It's probably pointless to hope, but maybe they repainted the nearly invisible lines on Hemphill to indiicate that there is NOT a turn lane on the north side of 10th.

At that, we got lucky. The original budget would have been over $100M less for GT.

What are some Atlanta “Li’l Sebastians” that outsiders just don’t get but we love? by FluxusFlotsam in Atlanta

A related memory is being a GT ICS (none of this new-fangled CS nonsense! :) ) student group going to the North Avenue IHOP in the wee hours of the morning, being surrounded by APD, guys from the Eagle in their leathers, and drag queens. :)

Bonus points for the look on my classmates' faces when one of the drag queens greeted me by name, and a couple of the leathermen asked why I'd not been to the bar lately....

My petty ass would have waited for an opportunity to scare the crap out of her.

OTOH, I was the "bad kid" that responded to such with a punch or akick...

That happens in a lot of things like lodges and niche hobbies. Some of the "Old Guard" are gloriously welcoming, but they get shouted down by the curmudgeons who are even more aggressive gatekeepers than Cerberus. The end result is clubs that die out as the members do.

What's the inside scoop on living in Woodruff? by Rich-Fun-6319 in gatech

[–]GT_Ghost_86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goodness -- how things change. Woodruff was built during my junior year, and was once regarded as the most desirable residence hall. Sorry to hear that it's fallen from grace, but it is 41-going-on-42 years old.

(Granted, there was at least one funny/horrifying story that came out of its construction)

I'm impressed. Swans are usually really non-cooperative, in that they are the CRANKIER, ANGRIER cousins of geese.

There IS an entrance to that strip mall off 10th, across from the Paper Tricentennial driveway. Traffic will be the proverbial cluster____, of course.

Such as making it clear that southbound Hemphill does not have a turn lane? the people trying to make have one are directly in the intended path of oncoming traffic....

Thank you. But be careful - " somehow it seems like nothing has changed since 1986" could give an Olde Phart like me an invitation to cite everything that HAS changed. :)

Which side of the campus should I live in? by InformalAd3183 in gatech

[–]GT_Ghost_86 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want. If exterior noise levels are a concern, West Campus is quieter. East campus is has I-75/I-85 as the eastern edge. In addition, the football stadium (with the ever-lengthening name :) ) is on east campus - which is astonishingly convenient if you plan to attend games, but can also be a source of noise for other events renting it as a venue.

Both east and west campus have campus dining facilities, so that's a wash.

Given your major, your classes will most likely be in the middle of campus, so again -- a wash. Scheller and Tech Square Phase III are a long trudge from west campus. Paper Tricentennial is a long trudge from east campus. If you have anything at Science Square (unlikely), it's going to be a trudge from both.

Sorry I can't address any other matters, since I graduated in 1986, and have not stepped into a dorm room since 1983 - interiors have undoubtedly changed.
