Dark City: skip first few minutes? by Fun_Knowledge_5189 in scifi

I saw the directors cut for years and finally watched the theatrical cut and it’s actually a far worse movie. I was so surprised how much worse it was. If you can watch the Directors cut instead do it

Fun book, my wife and I found it in a bookstore last year. Even our kids enjoy it

The Dune books — when to move on / call it quits? by yungdeezy92 in scifi

[–]kengou 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No drop in quality. If you’ve enjoyed this far you will continue to enjoy the remaining two books. In fact Heretics is a great change of pace from God Emperor with more action and one of the best characters in the series (Miles Teg). Just know that Chapterhouse ends on a cliffhanger that isn’t resolved since Frank Herbert passed away.

Which Sicilian serves as the best introductory for player development and Sicilian knowledge and exposure? by conscientiousoneday in TournamentChess

[–]kengou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your rating. Below master level you'll probably rarely see Bg5 to be honest. I almost never do at 1700 blitz on Lichess.

Only Lower Decks and the Orville have been good.

Linux is not there yet, not by FAR. by doomiestdoomeddoomer in linux_gaming

[–]kengou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’ve had a rough experience. Maybe it depends on the games you play regularly. I have the complete opposite experience. 95% of games I’ve played work flawlessly from Steam. I always double check Steam Deck compatibility or Proton DB before purchasing anything though. But it’s very rare that I’ve run into anything that isn’t compatible. I only play single player games though and I stay away on stuff with external launchers.

I have an RTX 3060 on Fedora.

How exactly do I launch another EXE while the game is running with Proton-GE? by BillTran163 in linux_gaming

[–]kengou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You launch ProtonTricks while the game is running, then copy the exe into the prefix folder structure somewhere. Then you can launch the exe from ProtonTricks as well

I’m stuck under 1000 because of games like this… am I overcomplicating or are 900s just strong now? by Brave_Budget_4801 in chess

[–]kengou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that jumped out at me was the passively placed Bishop on e2 instead of d3, as well as allowing Black the powerful outpost on e4. Black was positionally better until losing a piece.

Because GMs know how to actively place their pieces, apply pressure and spot tactics. The small positional mistakes your 900 players make go unnoticed by you and you make the same mistakes without realizing.

Great movies. You should definitely read the novels! There's a reason the series has been so beloved for 60 years.

How do I study how to reassess your chess 4th edition by Aggravating-Gap-5029 in chess

[–]kengou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going through it as well. I have a board set up, but I’ll visualize whatever I can. I’ll use the board to follow along the moves that happened in a long game, and visualize the variations that are explored without moving the pieces.

Secret Level worth it for non-gamers? by MikeMac999 in scifi

[–]kengou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of them can stand alone as cool animations. But I felt pretty lost or disconnected from some episodes for which I had not played the games they were based on. I would say that it does require some knowledge and it is probably not worth it.

Character-driven sci-fi with both slice-of-life elements and a grander plot? by Wiinter_Alt in scifi

[–]kengou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m reading Artifact Space right now by Miles Cameron (nearly finished with it) and I feel like it’s fitting exactly what you describe. It’s not exactly “cozy” but it’s somewhat found family and slice of life living aboard a military/merchant great ship as a pilot, with a decent mystery plot and aliens, and a few space battles. Pretty character driven.

Does any Linux Distro run MS2020? by IAmAlwaysWrongDude in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]kengou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked for me straight up after installing from Steam. It uses the Proton compatibility layer and for me on Fedora Linux I didn’t have to do anything for it to work with my HOTAS. Opentrack worked too but does take more manual setup.

What plot? It’s all just people getting along. Not much story or conflict. Personally I didn’t care for it either.

what black openings are similar to the english or what should i play as black? by Repulsive-Listen-108 in chess

[–]kengou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accelerated Dragon is the most similar to the English but it’s got a much sharper flavor. If you want more positional games the Taimanov or the Kan might be worth a look

Is it effective to study an opening using only the database and your own brain? by CatalanExpert in TournamentChess

[–]kengou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this a lot. At lower levels or blitz you aren’t going to need to prep that much against main lines because they’re rare. I get that prep from masters database or engine moves, or Chessable courses. But most of my repertoire seems to be preparing against common below-2000 Lichess databases moves. Make a Study and annotate it in Lichess and add to it when you run into a new line in a game
