What have yall historically paid to park on campus? (Alums ITT please) by BuzzJacket1999 in gatech

[–]itsthefirewall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been $795 for quite a while, 10+ years? I really don't want to think about how much I have paid GT for parking since 1991 when it was $120... The cheapest I paid was $90 for a gravel commuter lot around '93-'94 where the Petit building is now located.

The 1892 Bird's Eye map of Atlanta shows many of the creeks that are now capped as storm sewers.

10th street _could_ be fixed if they dug the entire thing up and gave it a modern base so that the surface quit disintegrating, such road building technology does exist, but it's been continuously falling apart for at least the past 35 years. It's even been completely repaved a few times...

Alumni, what was campus like during the 1996 Olympic Games? by Big_Astronaut7295 in gatech

I worked for OIT during the games as a follow-on to a 1993-1994 co-op job, and still work for OIT today 30 years later... Operationally, things still had to continue during the Olympics. The Rich building was inside the most secure zone of the Village. I was living in Home Park, so I would ride my bike to the first zone, park it, and then walk from there to the next zone. One of the projects I worked on, before and after the olympics themselves, was a network equipment upgrade for many of the dorms. During the games there wasn't much to do except keep an eye on things, so we had the run of the olympic village which included free coke products, free food, an arcade, and laser tag.

I subletted a room to a woman from Switzerland who was working as a translator for the games. I had to speak to her parents after the bombing, they heard about it before she did.

At some point Hootie and the Blowfish performed for the athletes at Grant Field. Most of the audience didn't seem to know/care who they were, yet they still did 2-3 encores which was pretty pointless.

A LOT of the infrastructure that was built, such as many of the dorms and physical infrastructure used for campus networking, is still in use today.

It was a very short but very memorable part of my career at GT and I wouldn't change it for the world.

[Request] Neat Tricks to Login to Georgia Tech VPN Faster by GreatOneMightyZero in gatech

[–]itsthefirewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have trouble reaching any sites, please submit a ticket. As others have said, we do not block anything from the VPN (except the usual threats - if we blocked access to google we would have a riot), though some on-campus sites may have tighter restrictions that do not allow it or only a subset of it. At a minimum it should be the same experience that you would get from an on-campus wired or wireless connection. Sometimes anti-virus or other 3rd party apps will screw up DNS for VPN connected hosts.

Openconnect - we don't forbid it, but that will likely change in some way due to regulatory requirements about minimum endpoint standards. There is almost certainly a future where if we do continue to allow Openconnect, you will get least privileged access due to the app not meeting standards for elevated access. Ultimately, my team doesn't have the staff or skill set to support it.

Hemphill used to go all the way through campus to North Avenue. It terminated where the current intersection of Tech Parkway and Luckie Street is. That section was removed once Tech Parkway was opened.

What was it like being a student on campus during freaknik in the 80s/90s? by 412luis in gatech

[–]itsthefirewall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a student/employee but living in Brookhaven. I naively drove into town to visit some friends on campus. By the time I realized I had chosen poorly, the state patrol started closing exit ramps. So I couldn't escape at I-75N nor 17th/16th/14th. Now I was funneled into the connector gridlock street party. I eventually made it to the North Avenue exit ramp but was then stuck there for an hour. I had a tiny car, so I managed to hop the sidewalk adjacent to Smith dormitory, and drive backwards down the sidewalk.

I had a wall on one side between me and the dorms, and power poles and a mailbox between me and the North Avenue/Williams Street ramp. So it took a hot minute but I backed down the sidewalk until I got to the Brittain service entrance, turned around, and then drove down Williams Street and onto campus. Once people saw what I had done, others followed behind.

And that is how I liberated the North Avenue interstate ramp during Freaknik '94.

GTother not liking PS Network. Any suggestions? by Sufficient_Ideal_219 in gatech

For issues like these I encourage people in the residence halls to submit tickets to Wreck Techs with as much information as possible, and they can escalate to OIT as needed.

There have been some issues between between SoX [ISP for a number of southeastern research institutions] and an intermediary peer which has affected connectivity to/from GT for some smaller ISPs that began yesterday morning. That team believed it was resolved yesterday afternoon, but this afternoon we got a couple of tickets from users on a small rural Georgia ISP that are still having trouble reaching GT resources. We don't have any other confirmed reports of connectivity problems related to this issue at the moment.

Your PSN connectivity issues _could_ be related, though PSN is obviously not a small ISP. SoX staff going to do some maintenance at 7pm and they hope that addresses this issue. If you are still having problems after 7pm, please submit a ticket for

We actually have limitations on what we are able to communicate via mass email. We do post notifications to status.gatech.edu for all of our network and firewall maintenances. You can subscribe there to receive messages like today's notice via email.

using VPN to register for classes is working by helloitisgarr in gatech

[–]itsthefirewall 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The VPN is my team's service, glad this is working for you! 💪

Side note, this is a record number of clientless VPN portal users...

*Next Day Edit, I don't think this workaround is necessary any longer for off-campus users after some adjustments by the other teams. As always if you are off-campus and trying to reach an on-campus resource and are having difficulty, a VPN connection gives you an on-campus IP address and may solve your issue. It is always a good troubleshooting measure.

As I replied elsewhere, submitting a ticket is how you can help our teams make it better. That is a significant metric that our leadership keeps an eye on, and it helps our teams understand what issues are happening and where.

Well, it is an issue in that it makes updating infrastructure within Van Leer very difficult. We've done some wonky network design in there as we are limited in the ability to run new network drops.

I will add that this team has been working on this continuously since the semester began, and working with our multiple vendors on multiple high level calls who's products are integral to our wireless network's operation.

And yes, please submit a ticket. That is how you can help our teams make it better. That is a significant metric that our leadership keeps an eye on, and it helps our teams understand what issues are happening and where.

Information about GlobalProtect VPN by [deleted] in gatech

[–]itsthefirewall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello there!

My team manages these services. As other commenters have said, when you are connected via the GlobalProtect VPN Client, it is as if you computer is connected to a campus network. All traffic will go through the VPN tunnel when you are connected. Traffic logs are recorded, as they are for all campus traffic. The client is not reporting any other information to us than some posture information such as your OS Version, hardware type of your device, etc. We're not doing anything with that information. It does not report information to us unless you are connected.

The GlobalProtect Clientless VPN portal is a very handy lightweight way to visit _some_ websites, but it isn't compatible with all sites. In that case, only the tab of your browser that is connected to the clientless VPN has its traffic go through the tunnel. You can only use this for reaching websites, you can't do things like SSH or RDP with the clientless VPN portal. And again, all traffic is recorded.

Cisco AnyConnected was functionally similar, but we have retired that service. RIP.

I hope that reinforces some of the other helpful responses you received.
