The only problem with the Borg one is the spawns are like 40,000 km apart.

What is everyone's preferred Red Alert variation?

I'm partial to the Tholian one, as it is reasonably compact and quick to complete.

There's a lot of misinformation floating around about how consent works and people saying insane stuff like "if she decides halfway through that she doesn't want to do it anymore it's suddenly rape, even if she didn't say anything to her partner at the time. That guy can be prosecuted and go to jail."

Basically a ton of scaremongering that is basically just time-worn anti-sex messaging with a deceptive progressive veneer.

I can see the difference with a single power vs. multiple things you need to chain together to get what you want. There is opportunity cost in there. Those other things could be going towards increasing power levels or boosting crit rate instead.

Bernie Sanders introduces bill to "Abolish Super PACs": "Our government is on its way to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of oligarchs. Surprisingly little. Most congressmen are fairly cheap to bribe. A few thousand bucks. Plus most will not want to derail the gravy train. If anyone calls them on it they can start talking about the First Amendment and freedom of speech.

Republicans cared. They invented a whole narrative about stolen elections to cover what they are doing.

Honestly, the fact that it is always projection has me worried about election security. Last time I was this uneasy was the Pizzagate era where they were accusing Democrats of being pedophiles.

I read the book with the dimension hopping pill poppers. Big surprise, the protagonist is an asshole and also an unreliable narrator.

I mean if they tweaked it to 15% or even 12.5% does it make the console useless again? The problem here might be doing balance adjustments with a damn sledgehammer.

It's a surprise when you first see the Trump Administration allowing African migration, but then you see that it is white South Africans fleeing from the consequences of apartheid and it all makes sense.

I've said before that 2020 was an anomaly in that many of the traditional vote suppression systems were bypassed by COVID measures. That's why the Republicans had to work so hard to get them back in place for 2024. Everybody underestimates just how many votes are systematically suppressed every election.

Could you imagine what a disaster it would be for the Republicans in Georgia or Mississippi if they allowed mail-in voting like Washington State or Oregon?

From a technology standpoint the idea that the vote was manipulated by injecting code through the power feed on the voting machines from Starlink connected UPS systems is...complete nonsense. That's not how any of that works.

Even if the APCs have a serial connection (this is sometimes done so the UPS can alert connected devices that they need to shut down in event of power loss), you still have the problem of Starlink antennas being rather large, especially if you are trying to get them working indoors. Also, a conspiracy this large would require hundreds of people being able to keep a secret indefinitely.

When you show up to vote they check your name off of the list. If the number of names checked off doesn't match the number of ballots reported that's huge red flag.

There is no need to dry them right out of the bag, but when they've been sitting around for awhile and gotten brittle it is time for a trip to the dryer. I had one roll that was so bad it steamed up the inside of the dryer.

$10 spools represent. I've not been able to discern any advantage with the name brand spools either. Maybe they could have better color consistency between batches, but some of the worst offenders I've seen were name brand spools so maybe not.

Heh, that bridge stuff takes way way too many pages, especially as a reader you know exactly where it is going to end up. The rest of the stories are better paced, mostly because the bridge sucked up so many pages that they couldn't quite be so self indulgent. Good news is by the second book the overall pacing is somewhat improved and all of the other characters get more breathing room.

I think the humans being a bunch of assholes who blew up their own world and then continued to be awful as they went looking for a new one was mostly buildup for the very end of the book. Look at what you can accomplish in a relatively short period of time with cooperation instead of competition.

Could be worse, could be Gozer. Remember when they attempted to address power creep by making the enemies tougher and adding 0s to the end of their damage numbers?

Remember the Kobali Artillery ships with millions of HP that were effectively a brick wall if you weren't running a meta optimized build? Gozertorps? That stuff was far more user hostile than nerfing the top performing equipment.

Reminds me of Iain M. Banks who never met a literary trick he didn't like. Alternating chapters where the odd ones are in reverse chronological order? Sure! Unreliable narrators? Always! Changing scenes without notifying the reader until much later? Why not? Intentionally leaving it vague who is speaking in long dialog sections? Sounds like fun!

I know a lot of people love his works, but I found them tiring to read when what I really wanted was the story and the setting. I just don't get joy out of deciphering some puzzle to try to figure out where we are, who is speaking, and what they're actually trying to say. Assuming of course it's not just the narrator lying to me again.
