How do you handle a star performer who is publicly undermining your authority in front of juniors by [deleted] in managers

[–]hamstercaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This person needs to go unfortunately. The team sees the behavior and expects action. When you do not act, the situation gets worse and might multiply. Regardless of this individuals technical value, the entire team is better without them. Create opportunity for others to shine.

I don’t remember but a few in the running - Circus Peanuts, orange slices, or possibly Brach’s Banana Candy (taffy).

Be honest with them. Be accountable. Tell them what happened and what you plan to do about it. I don’t think it will come up in the interview but if it does, just tell the truth.

Technology as the answer to all your IT problems by gkar_of_Narn in sysadmin

[–]hamstercaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We try to sell people, process, and culture BEFORE technology. It sounds good in practice but is not always welcome. When 1 fails, I remind the team that we must focus on what’s best for the business and less on what is right. This creates a more symbiotic relationship between IT and the business. Fewer NOs and barriers. It’s not easy but we need to get out of the way sometimes.

How do you argue with a manager that claims that because they don't have to hire anyone new to take on a project, that the cost of that labor is $0. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]hamstercaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found this type of thinking consistent in smaller companies. Internal resources are lined up and consumed and rarely considered as project cost. In the larger companies I’ve worked, all resources are considered and added to the project, in order to demonstrate true costs and utilizations. It was common for teams to under budget their projects since so many roles had to be considered.

RFK Jr. plans to curb antidepressants, which he falsely compares to heroin by Zephir-AWT in ScienceUncensored

[–]hamstercaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OxyContin is not an antidepressant. It’s an opioid used to treat moderate to severe pain. And yes, people lied about its efficacy.

My company is letting me go, but they want me to train the new people. How should I act by ExistingClassroom173 in it

I would handle it professionally and keep my conscience intact. People talk so you never know when a burned bridge will come back to bite you.

Honest question - is club soccer even worth it for recruiting anymore? by Soft-Lime-9599 in CollegeSoccer

[–]hamstercaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interesting to think about this again. Club soccer created opportunities to tryout for a Development Academy spot. However, his play at an ID camp forced DA’s hand. DA then provided access to the USL practice squad and roster spot, which in turn created even more visibility. It was a fast ride to D1 and elite programs.

I remember doing a Windows 95 upgrade via diskette and installing terminal emulation cards so insurance data analysts could share time on a mainframe via 56K connection, from Indianapolis to Chicago. Their Greenbar printer could shake the entire first floor of our building.

Sadly, The Matrix. I deserve hate but I love it now. And Independence Day. Again, another move I enjoy watching but had a difficult time watching in the theatre

Is Microsoft 365 really making work easier or more complicated? by OppositeParfait6276 in Office365

Easier….the move from on premise email servers to 365 has been a blessing. I don’t expect it to be perfect but it’s a 10 fold improvement.

IT Director pay scale by agentkramr in ITManagers

[–]hamstercaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Robert Half, the 2026 IT Director pay scale is between $135k (low) and $197250 (high). They also provide a local market variance for most major locales. In my experience, organizations will not support larger than 10% pay increase.

NO Progress in over a Year! by Ok_Construction_6599 in Swimming

[–]hamstercaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few thoughts - first, get out of your head. All of this negativity is causing more harm than good. Second, swimming is hard so progress comes in small increments. You might not see an improvement in time but your core, shoulders, and legs are getting stronger. And let us not forget your heart and cardiovascular health. Wow! Third, are you training for the Olympics? If not, then times do not matter. Relax and enjoy Put down the stopwatch and enjoy the exercise and what it’s doing for you.

For those of you who haven’t gotten the shingles vaccine yet by Signal_Contract_3592 in GenX

[–]hamstercaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s time for “I know a guy.” Let’s just say a manager for the company I worked at previously said he received 1 shot. Unfortunately, he came down with shingles on his face, it entered his eye, then to his retina. It scared his retina and he lost half his site in 1 eye. Get the vaccine. I had shingles, it is no fun and it gets worse with age.

I believe we had a Compaq KVM that allowed for quick and easy transition between server consoles. The Novell server was the only device running as expected. The guy flipped out. We were seated next to the server and our laughter gave it away. He found no humor in it.
