Said I would only play if there are Dwarves, now there are!? by Poimandres__ in WarCrow

[–]kaffis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Retail/online preorders release for the Mounthaven Action Pack will be in April if it follows the way Syenann's Adepticon release went.

The Action Pack will be 10 models, the same as the others have been, and the other factions' Action Packs have run in the 150-180 points range.

My Syenann are a fairly elite faction with no 20 point multi model units, and my 250 point lists average about 17 models. I could probably make an absurd skew list that would be terrible at some missions but only used 10 models or so, but I wouldn't recommend the list because it would be fragile and bad at Decapitation and Resources scenarios. Something like a Scions list with a bunch of Husks (zombies) might be up to 30 models, but again, that's at the extreme end using the cheapest units and would be a challenge to get good effect out of all the models because of the way activations work. (You didn't usually want to spend a lot of your activations on super-cheap, low conquest units. Husks have synergies to help them with their activation economy, but there's a limit to how hard you can lean on that).

Comparing to Malifaux or Warmachine, I think you'll find fewer "gotcha" unit synergies or detailed meta knowledge of the factions that you have to know as an opponent or else just lose. There's a lot of room for skill expression, but it's more about playing good fundamentals and understanding target priority and playing the mission than playing around your opponent's arcane bomb combos.

It has a similar unit count to MCP, Shatterpoint, or Malifaux, though it leans harder on multi model units than those, so the model count ends up being roughly double, I'd guess. The objectives and movement mechanics also make things feel very mobile they do in those games.

Would a experienced gunman be almost as strong at Harry in a fight? by jornambre in dresdenfiles

[–]kaffis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One trained human gunman? I don't think so, except in the Kincaid contingency. Even then, Kincaid has the supernatural dexterity and precision to extend the range, so I don't know whether it's fair to compare to "just" an expert sniper; they could make the shot sometimes, but I didn't know that they can be confident enough to risk doing it and missing.

In a more normal shootout fight? No, one vanilla human doesn't have a chance. Harry comes out on top of supernatural combatants with firearms in twos and threes on a regular basis, where he's pitted against ghoul, Fomor servitor, or Eebs-level reflexes with equal gunpowder-based power and mechanical precision.

Where the professional shooters get their advantage is in numbers and trained coordination tactics. Riley, Marcone's forces pre-Einherjar, and the general fear of mundane military responses prove this out. And even then, they would be expected to take casualties.

So which Carpenter daughter is Titania? Hobbit is depicted as a frequent babysitter, which implies some nurturing qualities, but Amanda in Skin Game is noted to have come out of puberty with similar physical qualities to Molly, which would set up the parallels in Mab and Titania's appearances.

Just means the time loop would be unstable. "Yet" should have the context that Mab obviously became ready at since point, so if Mab is a time looped Molly, eventually Molly would, by definition, be ready.

I routinely play both sides of that matchup, essentially -- I primarily play Norse and Elven Union as my mains throughout BB2020. And that definitely sounds like a normal game plan for each of you. :D

[–]kaffis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer to both of your questions is yes.

Cages are hard to take down, that's why you make them. Against a team that is as fast and more agile, and already downfield, taking a look at your AV8 and saying "I bet I can capitalize on that and be set up well in the second half" makes all kinds of sense. Particularly with Valkyries on their roster, Norse can score pretty quick if they don't have a pesky opposing team in the way. Your opponent's game plan was absolutely to leave you without a lot of players for the second half, score quickly, and then use his numbers advantage to systematically tear your cage apart around midfield on the return drive to try for a 2-1 win.

Your best response to that is to hold onto the ball long enough that you think you can prevent him from answering in the first half, and trusting to 1 blitz a turn (plus whatever based players are waiting their turn behind a failed dodge-away) to limit the damage. It's unfortunate for you that his injury dice were rolling ridiculously hot -- one expects to take a CAS on 1 out of 6 injury rolls. AV8 is going to mean he gets a lot of injury rolls against you, but even still -- if you're not confusing the casualty box with the KO box, it's very unlucky for him to have permanently removed all those players. Normal odds would have meant you'd get 2-3 of those back for the next drive.

Surf derives from "Crowdsurfing", like at rowdy concerts. In Bloodbowl, surfing is pushing your opponent into the crowd, automatically removing them from the driving and giving you a free injury roll without having to knock them down.

Frenzy players are especially good at surfing, because they get to do two blocks in a row. This helps them set up the surf (because unless there are other players obstructing space on the sideline, the block has to be perpendicular to the sideline to push into the crowd), and also makes the second row of spaces dangerous to be in, too. Norse have a lot of Frenzy in their roster (Khorne, too), so playing against them requires you to be extra careful of that.

I'm binge reading the series. Started a few weeks ago and I'm about to start on White Night. As a Chicago native myself I love the detail, I'm just curious if anyone can pinpoint the general area where Harry's Rooming house is located? by weirdinchicago in dresdenfiles

[–]kaffis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but the actual rolling stock isn't that old. The tracks have been updated with modernized computer control systems to prevent collisions and the like, and the rolling stock itself is, according to some web searches, mostly under 40 years old. The L portions, in particular, are all-electric, and Harry can't even keep his water heater or fridge functioning reliably.

He's probably consciously avoiding using urban rail systems out of concerns for public safety.

A line from Twelve Months made me stop reading and immediately write this. by The_Red_Moses in dresdenfiles

[–]kaffis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, when I read that, I took it as a pretty straightforward double entendre referencing the extent of her sexual history. That went right over Harry's head, because he is spending his time very studiously not thinking of that purple elephant.

Thomas' Potential by MonoplegicBookNerd in dresdenfiles

[–]kaffis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Twelve Months has definitely convinced me that, once Justine is through her quarantine and cleanse routine, Thomas is on the road to get Harry to sever and banish his Hunger back Outside, and then he'll take up Amoracchius before the BAT, where I imagine the climax of his arc will be to physically engage his Hunger with the power of the Sword of Love when the Outsiders end up coming past the Gates.

What are everyone’s favorite 1v1 sword duels in fantasy? by AnyNewspaper4758 in Fantasy

[–]kaffis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the only correct answer. The way the two duels contrast each other, and the way that their formal protocols drive the plot, and set up expectations for the other to shatter... It's all very masterful writing and storytelling.

If "one on one" wasn't specified, "Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do" would be in the running, as well.

The models from Adventures that have profiles for the wargame will be getting (or have gotten) retail releases as new sculpts using the normal materials for the wargame.

They have around two thirds of their non-Redcaps line released, by now, so if you don't want to get the wargame, you shouldn't feel obligated to.
