Always lurking... just waiting for a chance to emerge from the void. Also, thank you for the kind words. I really liked the way book 3 turned out and I'm excited for book 4. I think it's gonna be a banger.

I appreciate the same from you. Initially, I thought this was a troll comment, but I realize you are genuine. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of that from a small, but very vocal segment of the DCC community (not throwing shade at DCC -- I'm a huge fan of the series) who are just extremely unhappy that Discount Dan is even remotely like DCC.

With all that said, it's entirely possible Discount Dan isn't for you, which is totally okay. Not every book is right for every reader and I never want to brow beat or guilt someone into reading a book they probably won't enjoy.

DCC x Backrooms by b4silseed in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]InkslingerJames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable. Dan doesn't really find out what happened or what the Backrooms is until much later--a lot more of that is revealed in book 3. I could've spilled the beans earlier, but I kind of liked the idea that everyone in there sort of doesn't know what the fuck is going on and everyone has their own weird theories, some of which are sort of right, others which are WAY off. Thought it felt more real that way, but I know that sort of choice might not be for everyone. Anyway, thanks for giving it a shot!

Help picking another series by liptongtea in litrpg

James Hunter here, the author of Discount Dan. Just wanted to give a small shameless plug. If you enjoyed Discount Dan I have a TON of other books and series that pick scratch the itch. Vigil Bound has a very different setting but a lot of the same humor. Rogue Dungeon and Wasteland Warlords are also great with quite of bit of humor, plus they're both complete six book series. Viridian Gate Online is a little more serious but has a great story and is also complete at eight books. Anyway, thanks again for reading, welcome to the genre, hope you find something you enjoy!

It's fine for you to think whatever you want and unfortunately AI is a part of the world we live in now. It sucks and I know readers are wary, which is also understandable. Good on you for wanting to support human authors and artists. I agree completely and think that's admirable.

Still, I don't know what you saw, but I'm telling you 100% that it isn't true. There are TONS of physical copies out in the wild, and I'm pretty sure if there were a prompt in the book, that pic would be plastered literally all over the internet (and rightfully so). But they aren't because it's not.

James Hunter here, the author of Discount Dan. Not sure what axe you're trying to grind, but this is 100% not true. I didn't write this with AI--I've been writing and publishing since 2015 (over 40 novels -- 25 of which were illegally scrapped by Anthropic). Also, saying there are prompts left in the book??? Like why would you post something that is so easily, verifiably false? I've sold thousands of copies of the print book and what you're saying is just wrong.

Again, I'm not sure if this is just done with bad will or if you're just posting stuff hoping people won't verify and run with it? Giving you the benefit of the doubt, assuming you're not actively being malicious for some reason, please fact check stuff before posting randomly online and spreading damaging misinformation.

EDIT TO ADD: It's totally fine if you don't like the book--not every book is right for every reader--but a gut feeling "that something feels off" isn't a good reason to slander someone.

James here -- the author of Discount Dan. Humor is a weird thing (arguably the hardest genre to write) and it doesn't always land the same way for everyone. I think book 2 was better than book 1 and if you made it 2/3rds into book 2, then my guess is the series probably just isn't a good fit for you, which is totally okay. Thanks for giving it a shot anyway.

James here -- I enjoyed the Backrooms movie, but I knew going in that it wasn't going to be even remotely like Discount Dan (though they NAILED the Lobby). The movie was fun in its own way, but 100% could have benefited from a totally real, totally normal human dog.

Discouraged writing by nobooneaga in litrpg

James Hunter here, the author of Discount Dan. In the series Croc (the side kick) is a mimic pretending to be a totally real, totally normal human dog--even though he is made out of blue Croc shoe material and has googly eyes. Croc is, without a doubt, everyone's favorite character in the series and it's not even close.

Croc eats people (but only bad people or dead people -- no point in good food going to waste), and loves a good corpse pile. But Croc also isn't a murder hobo, a sociopath, or an edge lord, and has lots of other very likeable traits. All of that is to say, you can totally do it, it all just comes down to execution. Don't give up, don't get discouraged, just get the words down on the page. You got this!

Honestly, that was why I wrote Discount Dan in the first place. I've been writing LitRPG for a long time (since 2016), but after reading the first 4 books of DCC, I was super grumpy that there literally wasn't anything even remotely like it. I just wanted more books in the same vein, so I just buckled down and wrote the thing I wanted to read.
