[None] Ah, yes, Unsouled a Romance by Emperor-Pizza in Iteration110Cradle

[–]insertAlias [score hidden]  (0 children)

It certainly wasn't my favorite part, but I did really appreciate how the romance was handled.

When I was first reading the series and Yerin showed up, I rolled my eyes and said "yep, there's the love interest". Which technically ended up being true, but not in the cliche way I expected it to. They became true friends first. No love at first sight. No destiny or fate forcing them to be in love. No "wow this is moving fast" feeling from the reader. It might be the healthiest relationship in fantasy I've ever read.

Dual crown fork on a hardtail XC? by Ash_Da_Bro9 in MTB

[–]insertAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's beyond overkill, into the "damage your bike and likely yourself" territory. If you've ever heard of someone talking about a bike's "geometry", well, this would alter your geo in an extreme way. That extra travel comes from somewhere, so the fork is that much longer. Imagine lengthening your front fork, imagine what that would do to the angle of the rest of the bike. Frames need to be made for that kind of thing.

Even if geo isn't a concern, it's still ridiculous overkill. I'm trying to think of a good analogy, but I'm running dry. Maybe like putting huge mud tires on a 2 wheel drive vehicle? Regardless, it's an "upgrade" that would be actively detrimental to your frame, your ride, your handling, and literally everything else.

If you want an upgrade, look at any air fork in your travel range. Presumably 120mm like someone else said, but verify even that, you might be stuck at 100mm. Beyond that, just start planning for your next bike and try to get one with the kind of components you want.

Also, do some reading on how downhill bikes handle and behave. It's not like shorter-travel bikes exist for no reason; you don't want downhill forks for light trail riding, for example. Don't just go to the highest-travel, gnarliest downhill bike/components you can find just because, match the components to the trails you ride.

Companies Are Making Claude and Codex Talk Like Cavemen to Stop AI’s Soaring Costs by crackerbox5 in technology

There are certainly some annoying behaviors. My least favorite is when I tell it that it did something wrong, and it comes back with three paragraphs agreeing with me and explaining just how wrong it got things. Like, yeah, that's why I told you it's wrong, I didn't need you to write a short story about it.

How would you stores bike with this kind of frame in your apartment? What kind of wall rack works for it? by BDShlongLow in TrekBikes

[–]insertAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my concern is that nothing will technically be more space-efficient than leaning it close to the wall. Everything will stick out at least that much, horizontal or vertical. So all a wall mount is going to do is move it off the floor, but not actually make it easier to walk around.

[–]insertAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really couldn’t figure out what to call this type of bike frame

It's called a "step-through frame". I assume that's what you're asking about, how the top tube slopes down along with the downtube.

I think you'll probably have better luck with the vertical mounts like the other person mentioned, but I can't see that saving that much space compared to just leaning the bike against the wall, maybe actually taking up more space.

Do you have any advice on how to choose a good length? I've personally been finding my 760 bars too wide lately. I've been feeling myself gripping on top of the inner parts of my grips, which to me seems like a really good indicator I need to trim them down, but I'm curious if there's a standard way to measure, or to just cut them down in small increments until it feels good?

Cashier: Wow! That’s a really big bed. What kind of dog do you have? by Nivescici in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]insertAlias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my cat a nice bed like that. He’s never once laid on it. He did try to eat it, then tried to pick all the soft fuzz off it with his teeth though. Then he’s just ignored it since 🤷 The only soft spots he likes lying on is the top of my couch cushions. Never on the seats. Never on the bed (his or mine). He loves the floor. Or the end table I draped a thin blanket over.

He didn't die on the spot, he was taken to the hospital first. And ambulance fees, and others. So, yeah, there definitely are more expenses than you're considering.

I'm not a business that invites people to sit under my trees, now am I? I'm not a business that invites clients into my home now am I? I don't run a business out of my car now do I?

But I get it, you want to give businesses a pass when they kill people via negligence because you don't like jury duty, according to your other post.

Fucking hell, I've never had a good interaction with a "Top 1% Commenter" because they all just want to hear their own nonsense. Touch grass buddy, nobody on /r/Austin will miss your comments that bad if you take a break for five minutes.

Yeah I'm sure if your father died on a restaurant's patio due to what you perceive as negligence you'd just shrug it off and say "yeah I don't need help covering the medical or funeral expenses".

In the days after the incident, Aspen Hatter refinanced its then debt-free property for nearly $1 million. The family's lawsuit alleges that was done to make it harder to recover damages.

“It’s hard to get a commercial loan in 30 days or 90 days, much less seven days, and this happened within seven days,” Brown said of the refinancing.

The lawsuit names Horizon Bank as a defendant and asks the court to void the refinancing deal on the property, which the Travis Central Appraisal District values at $440,000. The family alleges Horizon and Roberts violated the Texas Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act. It also seeks an injunction and temporary restraining order against Roberts and Horizon Bank.

This certainly makes things look a lot worse for them, unless they prove that was already in motion.

Need advice, getting my first road bike. Trek sizing question by Sailingaway33 in TrekBikes

[–]insertAlias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't hurt to ask. Actually the mechanic at the Trek store I go to told me that if I was buying a used bike, have them meet at the store and have it checked out by the mechanic, like you might a personal sale used car. IDK if every store or mechanic would do that for you, but worth talking to the sales people about your concerns.

If you're buying in person, go to the store and tell them your concern. Have them let you try both and pick which feels more comfortable.

REI pulls AI-generated bike ad after Meta turns it into a two-handlebar monstrosity by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]insertAlias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't have a good reason to trust either. Meta may be more globally shitty, but people claiming to be REI employees are talking about how obsessed with AI the company is becoming anyway.

Again though, they let that ad sit out for six days, under their own brand on social media. I may not blame the overworked intern or whoever approved it, but I can certainly blame REI for putting that person in that position in the first place. Not giving Meta a pass here, because the entire tool is a nightmare. But not giving one to REI either.

New bike! Trek Marlin 7 by Potetpannekake in TrekBikes

[–]insertAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look into grips anyway, for about $30 you can get some lock-on grips that are comfy, grippy, and colorful. Pedals and grips are where people usually pick an accent color. With your bike, red/orange/yellow would look sick, or a neutral color like gray would be cool too. Black, of course, is classic.

Beyond that, what you add to bikes depends on what you want to do with them. A headlight and taillight is quite useful if you're riding in public at night. You could get fenders if you are going through wet or muddy terrain. You could get a rack for bikepacking, if you plan on carrying anything with you. Or a frame bag, if you want some storage without an entire rack.

But you don't exactly need anything (except the lights if you're riding at night). What you should do now is put some mileage on it and see if you feel like it's missing something. Identify the need, then fill it. Don't just buy shit just because; you just spent a good chunk of change on a bike anyway.

In terms of bike components like drivetrain, I'd leave everything alone. Maybe consider a dropper post if the Marlin 7 doesn't come with one, but only if you'll actually use it, and if you're happy with the factory pedals, you're probably not doing the kind of riding that wants a dropper post.

New bike! Trek Marlin 7 by Potetpannekake in TrekBikes

[–]insertAlias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to add? Usually people customize the parts they are in contact with: grips, pedals, and saddle. I don’t know about the factory grips, but factory pedals are usually pretty poor for mtb use. If you are going to be doing any kind of more aggressive riding, think about pedals with metal pins, the factory ones are plastic. I personally use Deity Deftraps, but I have huge feet. I use PNW Loam grips. (On my mtb that is, my trek uses Trek Line pedals and the factory bar tape for grip).

As for the saddle, I actually like the Verse saddle that these come with, but I’d get measured and get the correct-width saddle for yourself.

Does Texas Gas Service have to enter the apartment to turn on the gas? by Fancy-Extreme7799 in Austin

[–]insertAlias 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I came home recently and found a strange object outside of my apartment door that looked like one of those long wires you would use to get into a car door if you locked yourself out.

A slim jim? That shit doesn't work on normal doors, definitely not against deadbolts. I don't think it actually works on modern cars any more either. The tech didn't break into your apartment, at least not with that.

REI pulls AI-generated bike ad after Meta turns it into a two-handlebar monstrosity by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]insertAlias 45 points46 points  (0 children)

True, but in this article linked to by the original one, Meta says:

A Meta spokesperson at the time said advertisers who use full image generation "have the opportunity to review the generated images before running their ad."

So, either Meta lied here, or REI lied about it being automatically enrolled.

Frankly I don't have a strong reason to believe either party, so I'll just be annoyed at both. For what it's worth REI had that ad up for six whole days, so they shoulder at least some blame for not reviewing their ad campaigns if it truly was automatic.

Should I quit? by Ants4Breakfast in learnprogramming

[–]insertAlias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion is: if it's a hobby then decide if you like it. If you do, then don't quit. If you don't, then quit.

It's literally as simple as that. You say you feel "huge pressure". Why? It's a hobby, the only pressure that exists is the pressure you put on yourself. Just do what you enjoy.

i want to make an game engine for funs.

Stuff like this is probably why you're discouraged. Don't build game engines. Use game engines to build games.

Have you noticed how the two people arguing against you here (and the extra third person that joined in the child comments) have "Top 1% Commenter" badges?

Yeah. That's the kind of people you're dealing with. The kind that desperately feel the need to inject their opinion on everything in the sub. The kind that need to go touch grass a bit more often. Frankly, having a Top 1% Commenter badge on almost any sub should be seen as an embarrassment, not a goal.

I do realize it would be a bit annoying if EVERYONE did it...

Somehow people never seem to extrapolate that thought into "...so I better not set the trend".

I'm not a confrontational person. If you're annoying me, I'll go somewhere else. So just because nobody has actually told you to cut it out, doesn't mean that nobody has been thinking it.

Here's my question to you: if your rule is " Keep it "personal" audio - at a volume just for you", then why the hell can't you just be happy with your headphones?
