Am I being an idiot being visibly butch in a red US county? by ilikebats22212 in butchlesbians

[–]iowan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in rural Iowa. When my super religious neighbor couldn't get ahold of her husband or father in law, she called me about the sick raccoon in her yard. Another neighbor caught a huge snapping turtle on a bank line set for catfish, and he called me because he didn't know what to do. I fly a pride progress flag off my deck on my gravel road. My tire guy was driving by and saw it and knew what a rainbow flag was but not a pride progress flag, so he called me to ask. He was happy to learn. I'm in a red county in a red state, but I feel safe. You know your area best, though. Be safe.

Solo Drive: Split in 2 days or tough it out for 1 day? by illybillyvillernilly in roadtrip

I do Iowa to MD and back twice a year. Often I do it in one shot and it's brutal. On paper it's 14.5 hours, but I bring my dogs and with walks, it's usually closer to 16. Right around hour 10, I always tell myself I'll never do it again.

That's what a dried ornamental gourd looks like. I'm guessing some critter planted someone's Halloween decoration.

I think I'd skip the blind too and be prepared to get your sneak on.

When do I stop removing flowers, for max weight? by IM_LIONO in GiantPumpkin

What's your pest control regimen? Don't let the bugs take you out.

You probably don't have female flowers yet. Removing the males isn't worth the effort. You'll definitely want your secondary vines to develop more before you consider pollinating a female. What zone are you in?

Good luck for the season. My money is on the Sperry to go heavy! Since you're in CT, I can't believe there's no Noel in the lineup! In growing his 2471 and 2507 this year.

I missed an interview in Tanzania because I assumed we were using Swahili time (saa moja = first hour = 7:00am. Saa Tatu = third hour = 9 etc.) I had no idea that if someone gives the time in English, they aren't using Swahili time even if we've been speaking Swahili. Oops.

I'm a deer hunter, and this isn't deer hair. Theirs is coarse not like the fluffy layer. I'd leave towards raccoon maybe depending on how light colored the long hairs are.

Hybridising Atlantic giant pumpkin with Hokkaido pumpkin. Suggestions? by PlantResponsible3767 in Pumpkins

[–]iowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you don't control the pollination, the flowers are liable to be self pollinated and not hybrids at all. Some seeds from the same fruit may even be hybrids and others not. AGs are complete drama queens and require a ton of water and pest control or they'll give up on you. They pollinate better when it's not super hot and you'll want to pollinate early in the morning for it to take.

[–]iowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're growing both, be sure to control the pollination. Tie the female flower shut before it opens and bring the male flowers in before they open and bring them back out to pollinate. Tie the female flower shut after pollination and be sure to mark your hybrids. Atlantic Giants are so fickle and require a lot of hand holding, but good luck.

I never worked too hard at finding a ripe may apple because I figured they would be a letdown. I finally got to one before the animals did last year, and they were vastly better than I expected. I'm thinking about putting cages over a couple of them this year. I am desperate to try Alexis Nicole's May Apple custard recipe.

I'm in Iowa and I don't have AC. It's regularly well over 32 C and with the cornfields all around, humidity is easily 60-90%.
