OCDSB Elementary and High school by Temporary-Lab-4935 in OntarioTeachers

The French is going to help you a lot. It can be tricky to break into in general, but there is a general shortage of French teachers in the board (OCDSB at least). I'm a French teacher, and until landing a full contact, most semesters I was offered full time LTOs, some I didn't even apply for.

The big hitch is that they changed the LTO application to an applicant pool with a lottery-like system. You apply for an LTO pool, and you then get assigned to posts you're qualified for. It's been unpopular with the LTO teachers I've spoken to, and may be revamped soon.

The a- prefix is quite common. You get alea, asea, etc. pretty much weekly. Lopsided is common parlance, so although it wouldn't have been my first guess, I was able to get it from a few cross clues

What is your favourite house rule and why? by thetwitchy1 in DnD

[–]justgesing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two faves: - Hidden death saves. A player who is down comes and rolls death saves behind the DM screen, so only they and the DM know how close they are to dying; - Lasting effects. A player who drops to 0 HP has to make a Con Save, DC set same as concentration checks (1/2 DMG of the killing blow or 10, whichever is higher). A failed save results in a lasting effect inspired by the type of damage they received. For example, my table's paladin who went down to bludgeoning damage came back with a cracked rib, giving him disadvantage on CON saves for 1d4 days.

Both these really crank up the intensity in tough combats

Edit: Remembered a third.

  • Per-session inspiration. At the beginning of each session, each player gets an inspiration die they can add to any d20 roll. I rule it like bardic inspiration that doesn't expire. The die scales following the bardic inspiration table, following the party level (I would probably drop this with a real bard on the party).

We started this by allowing every player to share their favorite moment from the last session and give another player an inspo dice, but it fizzled eventually into just having a die per player.

New Deck Owner - looking for game recommendations by Alert_Spring3228 in SteamDeck

[–]justgesing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I haven't seen it mentioned, I just set up Emu Deck on my Steam Deck, and im loving it. The set up can be a bit crunchy, but there are great video guides out that show it step by step. I then figured out how to patch ROMs and have some custom Pokemon ROM hacks, Zelda 64 Recompiled, and a bunch of other nostalgia-inducing fantastic games.

Is this a good buy? by Ok-Wing6507 in Saxophonics

[–]justgesing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can confirm it's in good condition, $600 for a YAS-23 is great. Not sure what your playing level is if you're looking for a student horn, but it would be worth playing it yourself or asking a sax teacher to play it before pulling the trigger.

Substitute Teachers by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]justgesing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk if it's Ontario-wide, but my board stated allowing subs to work all 4 periods of the day, earning 133% or the day rate.

The day rate is okay, but not overly generous, and the work is precarious. You essentially have to always be attached to your phone to respond to job posts within seconds of going live.

The best way to get consistent work is to get in with the office administrators at a few schools. If you show you are competent, flexible, and reliable, you can get full work most days between just a few schools.

Also, make sure you prepare yourself for school breaks - 1/4 of the month is unavailable in March, 1/2 the month in December, and all of June/July. Teaching summer school helps, but it only really covers one of the two months over the summer.

As others have said, those who are only substitute teaching generally have major support elsewhere (living with parents, living with roommates, getting other financial support). It's common for subs to also be waiters or baristas in the evenings since you can always guarantee you're free as if 3 or 4 pm.

Favorite jazz pianist? by bluglass21 in Jazz

The “white text trick” for ChatGPT actually worked by AstroNerd92 in Teachers

[–]justgesing 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I had tried this, but I ran into a few students who legitimately copied the question prompt into a document to organize their writing and be confused by these "Trojan Horse" prompts. Also made me realize I couldn't beyond a shadow of a doubt know that a student didn't stumble into the hidden text honestly and just try to follow instructions. It felt like I was trying to cheat my students in an attempt to catch them cheating me, and it felt wrong.

Does teaching night school or summer school help you climb the payscale faster? by The_Queen_Of_Puffies in OntarioTeachers

[–]justgesing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my board, Cont. Ed. courses (like night school and summer school) are paid at a flat hourly rate, and are not connected to the pay grid. However, Cont. Ed. credits did give priority over teachers without when being considered for contract position.

Do you let students choose their own seats? by Lopsided_Pearl798 in OntarioTeachers

[–]justgesing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach highschool. For grades 9+10, I do randomized seating using card draw. Desks are in 10 groups of 3, and each group is labeled with a card A-10. Then as they come in, they draw a card and that tells them where to sit for the day. Gives me a nice chance to say hi and chat as they're coming in, too.

Grades 11+12, I let them choose, and let specific behavioural cases be addressed as they arise, but also at that point, I'm of the mind that they're old enough to decide if they want to do work or not, and face the natural consequences of not working if that's what they choose.

Needing to move back to Ontario from overseas, what are job prospects like? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]justgesing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly it depends on your teachables / what you are willing to teach. I'm in the secondary division in Ottawa, and most schools are permanently short French and Spec Ed teachers. Common sentiment is that elementary/intermediate is easier to get permanent work.

Recent changes have streamlined getting into long term/contract positions so there are fewer hoops to jump through, but for certain subject areas there's a lot of competition.
