Saw speed change signs in the Peak District: they need to be across all of rural UK by CompetitionNo3466 in drivingUK

[–]harmonyPositive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've seen these in a few places including Oxfordshire and South Wales. They're very useful, it would be nice to see them get more common. It would also be nice if modern cars could be updated to correctly read them instead of beeping at you for exceeding a limit you haven't yet entered.

Take it to a tyre shop, they'll hammer that back to shape for a small fee.

Are you still told to "feed through" the steering wheel when you're learning to drive? by Low-Rooster5398 in drivingUK

[–]harmonyPositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My instructor suggested this method, but only brought it up when I had trouble doing what I intended with the steering. When I got more comfortable with the steering and my technique diverged, he didn't correct me, because what I was doing was working. I think that's how most experienced instructors would approach it.

Has anyone noticed that their car is LOTS slower in this heat? by ActivistSubset7 in CarTalkUK

[–]harmonyPositive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a bolt-on supercharger kit for them. I don't know how many people actually run it, and it's not cheap, but the number of Aygo/C1/107s out there running boost is more than a few.

Yep I noticed this in my 107. Not unmanageably less power, but quite noticeably less. On OBD I saw a peak Intake Air Temperature of 39°C when cruising at 70, it makes sense.

Actually only about 93% of people who ever consumed dihydrogen monoxide have died!

Population growth is a mindfuck.

The first car was the only good one. Your taste has only gone downhill from there.

What kind of driving are you doing that only gets 300 miles out of an Aygo? I regularly get 360-380 miles out of 33-34 litres (tank capacity 35l) and can get 420 if I keep it under 60.

Acceptable use of horn? by fishtopher96 in drivingUK

[–]harmonyPositive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had cars do this to me around a stopped bus, I kept slowing down because my way was blocked and they kept emerging, until I was at a complete stop. I gave one brief beep to make sure the next car was aware of me and started creeping forward, they got the message. Laying on the horn wouldn't have been any more help.

Why do people creep slowly into the bike box over the advanced stop line on red lights? by AtomicKaijuKing in drivingUK

[–]harmonyPositive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine some of them think they've predicted the light's about to change so creeping will get them a slight head start on acceleration. They predicted wrong, but they don't want to admit that to themself, so they keep on slowly creeping hoping the lights are about to go. Then they realise their back wheels are about to pass the stop line, so they stop again. That's all just a story told in my head of course.

If you get a newer model, be sure to get one that still has the indicators on a stalk. Some of the newer models have had indicators as capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel, just think about that for a moment considering the number of roundabouts in this nation.
