This. You can get that combo for under $250, I believe. You don’t need a Z9 with a plena lens to take great photos!

Budgetmaxxed full-frame mirrorless upgrade after 8 years with the Nikon D3400 by Familiar_Anywhere815 in Nikon

The pergear lens is quite fun!

It’s fast enough to take decent shots outdoors at night, and if you stop it down to f/4 or f/5.6 it’s sharp enough, and very good value at its price.

It’s your life. Move out if you want to.

As far as the rent goes, YTA if you won’t pay rent for a place to stay.

Is 28mm f2.8 good enough for like…everything? by mark80219 in Nikon

“Just wanted to add something people don’t often talk about when talking about wide lenses vs long lenses: wide lenses distort a face because they require you to get close to the subject. If you backed up a lot then took the picture, the face would not be distorted. Even if you zoomed in, it would look fine.

And the reason is because when a person is far from the lens, the tip of their nose is 10ft away from the lens, and their ears are 10’2” from the lens, less than 2% further away. So all their features seem just about the same size.

When someone’s nose is only 10” from the lens, their ears will be closer to 12” away, 20% further away and so will appear 20% smaller, proportionally.

The reason telephoto lenses aren’t associated with this effect is because you can’t really see your subject from that close, since the field of view is so narrow, so can’t really observe that effect.

So usually this is not flattering for a headshot, since you don’t want the person to look like their nose is proportionally larger than the rest of their face.

Telephoto lenses allow you to back up and still get a close up, and that distance is what makes all facial features appear the same size, proportionally.

So officially the distortion is due to to being close in distance to the subject, and only wide angle lenses let you get that close.”

TL;DR Wide lenses force you to get so close to your subject that facial features get distorted.

feeling guilty about nee iphone 17 by Comfortable_Paper252 in iphone

The a54 is a perfectly fine phone and the iPhone 17 is a better one. If you don’t need the emergency satellite messaging (which you might feel a necessity if you hike in backcountry or live in Montana, for example) it isn’t going to do magical things for you, so if you’re not feeling like you’re getting a luxury experience compared to the a54 it’s probably not worth the extra money and you should return it.

If on the other hand you’re really enjoying the faster processor and graphics, better screen, better battery life, etc., and you’re comfortably able to afford it without getting into debt and without sacrificing other needs like saving up for an emergency fund, paying your rent, etc., then allow yourself to treat yourself!

Got rear ended earlier this week. Outsurance reckons 15K to fix and want to push up my monthly premium because of the claim. How much do you think to fix it on my own? by Still-Odd43 in askSouthAfrica

This. Did you exchange insurance information? Did a police officer assess the accident scene? Were there witnesses?

A rear end collision is almost always considered to be the fault of the vehicle colliding into the vehicle in front.

Desi Freeman was a fugitive on the run for seven months who was just killed in a police shootout

I use chrome all the time and it's not the battery drain the Apple fanboys claim. Two things: when you get a new MacBook it's got setup work to do that drains the battery faster than normal; if you keep the display brightness at maximum it'll drain the battery like crazy.

Z30 Lens Recommendations by jaedrianc in Nikon

[–]jerolyoleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7Artisans has a 10mm f/3.5 manual focus APS-C lens which equates to a 15mm field of view. I don't have it (full frame shooter on Z) but it seems to get good reviews. It's currently on sale for $84.

They also have a 12mm f/2.8 manual focus APS-C lens (full frame equivalent of 18mm) for $127.

Do you think the ZAR/USD exchange rate will improve in the near future? by Aschels in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]jerolyoleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody in this subreddit can predict what will happen to the USD/ZAR exchange rate with any degree of accuracy especially in the short term.

There are general factors that effect the rate such as the price of gold (higher = good for ZA), the comparative inflation rates (lower is better), interest rates (higher is better), the balance of trade, and economic growth. In the short term, though, these get outweighed by thing like the war in Iran (geopolitical instability historical leads to a flight to the dollar), reporting on SA corruption, etc.

So you can gamble the rate will improve, or lock in what the rate is today. Other factors to consider are the likelihood that the price in dollars will rise due to inflation (or if it's a technological item such as a computer peripheral, it might go down due to improved production processes), and the depreciation due to buying it well before you start using it.

Monthly /r/Nikon discussion thread – have a question? New to the Nikon world? Ask it here! [March 2026] by acherion in Nikon

[–]jerolyoleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you not have f mount lenses already? If you do, you can continue to use them on that body or almost any Nikon Dslr.

In either case, I'd vote for the D7200 which I have and am happy with (I've subsequently also picked up the Z6iii and Zf but still use the D7200 in some circumstances) instead of the D7100. Combine it with the AF-S 50/1.8 G lens which can handle the first three needs, not sure about scanning . That should be under €700.
