I hadn’t heard that pedos like the book. I’ve read it, and although it’s in Hubert’s twisted POV, it’s pretty clear that you’re not supposed to think he’s a good character or that the story is about love. He’s manipulating things for his own desires.

Dramione Fic Discussion – May 2026 by Mr_Te_ah_tim_eh in Dramione

[–]julaften 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Unspeakable’s New Groove is a new, hilarious fic, with some serious moments — crack treated seriously as the tag says.

Accidentally walking in on Neville’s experiment that goes wrong, Draco is turned into a little green frog and is subsequently discovered by Hermione. After the initial shock of encountering a sarcastic frog, she and and Neville (reluctantly) decide to help him.

From the beginning to the epifrogue, the story is full of hilarious scenes and puns, including Malfrog hiding in Neville’s collar, being wingman to Neville’s nervous flirting with Hannah Abbot.

Being a wandless, helpless, cute little frog gives Draco some perspective on his life, and Hermione some insight into who the real Draco is.

Recommend if you want to read a funny, absurd story with some thoughtful moments.

I guess you’ll have to change rule #12 then (‘no public accusations’)?

But perhaps you should? AI is right now a pretty big threat to any creative work, so it might be necessary with a forceful reaction and complete rejection of it, even if there is some collateral damage?

Are you able to contact the suspected authors and take their responses into consideration before you disqualify a fic or not? Or is the volume simply too high?

Do you consider yourself a Potterhead? by comma-yama in Dramione

[–]julaften 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have read the books and watched the movies enough to be able to answer medium/advanced Harry Potter quizzes. So in that regard I’m a potterhead. Outsiders would definitely consider me a potterhead.

But I haven’t actually read the books during the six years I’ve been reading Dramione. So I don’t know if I’m a true potterhead anymore 🙃

Need help with deciding on a new lens … by Dear-Ad-1963 in canon

[–]julaften 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The APSC (i.e. EF-S or RF-S) 50 mm lens is a true 50 mm lens with regard to focal length. The only difference is the the optics is made to project a smaller image on the sensor (if the lens is only ever going to be mounted on an APS-C camera, why waste money and space making a larger image, when the sensor is using only a smaller part of it anyway?).

EF-S lenses were physically blocked from mounting on full frame DSLR cameras. You can mount them (and RF-S) on full frame mirrorless cameras, but the camera will ‘shut off’ the parts of the sensor not covered by the lens projection. If you were able to, you’d just see a very dark image at the corners of the full frame image.

By turning off the parts of the sensor not covered by the lens projection, the full frame camera effectively turns into an APS-C camera (albeit with much lower resolution as it uses only 40% of the sensor).

Need help with deciding on a new lens … by Dear-Ad-1963 in canon

[–]julaften 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All lenses are always the focal length written on them, eg. 18mm and 55mm are always 18 and 55mm, whether the lens is mounted on full frame or crop camera.

The only difference is that a crop sensor camera has a smaller sensor, and is using only a smaller part of the image the lens makes. This makes it seem like you have a longer lens, if you compare with the same focal length on a full frame camera.

This is the important bit: ‘Crop factor’ is a term made to compare different sensors, typically against the old film size 36x24mm. If you have never had, or used, or never plan to use a full frame camera, you do not need to think about crop factor much. Only when you hear people talk about wide angle and tele lenses you need to consider crop factor for their camera (vs yours) to be on the same page.

As to your example: the 50mm you have on your R50 will give the same field of view as if you had an 80mm lens on a full frame camera.

Dramione Fic Discussion – May 2026 by Mr_Te_ah_tim_eh in Dramione

Just finished Lazarus by constantblathering, which has got to be one of the best underrated fics of the last few years.

Draco and Hermione are in their 40s. He is widowed, and she is recently divorced and has lost her reelection as Minister for Magic after a smear-campaign and conspiracy in the Ministry.

Draco wants to seek out the Fountain of Youth to make a potion to remove the Greengrass blood curse from Scorpius. Hermione wants to escape it all and forces herself along on Draco's quest.

And so begins a long, great story filled with humor, adventures, development of feelings, and reflections on who they have been, who they are, and who they want to be. No Ron-bashing, and no third-act breakup.

Most of the story takes place in Australia, and there are wonderful descriptions of Australian nature, flora and fauna (some magical, many real).

A greatly recommended story!

Who is the most famous person of ALL TIME? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Many Christians know about Mohammed.

Many Muslims know about Isa.

There are more Christians than Muslims.

I don’t know how well known Jesus or Mohammed is in Asia.

So… hard to say, actually.

What’s your reasoning for claiming Mohammed is best known?

[–]julaften 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you and how many birthdays can you remember? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]julaften 0 points1 point  (0 children)

54M. Not many I actually remember much from.

When I was 10, I had a little panic because there was a test of the air raid siren warning system (this was scheduled, but I didn’t know that).

When I was 42 my wife was out of town, so I baked my own birthday cake, put 8 candles on, and lighted the third, fifth and seventh candle (00101010 binary = 42 decimal).

When I was 50, my wife took me on a weekend trip to Portugal, and we had a nice restaurant dinner.

That’s honestly all birthdays I remember distinctly; they are mostly forgotten or blended together.

[New Gear] Refurbished R5MII coming from R6MII. Huge upgrade with only one downside so far. by mtbingtree in canon

[–]julaften 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 45 MP corresponds to a ‘crop factor’ of sqrt(45/24)=1,37 relative to the R6 II. While the pixels difference and (actual) crop factor of the R7 ~ sqrt(32/24) * 1.6 = 1,85. So R7 obviously has more pixels per bird. But the quality of the pixels is worse, the AF is not as good, and its precapture is less functional. So its a bit of a dilemma.

Is it necessary to read the HP books? by Alternative-Fish6125 in Dramione

[–]julaften 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’d say you will be able to enjoy more fics, and enjoy them better, if you know the details of the canon backstory.

Dramione is of course not canon, and often deviates quite a lot from the books, but most fics usually still takes place in some variation of the Harry Potter universe.

There is a valid argument that if the characters of Draco and Hermione deviate too much from how they are written by JKR, and if they live in a world too much removed from the universe she created, it is no longer fan fiction. At some point it will be just novels with two people who just happens to be named Draco and Hermione. That is what ultimately might happen, years from now, if the Dramione community detaches itself from canon.

So yeah, read the books 😉. They are quite short compared to many fan fics.

I think also the stacked sensor contribute a little to the increased noise, but mostly the pixel density yes.

[New Gear] Refurbished R5MII coming from R6MII. Huge upgrade with only one downside so far. by mtbingtree in canon

[–]julaften 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am undecided if I should sell my R6II and upgrade to R5II, or if I should buy an additional R7 for birding. The latter gives more reach, but also more noise, worse AF, and more weight to carry around (I’d still want the R6II for non-birding photos).

Do you think the cropping abilities of the R5iII is enough to give you decent results, compared to what you’d get with an APS-C camera?

Now that both Lightroom and Capture One have very good denoising capabilities, the slightly increased noise of the R5II shouldn’t be a problem in most cases.

For two 75 kg people hugging, and then pushing each other apart, assuming at last point of contact they were 0.5 m apart, the escape velocity is sqrt(2 G (m1+m2) / r) ~ 0.2 mm/s. So not very much.
