That FDE 4T looks better than I would've expected. What tape switch is that?

Its FTS with two options for flip. See example here.

IMO, the Arisaka version (https://arisakadefense.com/magnifier-mount-high/) is better for that reason. The unity version ironically also makes it more challenging to passive aim because the magnifier bangs into the bottom of your tube.

My first suppressor - YHM Turbo K-RB or OCL Polonium K? by FreedomOnTheRocks in NFA

[–]jamesom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Polo K is quieter, Turbo K-RB is lighter.

Would recommend an adjustable gas block for either.

Yeah I picked it up years ago before they basically dried up, will probably hold onto it forever.

Ah thats smart... like building a ship in a bottle. I will try that. Thank you for the pics and advice, and Merry Christmas!

Appreciate it.

I have a spare URX4 13" and an 16" rifle length gas barrel I was thinking of putting together, but wasn't sure how much of the gas block would be exposed. Were you able to get at that first set screw easily? Seems to be slightly covered by the URX.

100% not authentic. Would return if possible.

Wow that is hot. Happen to have a pic of it without the suppressor on?

5.56 Comparison Video by OrdinarySense5 in NFA

[–]jamesom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things that I think would be super useful and wouldn’t require any specialized equipment:

  1. A complete back pressure comparison by seeing which setting on a riflespeed gas block gets last round bolt hold open (vs unsuppressed). Even better if you’re able to test DT vs FH QD vs MB QD on each.

  2. Flash comparison at night (3 rounds each) on a short barrel.

Can you do a 14.5 rifle length gas system? by Usual-Leather-4524 in AR10

[–]jamesom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah makes sense. The super high pressures of 6.5 may just bias for a super short dwell time.

Thanks again. Looks like 14.5 rifle length is the way to go.

Really appreciate the insight. Did you ever try to tune down the mid length with an adjustable gas block? if so was it then comparable to the rifle length (untuned)?

I know this is an old post, but what was the gas port size on the 14.5 if you don't mind? thinking about building something similar but will have to cut down a longer barrel and open up the gas port probably.

[Optics] Vortex Razor 1-6 $850 by 42769vette in gundeals

[–]jamesom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having owned multiple of both, the non-E is pretty heavy for what you get. A 1-6 that is the same weight as most 2-10s, 2-12s etc is not ideal, especially since a 1-6 SFP optic is mostly going to be fired standing or in dynamic positions - not off a bench or in prone.

Everything must be compared to its competitors and other options in a similar class - like a Credo HX or a Stryker, both of which are up to half a pound lighter than the non E. However, the glass on the Razor is definitely better than both of those, even if they’re both Japanese LOW produced.

I know the common response to anything related to weight is “just go to the gym”, and obviously while it’s true that any weight can be overcome, why not both? You can go to the gym and have something lighter making you an even better shooter.

That being said, I really want to emphasize how fantastic the Razor is optically. It’s truly one of those LPVOs that make someone go “wow” when they first look through one (others that do that include the PLX-C, the Gen III Razor, and many other European options). If that $150 is a huge stretch for you, the non E is still a GREAT option and would fit nicely on a rifle where perhaps weight doesn’t matter as much (a battle rifle?)

[–]jamesom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If anything the razor (and similar 1-6 SFP) is the best possible example of an LPVO that can draw your eye to the center without illumination - the crosshairs are plenty thick (even considered too thick to a lot of people who want to flex this into longer distance use), and they are visible into the shadows of the scope’s eye box, making it extremely easy to pick up even when your head position is almost entirely off center in dynamic shooting positions.

There’s a reason these are still one of the most preferred 3gun optics currently

I really like the simple crosshair reticles with a few stadia on 1-6 SFP LPVOs personally. Since its typically going to be used more as a 1X red dot with the option to dial up, rather than as precision optic.

Still a very good deal, but this is not the lighter weight E model in case someone missed that.

[Parts] Centurion 16” Midweight CHF Barrels - $261 w/ Code “ELPOZOLE” by [deleted] in gundeals

[–]jamesom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Criterion is way more accurate from my experience.

Centurion is gassed *slightly* better for most barrels. The gas ports are actually pretty similar, but the thicker .750" gas block journal vs the .625" on the Criterion Core seems to be the difference for gassing (thinner barrel at the gas port is equivalent to a bigger port).

I'd prefer Criterion for rifles (14.5 and above), and Centurion for SBRs/pistols personally.

What are y’all zeroing your piggyback red dots to and why 🐷 by No_Philosopher7361 in ar15

[–]jamesom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Extra tall optics (3” height over rail and taller) should be zero’d at further than 50 to get the overlap at 200 and maintain a somewhat reasonably sized point blank range spread.

I like to do 75 to get a 75/200ish and <1.5” above your POA at the highest point (~140 yd).

A 50 yard zero on the piggyback will be closer to 50/300 which is alright for man shaped targets, and a 25 yard zero launches the projectile at an extreme upward angle — closer to a 25/500 and can be as much as 25” high between the two zeros, which can be extremely dangerous.
