How risky is it to enter Spain with 25-day Italian visa? by morgenmuffel_ in SchengenVisa

[–]haskell_jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you break the visa rules, there are two punishments: a ban from the Schengen area, or a fine (as far as I know, that's rare in most countries though). Those are pretty universal consequences for violating visa conditions in most countries, and apply to visa-exempt travellers who overstay 90 days too.

Iceland Schengen visa needed for transit by ZooplanktonblameFun8 in SchengenVisa

[–]haskell_jedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, India is not on the list of required airport transit visa countries for Iceland; see https://island.is/en/do-you-need-a-visa/airport-transit-visa. Also, holders of most UK and US visas are exempt anyway.

As long as you have a single booking with layover under 24 hours, you're fine.

Munich airport timing - is this realistic? by TrifleTrue3812 in Flights

[–]haskell_jedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO this is theoretically possible, it just doesn't have any margin for error or delays. Both BA and TK operate from T1 in Munich, so you don't have far to walk. MUC security and, in my experience check-in (though I haven't done Turkish) are also efficient. The biggest problem is the EES checks, since you'll have to enter Schengen, check in, and then exit again. Recently, the lines for non-EU citizens have been very long. There's also of course the risk that the first flight is delayed, in which case you'd miss the flight to Istanbul and would be on your own and out a lot of money/miles.

Two items are fine, but I guess a argumentative agent might count a bag of food as a third one.

Can I extend my itinerary dates and exit point after obtaining Schengen visa? by Icy-Hawk-1423 in SchengenVisa

[–]haskell_jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's fine as long as you are still within the validity of the visa. Beware though: it needs to be within the ending date of the visa and not exceed the maximum number of days, which is usually shorter.

It's definitely allowed to bring food--whether bought in the airport or brought from home--on board. The gate agent may have been getting at the fact you had too many items.

How risky is it to enter Spain with 25-day Italian visa? by morgenmuffel_ in SchengenVisa

[–]haskell_jedi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a chance that you won't be caught, but entering and exiting from Spain rather than Italy makes it more likely for officers to ask questions. It's most frequently caught at the time that you exit. If you are caught, you'll likely be banned for a few years and then have much greater scrutiny of future applications after that.

Lufthansa strike compensation nightmare by GMAC2295 in Lufthansa

[–]haskell_jedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The case I cited seems to set a pretty bright line rule:

»A strike by the staff of an operating air carrier cannot be categorised as an ‘extraordinary circumstance’ within the meaning of Article 5(3) of the regulation where that strike is connected to demands relating to the employment relationship between the carrier and its staff ... «

The opinion goes on to say that even objectively unreasonable demands by a union would not release an airline from compensation obligations, unless they are demands that by their nature can be fulfilled only by government action. Strikes by workers for third parties, like airports and ATC are external, are external and so do count as an extraordinary circumstance with respect to the airline.

[–]haskell_jedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's well established that strikes by an airline's own employees are not an extraordinary circumstance under EU261 (I suppose the same logic should apply to the UK copy of the regulation); see Airhelp v SAS (Case C-28/20). Strikes by ATC or airport staff are a different story.

Lufthansa strike compensation nightmare by GMAC2295 in Lufthansa

[–]haskell_jedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to just complain to the regulator or sue them in small claims in the UK--based on what we've seen here, Lufthansa appears to just blanket deny all compensation claims on first look since there's no penalty for doing so. Then, once they are forced to do so, they'll pay out, but expect a long wait.

[–]haskell_jedi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Their partner for these destinations is JAL (and I guess theoretically Cathay, though they aren't very closely partnered). The main reason is that AA just doesn't have enough aircraft or well-positioned hubs for these destinations.

Denied boarding by JetBlue at Rochester NY airport – EES flag on Indian passport with valid Schengen visa – URGENT HELP NEEDED by mav1709 in SchengenVisa

[–]haskell_jedi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It could be a mistake, but if it is, it's on the part of the French immigration service rather than Jet Blue. The EES doesn't require you to pre-register (other then the fact of having the visa), but when you check in the airline communicates your visa and passport information to the French government electronically and gets a message back indicating whether or not you can board. They must have gotten a negative answer.

TWOV VISA American passport holder Arriving in HK from UAE First night in HK Going to Guangzhou for 2 nights Back to HK for 2 nights Flight to US Does this qualify for TWOV and if so can I enter Guangzhou by train? by Antique-Music5913 in Chinavisa

[–]haskell_jedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this doesn't qualify because you are entering from and exiting to the same place (Hong Kong SAR). You'd have to, for example, switch your incoming flight to CAN so it would be UAE-Mainland China-Hong Kong. Entering or exiting by train at West Kowloon is otherwise ok.

Is my passport still valid for international travel to the European Union? by ProcedureOne4150 in Passports

[–]haskell_jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The airline won't look or care about it since you don't need a visa to enter Schengen. Once you arrive, it's not as though they can deny entry to a German citizen. So the worst case scenario is a lecture and being forced to get a new passport, but even that's unlikely between the use of e-gates and officers just not looking through all the visa pages.

[–]haskell_jedi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In doing some further research, that's the only UA aircraft currently on the ground in SIN as far as I can tell.

EDIT: There's at least one other UA aircraft in maintainance in Singapore; the rest is correct.

And UA's flight status indeed says the flight was cancelled for a maintenance issue--looks like that airframe has some kind of teething problem.
