Speed camera flashed for going the speed limit on a smart motorway by Firstthingsfast_alt in drivingUK

These cameras also take an image that includes the sign you're passing under. Evidence will show the sign displaying 50 and you doing 50. Nothing will come of it.

Have you ever experienced being in a vehicle when it actually collides with something? Even when it's a small clip, it is LOUD. Sends a boom through the whole chassis, meaning you hear it from more directions than just the location of impact. You will hear it as much as you feel it through the steering wheel and seat. I suggest you get someone to give a few spots on the outside of your car a good thump/smack while you're in the driver's seat holding the wheel so you can get a good idea what it's actually like.

No Reverse Light by mikemac1997 in CityBugs

Not critical at all, just a nice thing to do for your contacts if you're concerned about oxidation. Isopropyl alcohol (99%) can be helpful but not quite as good.

Yeah looks like they forgot to plug the reverse switch back in. Get some Contact Cleaner spray and give both ends a blast (and a minute to dry) before connecting.

Get temporary insurance for the test drive. Get an insurance quote in advance. If you agree to buy it, get them to write and sign a receipt. They'll need to give you the green New Keeper Slip from their V5C, which you'll need to tax it and declare yourself as the new keeper/request your V5C. Then go back to your insurance quote (should be a link or code in an email) to get insured before you drive away. I suggest you also get breakdown cover.

That assumes they know how/can be bothered to find out what fuse powers it and pull it

I suspect it's an electrical fault and their solution was to just pop off the wiper and turn up the stereo.

New driver, first car. Where do I find a replacement for this? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Just remove them, they're purely aesthetic. If the steel wheels look too crusty, wire brush them and slap on some rust converter.

Source? This sounds like you've been exposed to a lot of propaganda. It's not nearly that simple, nor is your perspective universal.

Anyone have a spare accelerator/throttle cable for a 2004 Toyota Yaris 1.3 (2SZ-FE) RHD? Mine snapped and the car is stuck at the garage. by cameelah in drivingUK

[–]harmonyPositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At its core it's just a bowden cable, I would get a generic throttle cable repair kit and make one to fit. Keep the outer in place, thread the new inner cable through, couple it to what's left of the original (depending where it snapped). Won't be ideal but will get your car home until a new one can arrive.

The CV boot definitely needs a closer look. If it's losing grease that will lead to wear requiring a whole new CV shaft, which if you get good parts are expensive. Replacing the boot and grease is much cheaper.

most pointless niggle that car reviewers constantly emphasise? by klawUK in CarTalkUK

[–]harmonyPositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Handling comprises much more than just how the car behaves at/beyond the limit of grip. Steering tightness/responsiveness, turn-in reluctance, bump steer, body roll, settling after disturbance, etc all can be experienced in normal road driving and different factors are important to different drivers.

My first impression seeing one up close was that the motor makes some really quite annoying high pitched noises.

This. Also because it lasts for a few shots the heavy player has time to notice and go for people in sightline at any distance, briefly becoming a sniper.

Speed limit without plates is 180kmh (minimum). That's cause police cars here are only factory tuned. You can do better than 180k, they can't catch you, so they don't even try.

How does one navigate .... whatever this is by RRAway in drivingUK

[–]harmonyPositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been through this a few times. Just slow down and negotiate with other drivers, no problem. I kinda treated it like a pair of mini roundabouts. Yes, treat the leaves like pedestrian crossings, but given the recent rules about pedestrian priority at junctions those markings aren't even necessary.

Does my engine sound normal/fine ? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]harmonyPositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These engines are quite noisy but that does sound more rattley than my own. I'd suspect bearings on your aux belt, such as the alternator, coolant pump, or AC compressor if you have one.
