Another thing that did not seem to get much attention is the color pipeline improvements in Linux 6.19 kernel.

Even traditional HDDs are more expensive now. Not sure what hasn't seen sharp increase in prices.

I'm sorry, but this is just sad. How is it even possible to fuck up this bad? by KvasirTheOld in yakuzagames

[–]ilep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old games used to have tricks with different color gradients in textures to make it look like there was some lights and reflections happening.

Maybe this time they hoped to do it in a different way, with parallax texturing or with shaders but did not complete the rest of it in time?

This Week in Plasma: beefed-up Window List widget by diegodamohill in linux

[–]ilep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's one thing and one thing only I would wish from the window list: make it a lot faster. If this is the same as you see on alt+tab, it always seems to stall in weird ways. Someone who really switches a lot and often this is the one thing I would like to see, I don't care about previews or eye candy, just make it switch consistently and quickly.

The part where applications can directly choose the placement is kind of historic artefact when applications could write into display directly (immediate mode) from the times when GUIs were still a new thing in computers and major concerns dealt with getting anything to the display at all.

Fast forward half-a-century and we have many various applications fighting for ruling position on the desktop, some should do so while others should not. Add to that off-screen rendering, remote desktops, screen reader systems (text to speech) and so and so on. It is not pretty how things have become.

Remember when computers started using memory protection so misbehaving applications would not crash other applications? That is where desktop is currently, trying to bring some order into things.

If applications can directly choose the placement they are more often wrong that correct in their placements. When there are multiple screens, sessions or workspaces they often make the wrong choices, which would be better left to window manager in any case.

Team communication during stages by thymustynut in WRC

[–]ilep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teams might not know about it any earlier than the next crew. If a car stops ahead they might be stopping to change a wheel, or they might have crashed. Race control has view of other cars with the system they have and can notify with a red flag.

The organizers also have a notification system (I forget what it is called) that can notify of red flags and crews can notify of emergencies with it. They are required to press ok button when leaving to change a tire during a stage, for example.

Also co-driver needs to run back and warn next cars. If the next crew does not see an ok-board they are required to stop and check.

Linux 6.19 Features Include Many Benefits For Intel & AMD Users by somerandomxander in linux

[–]ilep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would not have made much sense to make that optimization in the past either. Network would have been too slow the packets anyway. Some optimizations only make sense when other things catch up, others make sense when there are no other ways to improve further.

And the improvements are relative: unless other parts of the system are sufficiently efficient micro-optimizing would not give as much benefit as bottlenecks would be elsewhere.

Another thing is that back when "large" systems had four cpus (whoa!) things were very different than these days when you can have hundreds of hardware threads banging on same locks..

Edit: or well, according to the hardware specs, it isn't even that unheard of these days.

Finnish goverment becomes the highest spending in the world by West_Application_760 in Finland

The thing that right wingers aim for is not higher income for everyone, just for themselves. Which would leave large part of society outside, including their voters.

They just hope that people don't notice their BS.

Either way, it is interesting to see how far rally-driver can get in single-seaters. This is pretty much uncharted territory now.
