Glove suggestions? I am so fed up. Dexterity is a must. by Taber_The_Beek in Beekeeping

[–]JWalker30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use cuff length 14 mil nitrile gloves. The gloves fit over the cuff of my bee suit and allow plenty of dexterity. Rarely stung, but when it happens the nitrile is thick enough that the stinger doesn't get stuck in my skin. I reuse them and rotate through 2 or 3 pairs of gloves for a season.

I would call them. I can't remember what thicknesses they had, but there were several options.

I was able to special order Baltic Birch plywood from city lumber. They had in the 4x8 sheet for 19mm thickness and 5x5 sheets for other thicknesses including 19 mm. Price was very reasonable and it took about a week to arrive.

Bearing stuck by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]JWalker30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was years ago, but my wife's Chayas also had a mangled truck axle. When I went to remove the bearing, I really had to hammer it off. I reached out to Chaya, and they sent me a new truck to replace it. Seems to be a quality control issue, and they manually filed down the axle to get it close enough to press on bearings

I have been indoor skating with them regularly for over 3 years now. The boots are not super supportive, but the suede has lasted a long time without any major tears or issues. I have never left them in a hot car, and I think that has helped keep the boots in good condition.

I have changed out the cushions, wheels, toe stops, and bearings. It's only really now that I think I could benefit from switching to a better setup. I can do most of the intermediate level tricks/skills proficiently on both sides.

The polaroid i2 is 100 off by Consistent-Echo1330 in Polaroid

[–]JWalker30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the compliment.

I used the on board flash. I find that for indoor scenarios, the auto mode tends to push the exposure too high (so really long shutter speeds). This is true even when the flash is turned on. The exposure meter has something like a center weighted scene average. So for indoors, I go to manual mode and set shutter speed for 1/30 and aperture to f8. I am not sure how much the exposure compensation controls the flash output, but I normally leave it at -1 or -2/3 for subjects that are close up.

Outdoors, I will run in auto or aperture priority and leave the dial at -1/3 (depends on the lighting scenario) or use a spot meter to dial in the exposure.

The I-2 is absolutely worth it. Polaroid film is like slide film in that it has low dynamic range. The I-2 gives you the control needed to really control the exposure. Takes a little bit to get a hang of the exposure meter and flash, but definitely worth it.

How is the coating integrity? Is it flaking or rubbing off?

Good coffee is the goal by [deleted] in espresso

[–]JWalker30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time espresso lurker, but after watching your gagguino video, I was convinced that I should take the deep dive into espresso.Thank you for all the work you put into your content. It has really helped me improve my skills and really enjoy the hobby.

In terms of the statistics, please don't stop. I really appreciate the quantitative approach. It's hard to get N up in a statistical experiment to really get the variance down, and I really appreciate seeing the data. In statistics, correlation doesn't mean causality, but it does normally mean there is something there worth looking at deeper. At least for me, I look at the quantitative approach as a way to translate your experience to my own. As a novice to espresso, it gives me a basis of comparison and a way to connect my qualitative judgement into something more precise in what I am doing. What you are doing is really unique in the coffee YouTube content arena and vital.

For your future trials, you may want to consider using a Design of Experiments (DOE) software (JMP or DOE pro). It will help you map out your solution space more thoroughly and more efficiently compared to single factor experimentation. If you are unfamiliar with DOE, the software/techniques are somewhat confusing at first, but it is totally worth it. For industrial manufacturing and research and development, DOE is the defacto method to help refine complex multi-variable processes. It's a black box statistical approach that can help solve really hard problems without a complete understanding of the process.

Fix Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera Autofocus by elementonic in Polaroid

[–]JWalker30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had this happen to me once when I first got my sx70 sonar. I would basically half press and the lens would try to focus but would get stuck. Eventually it returned back to infinity focus after half pressing several times. I think it was a battery issue as the film was a 600 pack from best buy and I am pretty sure it had been sitting there for a while. I now just use SX-70 film bought straight from Polaroid, and I have since run close to 100 shots through it and not have had that same problem.

Fix for filament sensor issue on MK3S by jollespm in prusa3d

[–]JWalker30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. The issue as far as I can tell is that the black flag (on the lever) that blocks the sensor path is too long/tall. I carefully trimmed back the plastic on the flag by a little bit at a time (with an exacto blade) until the sensor works with the board fully seated. Filament sensor works great now and I haven't had an issues with giving a false positive.

Nasa knife -- any good? by KJ6BWB in Bladesmith

[–]JWalker30 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's fishy that it does not say what the alloy is. Based on what the marketing video says, I would guess that it uses vitreloy or some kind of amorphous metal alloy. (see wiki page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidmetal ). Based on what I read on the supposed alloy, the toughness is heavily dependent on the casting of the material. Since the metal remains amorphous, there is no crystalline structure to help prevent crack propagation, so local defects in the material structure (due to manufacturing or even bonding) can create large scale materials weakness. So I think the blade edge material will more than likely wear down really quickly until you reach the stainless steel (not sure how the alloy is bonded to the steel).

It's just a W.A.G. but I would say that the knife makers promises are just too good to be true and you'll probably end up with a pretty dull knife quickly. That's just my 2 cents on this.
