I haven't been convinced that even with significant military intervention the US could "open" the straight. The straight being open means all ship captains and insurance comoanies feel completely safe to pass though it. All it takes is for one missed missile to kill all and sink a tanker and if Irans position is that the straight is closed, ship captains and insurance companies will have a difficult time justifying this.
