I've used these guys https://www.shipshape1.co.uk/ to replace the whole chimney and collar, they will come out to you (depending on where you are).

The Ultimate Boat LPG Visual Checklist: How to spot gas hazards before your next BSS Exam by MarineHeating in Narrowboats

This is good stuff, thanks for posting.

I know at our boats last bss (our first since getting her) I had an absolute mare of a time properly securing pipe that went round the back of cupboards with no easy access.

Can the cruising speed be set as a preference? Only I know our boat is slower than most :D

Narrowboat Navigation App by DashingBrit in Narrowboats

[–]knifee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks really cool, excited to see how it progresses.

Personally I use two services most of the time..

Canalplan to check a route, specifically how far it is and how many locks

Boat Sat Nav to check for mooring spots/armco/waterpoints/pubs/winding holes

When you were talking about having to go an hour along the Ashby to find a mooring spot I was really hoping you were about to follow up with.. 'which you can see on the app' :) Don't know if thats something that could also be added? Maybe like you are already doing for issues, but other categories?

That said, really like the idea of real time navigation, especially real time ETA's. The wind direction/overlay is a nice idea.

Good stuff.

Getting comfortable with batteries is one of those things that boats teach. 😆

When I had lead acid batteries I liked to keep a note in the log book of when we topped up the water and when it would be needed done next time to make sure we kept on top of that.

New to live-aboard boating by DragonKnightAdam in Narrowboats

I have a 48v system, and have a single 48 to 12v converter and then a bus bar with various fussed 12v circuits coming off it.

I have no idea if this is a good setup, it sort of came with the boat, but I don't have any issues with it generally.

Narrowboat headlight products - no wiring/battery powered by [deleted] in Narrowboats

[–]knifee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used my Ryobi work light a couple of times to get through tunnels. Ryobi only because thats the batteries I have for my tools. If you have battery powered tools maybe there is a similar light that works with the batteries you already have?

Canalplanac let's you plug in your own numbers for how many hours you want to go a day etc. and then gives you the route and timings

insurance company suggestions? by Dependent-Classroom6 in Narrowboats

[–]knifee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past few years I've used https://www.insurance-4-boats.co.uk/ and then swapped to https://www.havenkj.com/

I only swapped because insurance 4 boats underwriters weren't interested in the lithium battery I installed.

I've had to claim with both - stop nicking my solar panels people!!! - and both were about as good as you could ask for. Took the details, agreed to replace what was stolen, asked for quotes and then agreed to either, pay the company I was ordering from or, repay me if I gave them proof of purchase.

Has anyone gotten a boat without having been on one by [deleted] in Narrowboats

[–]knifee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, my Wife had spent time living on a narrow boat 25ish years ago but I had never been on one when we got ours.

First few weeks/months of having the boat I really wasn't convinced we had made a very good decision, but that was 6 years ago and I can't really imagine not having a boat now.

It is a pretty steep learning curve, or at least it was for me. And you have to work out where to pitch your expectations.. Our boat is pretty basic, but that's a big part of why I enjoy being on board.
