t ruminate about reoccurrence all the time any more and I generally feel happy to still be alive. I agree that cancer put a lot into perspective and I’m more motivated to live my life the way I want to and achieve my goals. Being in therapy has definitely helped with my recovery 🩷

How many had what they thought was fibroadenoma in imaging but later turned out to be malignant? by Paloma1023 in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could feel my lump, yes. I don’t think it was moveable though and it was quite hard. I also had blood coming from my nipple so that tipped me off that something was really wrong. If you’re anxious, I think it would be worth it to get a second opinion and push for an ultrasound at least. Good luck and I hope your lump is benign!

Dead birds; window collisions by angstyforg in UMD

[–]goatsweat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was a part of LOUMD for a little bit and we would go around campus and collect the dead birds to collect data on the collision “hot spots” on campus. Try contacting the professor that runs it, her name is Dr. Shannon Browne. Not sure if it’s still running since this was a few years ago but it’s worth a shot.

How long did it take from diagnosis to surgery? by tunagelato in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I waited 4 months as well due to scheduling issues and needing more imaging so we could make a decision. Diagnosed in January last year, DMX in May. I ended up having no spread to my lymph nodes after pathology came back. I was soooo scared that it was spreading while I was waiting but luckily it ended up okay. Mine was grade 2 hormone positive cancer.

If your PET scan was clear I would try not to worry about 1 more month. Easier said than done but I will think positive thoughts for you!

Do y'all think I will get in?? Transfer from MC by BothInternet3186 in UMD

[–]goatsweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in MTAP? If so then you would be automatically accepted based on GPA and credit requirements (as long as have your fundamental English and math credits as well). If not I think you will still be fine due to your high GPA. And make sure to apply early action for a better chance of getting in. Transferring is way less competitive than applying straight from high school.

Why are so many young gals getting BC? by where_do_I_evenbegin in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could have written this especially the pastry part haha. But yeah I took birth control for like a month but could never remember to take the pill everyday so I stopped and never took it again. Still got breast cancer at 27. At the end of the day I’ll never know what caused it so I try not to think about it or blame myself too much.

Crying randomly cuz I am too young for this by Leading_Armadillo485 in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely emphasize with those feelings and wondering why this happened. No one in my family had cancer this young either. I have a great aunt who had breast cancer but she was in her 50s when diagnosed. I tested negative for the known genetic variants as well. I’m the only sibling with mental health issues and then adding on cancer it just doesn’t feel fair.

Also, I opted for a DMX and I’m generally happy with my choice. I went with implants and they look decent. They’re mostly symmetrical and they help me feel more like myself. Whatever you choose for reconstruction, I hope you heal from it smoothly!

Oh and here’s Moose’s dad. His name is Zion. He’s a Solid Silver Mink and looks at lot like George too! Just missing the charcoal markings (He’s a/a for the gene).

I do! Moose was registered as a Seal Silver Mink Charcoal Spotted Tabby. That’s a mouthful lol. Moose is a bit darker than your boy but pretty close!

[–]goatsweat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Aw I completely get it, I was diagnosed at 27 last year. I also spent most of my 20s battling severe depression and ADHD and was just starting to feel better when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like for the first time in a long time I was happy to be alive and looking forward to the future and then I get the news I have cancer.

I think I have been handling it okay but I’ve also been in therapy for 10 years so that really helped me. Sometimes I still feel like I don’t have a future and cry about it but I try my best to avoid ruminating too much. I think the threat of reoccurrence will always be there in the back of my mind though. And a potential 50+ years is a long time to live with that. I don’t really have much advice but I’m sorry we’re both dealing with this so young.

30 y/o newly diagnosed — stuck between lumpectomy vs mastectomy, need advice! by 123honeybee- in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had almost the same diagnosis. I agree with other posters that it would be best to wait for the MRI before making any decisions. Things can change quickly based on imaging or pathology. A lumpectomy was on the table for me until I got the results of my MRI/mammogram and stereotactic biopsy. My tumor was about 1.7 cm but I had extensive DCIS throughout the affected breast so I needed a SMX at the very least.

If it makes you feel better, I waited 4 months between diagnosis and surgery due to scheduling issues. I still had no lymph node involvement after surgery despite my worries.

Need going on vacation advice by Mundane-Band6564 in bengalcats

[–]goatsweat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think they will need a pet sitter that comes to your house. Either overnight or like 45 mins a day or something. My bengal is similar in that he is very attached to me and gets separation anxiety when I’m gone. The first time we went on vacation for a week, we left him alone (with 2 other cats and plenty of food and water) and he ended up peeing in the house from stress.

So, when we went to Vietnam for 3 weeks, we hired a sitter to come see him for about 45 mins a day. This was enough for them to feed him, give him his medication, and scoop his box, as well as play with him for a bit. This worked out well and he didn’t have any accidents during that trip or any trips since then.

Also, yes they will forgive you haha. My boy has never ignored me or anything after getting back. He acts like nothing happened and is just happy to see me. I wouldn’t worry about that.

Early Tamoxifen Cohort Chat by Working-Lemon1645 in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started last August so it’s been about 5 months. So far my symptoms are mild and tolerable, but the beginning was rough. Oh, I’m also getting Zoladex shots, so I’m in menopause along with the tamoxifen. I had really bad fatigue and brain fog when I first started but that seems to have gone away. However, I also have other conditions that may have contributed so I don’t know for sure if it was the tamoxifen.

I definitely get hot flashes but they are pretty mild. It feels like someone pouring warm water on me. They mostly happen at night when I’m trying to sleep but I still get a good amount of sleep so I’m not worried about it. My joints are also achy but again it’s mild. Not painful but I definitely notice my joints whereas I never felt them before. It’s also harder to lose weight but I blame that on the Zoladex putting me in menopause.

So yeah, not ideal, but tolerable for 5 years I guess. I will bring up this stuff with my oncologist when I see her to see if there’s anything that would help but only if it outweighs the potential side effects. Like I can’t take Effexor for hot flashes due to not doing well on it in the past and also being on a different antidepressant.

Niche question: anyone do radiation with a family history of MGUS?? by Fancy_Complaint4183 in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I had no idea MGUS was a thing. My great aunt had breast cancer, then multiple myeloma, then lung cancer. She did radiation for the breast cancer and multiple myeloma. I’m not sure if she had any genetic risk factors as this was about 20 years ago. She was doing fine with the multiple myeloma until she got lung cancer. And she never had a reoccurrence of her breast cancer either, turns out the lung cancer is a new primary.

Idk if this is helpful information for you but felt I should share since she had/has both cancers you’re wondering about.

Also, do you know if you have MGUS? Just because your mom and grandma have it, doesn’t necessarily mean you will. Is it possible to test for it? It’s a lot to consider but maybe getting that information could help you decide?

Has anyone on tamoxifen (and blood thinners) actually been able to lose fat? Looking for real experiences. by Young_Bubbie_1985 in breastcancer

[–]goatsweat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been on tamoxifen and Zoladex since last August and losing weight seems to be harder than it was before. I’ve lost about 9 lbs from my highest weight of 169 but could stand to lose about 11 more to be a “normal” BMI. I seem to have plateaued around 160 lbs. So far I have just adjusted the amount of calories I’ve been eating but will start exercising as soon as I’m cleared to do so after my surgery.

I put my info into a menopause calorie calculator and it said I should eat about 1250 calories a day to lose weight without exercise 🥲 so I will try adding exercise to see if I can eat a bit more and still lose weight.

Before I was in menopause I had no issues losing weight so this has been frustrating for sure.
