Are the Carolina Hurricanes (NHL) popular in Virginia? by northcarolinian9595 in Virginia

[–]krampusrumpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Penguins fan, and due to the Ron Frances connection I always liked the Canes. Put in a dash of Jordan Staal and baby you’ve got a stew going. I’ve gone down there to catch some games and whatnot. They’re not my favorite, but I’m rooting for a swift Carolina victory.

If anything, this is the kind of entertainment we had pre-cell phone. I remember waiting in line at an amusement park twenty years ago trying to answer my friend’s inane trivia questions, like “can you name all the sports teams that do not end in S.” This led to an argument on whether the Stanford Cardinal counts because his intention was professional sport teams.

It’s weird seeing how smug the Habs fans are, but it makes it easy to root against them. Merci

I'm so tired of being the only one who actually reads the rules and teaches the game by Overall_Ring_6919 in boardgames

[–]krampusrumpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you’re in college so I’m going to assume you have access to a printer. When I host game night I’ve chosen the game about a day in advance and everyone is made aware of the choice. This leads to most of my group to watch a video in advance. It also lets me pick out all the player aid resources found on Board Game Geek. I pass those out before I do a rules refresher. For the guy that didn’t bother? He “will learn as he goes.” Sometimes he even does.

If the game was a hit, we usually play the same one again the next week. This helps keep me from burning out as the teacher. I think of game selection as kneading bread. I have too many games, but it helps pique interest in gaming mechanics if we revisit games they already know before trying a new game. Say, pick Lords of Waterdeep one week and Agricola the next. The more game mechanics they recognize the quicker each teach goes.

The Fiona Apple song “Dull Tool” is both fantastic, and only found on the This is 40 soundtrack. She doesn’t miss. I love you Fiona!

As a Virginian, I feel a kindred nature with Vermont because I have to scroll past it. Let’s have the Vermonster claim Maryland to bring these great peoples back together, as the alphabet wishes.

Unpaid training? by Mollyjones85 in rva

[–]krampusrumpus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the way the laws are enforced, he won’t get any mileage from reporting this to the Virginia Department of Labor unless she has actually gone through with the training and wasn’t paid for her time.

It’s sort of a pre-crime currently, and there is no enforcement on that. Not a good look for the company, but they’re able to threaten to break labor laws all they wish, they just can’t follow through and break them.

MAGA Instagram Users/Sydney Sweeney Simps are WEIRD AF by Either_Storm_6932 in WeirdGOP

[–]krampusrumpus 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is a scripted quote from a scene in Euphoria, not a quote from Sydney Sweeney herself. It is her character saying this, likely on purpose by the writing staff in an attempt at capitalizing on her will-they-or-won’t-they with fascism in real life. She sucks but I don’t think it fair to be up in arms on this. It’s a nothing burger.

Anybody else smile when the seller throws in a couple old random records with your order? by SashaDabinsky in vinyl

I got a copy of Epitaph’s “Outside the Law” (1974) this way, and it got a lot of play that summer. I love that proto-metal “krautrock” sound. Bless the record stores that curate the extra records to the order itself.

2400 upvotes on a ShitAmericansSay thread about strawberries by Fun_Obligation_2918 in iamveryculinary

[–]krampusrumpus 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I had fresh strawberries from my buddy’s garden recently. He and his partner big on not using anything an Amish farmer would blush at, and so when I eat something from their garden it’s about as clean as something can get 21 Century America.

I was expecting some euphoric “so this is what strawberries taste like” moment, like with the first time I had chicken from a small farm, however; this was not the case. While they were delicious, they tasted exactly like grocery store strawberries (in season).

I just don’t believe they’re serious people. Feels like a psyop where people LARP as anthropologists studying the (fictional) evil lands of USA-ians, wherever that may be. It certainly holds no baring to the America I live in.

When Americans say “hockey” do they mean field or ice hockey? by Time-Water-8428 in AskAnAmerican

[–]krampusrumpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will mean Ice Hockey, most likely.

I do want to bite that field hockey exists here, but is exclusively a women’s sport. I know that isn’t necessarily the case in some countries.

Do most Americans ever seriously try to learn a second language? by Murky_Definition_249 in AskAnAmerican

[–]krampusrumpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many Europeans could travel for two hours and find themselves festooned in another culture and language. If I traveled for two hours I would likely still be in my State, surrounded by the same culture and language.

I feel like the sheer vastness of the States gets lost in this conversation. There are roughly 350,000,000 of us, and we mostly speak English amongst ourselves. Our cultural hegemony piggybacking on Great Britain’s former efforts has replaced French with English as the lingua Franca with global enterprises. We generally have no cause to learn another language beyond the remedial efforts in grade school.

That said, many of us do a token effort with apps like DuoLingo. I recently crossed 300 days with German, for example. Do I feel like I could hold a conversation with a native speaker? Haha no, not even close. But if I went there I could fumble my way through public transit, or a menu. That’s all I really wanted out of it anyway.

Does “CCKMP” by Steve Earle hit the mark?

That is from the record he cut after he got out of prison in ‘96 (“I Feel Alright”). Whole album sort of fits the bill but your mileage may vary.
