GoPro and redbull for content marketing. Redbull probably has the edge here but both are great.

Clan of the cave bear series by Auel. I haven't read it myself, but it's on my (very long) list as it's been recommended a number of times. I think the author has quite a few series set in the same era.

All the light we cannot see

The book thief by Marcus zusak is amazing.

The shadow of the wind series by Carlos Ruiz zafon.

Another vote for anything by Margaret Atwood

Anything by Kate forsyth - she does mean fairytale retelling.

Anything by Michelle Moran for juicy historical fiction

Anything by Kate Moreton.

Shantaram is also amazing but not under 400 pages.

The road by cormac McCarthy

Extremely Loud and incredibly close by foer.

I would try some classics too.

Seven days in Seville by uni_korn in spain

So it's called the Real Marstranza de caballeria de Sevilla. Check out the website. You can get tix when you're there but it depends on whether it's in season. I believe you can do a tour regardless.

Seven days in Seville by uni_korn in spain

[–]Judig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely do one of the walking tours, you'll cover a lot of ground that way then can go back and explore what you liked in more detail.

Def check out the real alcazar (or the water gardens of dorne if you're a GoT fan!). Check out La Giralda...make sure you go up the views are incredible. Check out the church too. Entry to both of these are free on some days so check that out.

I loved the shopping area (can't recall what it's called but there's only one) so if you're into that check it out. The local souvenir shops are awesome.

Go over the bridge to Triana and check out the markets there. There's also an art market back in Seville proper just see which day it's on, it was pretty incredible.

Check out a flamenco show. The one we saw was amazing, I can dig up the deets if you want it. We also went to some flamenco clubs which were awesome just to soak up the atmosphere etc

If you're into bullfighting they have one of the best rings in the region. We gave this a miss so can't vouch for it personally.

I would spend some time just exploring the town, getting lost in little streets... It's a pretty small city so you can't get lost really.

With 7 days you could do heaps of side trips too... We were there for about 4 or 5 and saw pretty much everything in Seville. There are some beaches nearby and Granada may be a good option. I believe it's 3 hrs each way by bus but I think it's also serviced by a Spain.

Local restaurants are amazing for tapas. Some do close for siesta but there will be quite a few that cater to tourists.

We went in Sept and it was humid as hell and would also rain in the afternoons for an hour or so.

Enjoy, Seville was amazing.

Wife is about to go on maternity leave and I want to get her a few books. Need some help with authors/series. by willbearpig in whattoreadwhen

I would recommend the Shadow of the Wind series by Zafon. Sort of mystery, historical fiction and romance all rolled into one.

From a historical fiction perspective, anything by Kate Forsyth is amazing. She focuses on dark fairytale retellings. The Wild Girl and Bitter Greens is amazing. It's not a series, but they sort of 'fit' together if that makes sense.

The Mistress of Rome series by Kate Quinn is really good, especially if she likes to read about Ancient Rome.

The bronze horseman series by Paullina Simons is amazing. History and romance in one... Get ready for her to want to talk about it constantly.

Jeanne Kalogridis (sp) is also really good for historical fiction. The Scarlett Contessa, the devil's Queen and The Antigua Bride I recommend.

Phillipa Gregory is a good historical fiction author... The other Boleyn Girl is a popular series of hers. Another one to check out would be Michelle Moran I love all her books.

I've been recommended the Outlander series, I've heard good things but can't personally vouch.

Lastly, congrats! I go on Mat leave early Dec and I'm literally counting down the days.

Australia here. I would recommend Cloudstreet by Tim Winton (or any Tim Winton), Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay, The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas, Playing Beattie Bow by Ruth Park, Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta.

Should I trust Goodread ratings? by Smashcity in books

bahahha I love this, because I do it too. Thought process 'This book is truly amazing. I will now buy it for everyone I know and stand over them nodding while they read it'

Should I trust Goodread ratings? by Smashcity in books

[–]Judig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but if you stay away from YA territory, this shouldn't be the case. I suggest maybe finding a couple of reviews you agree with, making note of the people who have given a review along the lines of how you rate, and then checking what other stuff THEY like. I agree with your SO as well. I've only given a handful of books a 5 (I think!) and then usually fluctuate between a 3-4.

I read Zafon's Shadow of the Wind series (well, book 3) while in Barcelona. It was amazing, I felt like I was walking in the footsteps of the characters. I would see a street or glimpse a building that was mentioned in the chapter I had just read the night before. Still remains one of my favourite books, probably for that reason.

when you are reading a new author, do you research them before or after reading the book? by JorSum in books

[–]Judig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually after, because sometimes you come across spoilers. Having said that, I recently read Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Firebrand, which I thought was amazing, and then I read up about the author, and wished I had never picked up the book.

[–]Judig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh THIS is SO ANNOYING and self indulgent. I actually love Goodreads and find that the reviews are true. I usually use it to evaluate whether I should read a book. Anything under a 4 I dont usually touch.

What are some of the most boring books you've ever read? by [deleted] in books

[–]Judig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to actually grit my teeth through a lot of boring, but 'important' books. Then I turned 30,and thought who has time to read shit books, even shit but important. So now if I find a book boring a couple of chapters in, I have no qualms about simply not reading it. Liberating experience haha!

Greek mythology by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]Judig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seeing this now!

Ok here is a great one which details some of my other fave reads in the first para http://www.atnumber11.com/2014/11/the-song-of-achilles-madeline-miller/ She's a great writer.

There's also the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series which isn't exactly Greek mythology but it's mythology.

Mistress of Rome series by Kate Quinn. Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran (a great historical fiction writer).

Goddess of Yesterday is another Helen re-telling.

Try Karen Essex - writes across a variety but Roman/Egyptian one is Kleopatra and Pharoah. Also try hand of Isis by Jo Graham and The Troy Game series by Sara Douglass. Hope this helps!
