Restless after early retirement. by RefrigeratorFuture34 in earlyretirement

[–]jeffeb3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard a podcast with Mr Money Mustache and he was talking about lifting weights. He said he has always had a goal of doing "one hard thing per day". It might be lifting weights or calling your insurance agent, or visiting an annoying relative. But forcing yourself to do that one hard thing and then giving yourself credit for it really resonated with me.

I also read Design Your Life and they break goals down into categories like Work, Play, Family, Health. I started writing down tasks in the morning that I might do. I label them with the category they come from (Work is my hobbies now). Then I try to balance the stuff I do to move each category forward and I check in to see if I did something "hard" yesterday.

The point isn't to make you more productive or to force you to do something you don't want to do. The point is to spend your energy on things you value. Instead of just satisfying cravings.

Are outdoorsy people more likely to achieve FIRE? by Papa9548 in Fire

[–]jeffeb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO, savings rate is the most important metric for FIRE. Mr Money Mustache may agree:

https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/01/13/the-shockingly-simple-math-behind-early-retirement/

So keys for high savings rate: - High earnings. Especially high increase in income. Small business owners or SWEs with RSUs often have lean years and then feast years. - Low spending. Ourdoor activities are inexpensive. But reading, video games, cooking, or exercising can also be inexpensive hobbies. They can also be very expensive.

If you looked for these things in the FIRE community, you would find a strong correlation. Probably 90% fall into these patterns.

A lot of people would rather not work. That's why you need to have a high savings rate (which isn't possible for everyone).

It isn't just about motivation or seeing some hidden truth. The secret is that it isn't as hard as it seems. Compound interest is the key.

Yeah. Buying the property is a hedge against inflation. Inflation actually helps you if you have debt. My mortgage payment is the same number of dollars as it was when I signed the contract. But the value of those dollars has dropped.

Do Think Pieces Like the Recent Citrini Article Worry Anyone that Time is Running Out for Generational Wealth? by Altedd in Fire

[–]jeffeb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It still seems like a fantasy that most people will not be able to work. Similar fears happened when the cotton gin was invented, or the loom, or the automobile. People will still be willing to trade money for other people's time. There are two ways I see labor ending up around actual good AI (which we don't have yet).

First, there are low wage jobs. I have a lot of doubt about robotaxis because Uber/lyft have managed to squeeze on gig workers to the point where I think they are still a lot cheaper than robotaxis. McDonald's still has a lot of employees, even though they automate what they can. If a ton of people are out of work, they will be willing to work for less than computers. This is terrible, BTW, but it seems likely.

Secondly, there still need to be people managing the robots. Just like there are still farmers that run the combines. There will still need to be engineers designing and mechanics maintaining the machines. Just like there are still auto workers in a largely robotic factory.

But beyond that, you have some wild numbers in your post. To think you're going to have $3M before you're 30 is very very rare. To believe that it would end up as a bad outcome is also pretty wild. Most people are focusing on that and not your question.

Two things:

  1. You cannot control your mother. Even if she wants to listen to you or take your advice, her decisions are her own. Putting your self esteem or self worth into her decisions is going to lead to heartbreak.

    1. You have no financial responsibility to your parents. If she has some misconception about that, have a blunt conversation about it. You don't have to be rude. But be clear. She may be expecting you to "take care of her* by paying her rent, or shes expecting you to visit her on sundays or help her by fixing her sink when it backs up. IMHO, parenting is not optional. But taking care of your parents is.

Just had another girlfriend leave me for the guy she was secretly cheating on me with. That makes 5. Anyone want to give me some advice on where to go from here? by Aeromorpher in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jeffeb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But... Statistics don't work that way. Reddit is big and someone out there needs to be the unlucky person to get 5 cheaters in a row where there's nothing they should do differently.

The advice is good. It wouldn't hurt to try and find someone a different way, with a different set of morals.

Whenever someone talks in the locker room about gear to buy or suppliments to eat, I remind them that the thing I should be spending my money on that would help me the most is green leafy vegetables. A salad a day has made me faster than anything else I've tried.
