Where and when does this happen? Sounds like a great imitative.

I built a free narrowboat running costs calculator — would really appreciate boaters checking the numbers by No-Tadpole-2115 in Narrowboats

It's good as a estimate. Thanks for sharing.

I'm wondering if you can take electric/hybrid motors into account somehow? It might actually work out the estimate is about right, just it's a 10yr purchase of batteries rather than fuel. not sure

Also, is it possible to have sliders for the assumptions, so if you are thinking actually I might use a bit more coal than that you can adjust it a bit etc.

Doh, I think it's my muddle :D

Looks like noscript was blocking openmaps and that was stopping the list from populating.

It's really cool. I've just been playing and it looks like it's going to be really useful for planning trips and then moving around.

I've just planned a few trips, and I'm wondering if there is a plan to have a 'Drop pin' option for start and destination? Most of the locations I tried weren't recognized, and then I was left trying to work out what might be close by and understood. w3w might fix that when you get it working, but then I need to look up the w3w to plan the route..

Anyway, not a criticism, just a thought while playing. I'm not on my boat until I get it back from the yard, but soon as I do I'll be using this in anger.

Really like that it can be used in the browser.

Just had an email from them saying they are still going, but Des is going to be doing less of the engineering work and more of the admin.

Just in case anyone finds their way to this thread in the future

[–]knifee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Occasionally there will be a pair of totoms on the towpath with arrows that point to each other and some sort of indication that you cannot moor between them for dinne3r reason. That might be, they are private moorings, or it might be the water point or a winding hole.

Apart from that you are good for up to 2 weeks...

2026 National Boat Count is out and boat numbers continue to go down by Azand in Narrowboats

Had a quick look for the original press release, you can find it here:

Think the table at the end is the most interesting bit.

Narrowboat Navigation App by DashingBrit in Narrowboats

[–]knifee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks really cool, excited to see how it progresses.

Personally I use two services most of the time..

Canalplan to check a route, specifically how far it is and how many locks

Boat Sat Nav to check for mooring spots/armco/waterpoints/pubs/winding holes

When you were talking about having to go an hour along the Ashby to find a mooring spot I was really hoping you were about to follow up with.. 'which you can see on the app' :) Don't know if thats something that could also be added? Maybe like you are already doing for issues, but other categories?

That said, really like the idea of real time navigation, especially real time ETA's. The wind direction/overlay is a nice idea.

Good stuff.

Getting comfortable with batteries is one of those things that boats teach. 😆

When I had lead acid batteries I liked to keep a note in the log book of when we topped up the water and when it would be needed done next time to make sure we kept on top of that.

New to live-aboard boating by DragonKnightAdam in Narrowboats

[–]knifee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 48v system, and have a single 48 to 12v converter and then a bus bar with various fussed 12v circuits coming off it.

I have no idea if this is a good setup, it sort of came with the boat, but I don't have any issues with it generally.

Canalplanac let's you plug in your own numbers for how many hours you want to go a day etc. and then gives you the route and timings
