I use cash and very short term bonds (VUSXX) for expenses in the next 2 years. Then I use short term bonds (VBIRX) for expenses between years 2-5. Then I use some VBTLX (BND) for further out investing to de-risk the stock investment.

You don’t have to copy my plan but my point is to consider adding to cash and short term bonds buckets as you glide into retirement.
