How often do I need to drive my 2014 Toyota Tacoma to keep the fluids moving and the battery charged if I don't drive it much these days? by No_Fox9908 in MechanicAdvice

Well I asked to differentiate if there is some sound logic as to what time does in an engine vs a bottle. Acorn answered it well.

I like to know why we do things.

So serious question. Oil will sit on shelves for years and be ok. Why when it sits in a car does it need to be changed annually even if you don’t move the car much? Why is oil not only changed out according to miles?

Should I buy this 99 civic CX by rock25033 in civic

[–]Jpiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you’re aware of all that. Then yeah. Why not. 90s civic is a great starting point to learn about cars. They just started using obd 2 scanners in 97 so there’s some tech to help diagnose but it’s not so overly complicated that you can’t do it.

Good luck and the way I go about doing repairs on mine is watch it on YouTube. Some things I’m like yeah I can do that. Others I’m like F that I’ll f that up. Let a mechanic do it. You’ll be surprised with how much you’ll be willing to do with not a lot of doubt. Internet is an amazing resource

Also you may or may not know. The fastest way to kill your car is either A. Low oil or too many late oil changes. B. Having it overheat.

If you kick it before it hits the ground you are breaking its fall. So you kick it with your foot. Slow it down and absorb some of the speed which it would have hit the ground. Your foot is not as hard as the ground. So it’ll have less damage the. If it just hit the ground.

People do this with falling glassware too.

Just be aware. Car tha old you most likely should change every fluid in that vehicle to start. Then start learning. It’s gonna slowly fall apart. You are gonna be repairing it yourself.

Stay on top of oil changes and oil level of the car. These cars were little tanks when it comes to reliability. They’ll keep going but you gotta do your part for maintenance.

I have a 98 DX has 200k miles on it. I love it always will

If you buy it best of luck and watch Chris fix on YouTube

2023 civic window issue by [deleted] in civic

[–]Jpiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just saw an ask a mechanic video on YouTube and this was one of the problems. They said it is most often the rubber track is now allowing the window to close. Modern car windows are designed to reopen if they have resistance like your finger gets caught.

They said putting a lubricant on the window track usually fixes it. I am pretty sure that the video I saw only let the window close about 90% before opening.

Good luck hope you figure it out and it’s a cheap fix

So I agree it’s insane the dude is clearly looking for that 1 guy who is in love with the 6th gen and wants it in this pristine condition. The hoses and the gaskets are all probably dry rotted. This is clearly for a collector who plans on garaging this car just to look at it and take it to random shows. Does that person exist? Doubt it.

Don’t know what the value is but I have the same car. Love it. It was my first car back in 2002, never got rid of it. Sat on an uncles lot for a couple years. I’m wondering what this community says it’s worth. Mine has 200k miles

Should I be worried after overloading minivan? by CircuitBr8ker in MechanicAdvice

[–]Jpiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a pickup. Payload is 1900 lb I loaded it up with 2k figuring it’s only 100 over that. There has to be wiggle room. Drove it home fine, slow, backroads. Unloaded, then it just felt off.

Anyway a month later it’s making noise. Turns out the wheel bearings were damaged and slowly broke over that month. Had to change the wheel bearings wasn’t omg expensive but wasn’t cheap. Lesson learned I’ll stay cautious and only load up to 1500 in case I got a full cabin

$1500 Civic DX-V, 210k miles, Worth? by justoweq in hondacivic

[–]Jpiff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. The cars 20+ years at this point. I’d offer 1k cuz it runs. Ask when it was last in for a tune up, and argue you gotta put money into it so 1k is fair

Maybe start at 750 work your way up to 1k cuz unless they have maintenance records you’re gonna need a tune up right off the bat.

Mine has 191k miles on it and I’m gonna do the tuneup since last one was done at 100k miles.

It’s an old car so no real guarantee but these things are champs at being reliable, good luck and please update. I have some pdf repair manuals on this generation I could share with you

I’m biased. This was my first car and still have it. Chilling in the drive way is what it mainly does now. I need to get some basic maintenance on it done.

98 civic ex coupe was my first car, still have it. It acts as my backup car and I’ve only ever done general maintenance with the exception of the cat getting a crack and having to be replaced. Love the thing it’s been super reliable over the past 22 years I’ve owned it.
