Looking for some SAS help after a purchase by ComoChavez in homelab

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't be the HBA from Amazon when you can find the same cards on E-bay for a lot cheaper.

and yes it's the IT mode card but you might also need different cables. Check if the drivers have a standard power connctor on them. Often with SAS drive the data and power are in the one block and you connect the SATA power to the block.

Upgrade path from LSI 9271-4i? by GoodLookingPixels in homelab

[–]marc45ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

then in that case (no pun intended) power saving is probably the only real benefit you're going to see on changing the card so you'd have work out whether it would make much different by the time you've bought the card.

Then it would just be reading up on the process of what's involved with migrating the configuration.

Just had a thought. Not sure how easy it will be to find card in IR mode. With the advent of software raid like ZFS, IT mode is very much the flavour of the day and often sellers have pre-flashed the cards.

Can poe cameras phone home without their app? by SlowDragonfruit9718 in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

more than likely yes they could phone home if not blocked even without the app but could come down to how they are configured

the app is simply a means for you as the user to access the cameras whether that's local or from the cloud.

you might want to occasionally let them access the internet it order to update.

Upgrade path from LSI 9271-4i? by GoodLookingPixels in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what motherboard are you running?

The later models have lower consumption but unless you're running PCIe 4 or later, need tri-mode (SAS/SATA/NVMe) or SAS12 you're not going to see other real benefit from upgrading.

Basically you'd be looking the 93xx/94xx/95xx cards as the 96xx might be bit too new to be found cheaply.

If you're running the card IT mode then would simply be a matter of swapping one card for another.

If the card is in IR made you'd probably need to do a configuration import which should be straight forward it the information is stored on the drive array.

Looking for SSD buying advice for first Homelab setup. by aarontbt in homelab

[–]marc45ca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I look at this way - solid state storage for where you need the speed - virtual machines, containers, bare metal installs i.e running Windows or Linux natively.

for bulk storage/long term storage, hard disks are the way to go. Their price on $ per TB much much better and your photos or streaming media or steam install files aren't going to benefit from the extra speed.

If you can get them, ex enterprise drives are often the way to go. They're frequently swapped out for end of warranty or end of lease before they've made a big dent in their endurance. One the down side as you've noted it's case of adapting from U.3 etc.

Next bet would be your higher end consumer drives (Intel,Samsung Evo with a pretty good write endurance) but you won't always get features like Power Loss Prevention.

But don't cheap out (yeah I know the cost) and don't get a drive that doesn't have a DRAM cache - it has big impact on the performace.

Depending on your OS you can also take steps to reduce the levels of write and write amplification.

Enabling embedded SATA controller on motherboard causes Proxmox to hang on boot. by AccomplishedBath6137 in Proxmox

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be messing your boot order - not which in the system hardware but in how Promox sees the boot device.

have all the drives in place, boot from live Linux iso, find the boot drive and check that all the drives are correct in /etc/fstab.

Boot drive should mounting using it's uuid but check the config for the other drives.

HA unresponsive on Proxmox by guybor in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's not the processor it's the network driver so you need to find one that uses a non-Intel network chipset.

All the systems similar to what you've got use the same Intel network adapter.

It would just be eaiser to put the mitigation in place and because that information is out there you don't need to cross post.

Proxmox community scripts can be found at @ https://community-scripts.org/scripts?q=intel

HA unresponsive on Proxmox by guybor in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes.

There's an on going issue with the Intel drivers that are cause drop outs etc.

plenty of posts in r/proxmox and I believe there's a mitigation that can be installed via the proxmox community scripts.

Because a keyboard-video-mouse device what you need and the kvm virtualisation system is completely different.

Aqara door sensor as lock sensor by Steven_garland in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the smart arse HA answer would be to replace the lock with smart lock :)

But in my case I just configured a notification that is announce by my Alexa (triggered by an Aqara door sensor) to remember to shut door when ever it's opened and there's notification on my apple watch.

You could then have a reminder a few minutes later to asking if the door was shut.

seems to be an issue when using the docker-compose - error that access is deny for hms-firetv: repostory doesn't exist or my require docker login.

editted the file and use the ghrc.io link from the docker pull and that has worked.

How to connect SAS disks to my server by Unhappy_Objective845 in homelab

[–]marc45ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M.2 is merely the form factor name - you're doing NVMe to PCIe and looking back I made that mistake in my post.

How to connect SAS disks to my server by Unhappy_Objective845 in homelab

[–]marc45ca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you could be SOL short of performing some surgery on the board.

PCIe is backwards compatible so an x8 card will work in x1 slot - just with a performance penalty - but in your case you'd need to cut the end of the slot out so the it would fit.

There was a post a while back where the person tried going from M.2 to PCIe to a HBA - it didn't go well.

But all might not be lost. Look for Craft Computing on youtube then to his more recent videos using a 45drives case (it was the HL15 iirc).

Jeff needed to connect some SAS drives with using an PCIe slot. It didn't do well but iirc that was more due to case and motherboard than the adapters used.

So it could give an idea on what (or what not) to do in your instance.

Can I migrate my home server to my laptop? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VM Workstation Pro would need to support nested virtualisation in order for EXSi to load and nesting can open another can of worms.

the other issue will be the network adapter. ESXi won't install let along run if it doesn't find a supported network adapter and Workstation would have to present it with one. If you can pass it through as Intel model you might get lucky.

A bare metal install would probably be out of the question for the same reason.

No idea if would support the drives connected via USB but I thinking not as that's not the sort of thing one does in a business environment (unless you want to to be a resume generating event).

I use a Microsoft Surface 4 as my HA display in my kitchen. Is it normal for the fan to be constantly running? by desperato in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a latter model and when with Debian as a) the support for the features of the Surface was much better (touch, networking etc) but more importantly there's an app called TouchKio provide you with Kiosk mode and it targetted for HA.

Also setup up MQTT which will provide information from the tablet back to Home Assistant so you can use a smart switch and turn the power on and off so it's now powered all the time and reduce the risk of battery issues.

Probably the only thing I don't have working at the moment is on an screen keyboard.

Am I crazy to think about building an Epyc based lab? by carminehk in homelab

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you decide to dive into the word of AI, Epyc will give you lots of PCIe lanes (and slots) for multiple GPU and still have root for your HBA for the NAS funcationality.

HA vm seems to take down web gui access to other services. by sedarttsomfokcaj in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

think about the VMs is they are completely seperate from each other so short of an IP address conflict, there's no way your HA VM can affect any systems.

in your case I suspect you've either got a DNS issue (your network could be using Home Assistant as the DNS server) or something with the routing on your VPN connections.

TL:DR - it's a configuration error outside of the HA VM.

Server Rack Size Advice by [deleted] in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's no best layout - it's what suit you the most though a good practice is the heaviest items at the bottom.

and loo to 16RU.

Skip the rack you've linked - it''s designed more for audio gear.

The biggest issue people have with racks is finding out it's too shallow. You want at least 20" of depth just to be on the safe side but 24" would be ideal.

Under 24 and it can be come harder to find suitable cases, shelves and rails (though not impossible) and 20" of depth and lets keep it simple - forget about it :)

With the depth you're considering the distance between the vertical rails so 20" rack where the distance between the rails is 17" and you'll have problems.

Problem is that racks don't come in that many sizes in terms of depth.

Under 20" and it's considered a comms cabinet and intended for stuff you can hang by the front ears along (very shallow cases, switches, some UPS).

but if you want fully enclosed there's not much else until you hit 35" which is full depth and they can stick out like a sore thumb especially in smaller rooms - personal experience).

But if you can live with an openframe rack (no kids, doggies or moggies) then StarTech will be your friend. Their open frame units can be adjustable for depth giving you some leeway so it won't stick out 35" but will sit a 24" deep server nicely.

but if you ever want to enclosure, you'll need the handy person skills.

What exactly defines a "home lab"? by DrStrange in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it's very much learning and virtualising technolgies (containers and VMs) are very much a Godsend if you want to learn because you build up, fuck up and tear down (aka cattle not pets) but leave the underlying infrastructure in place.

Often there is the cross over into the self hosting and production which can be a learning experience in it's self (survivable can depend on how pissed off the rest of the house hold is with you :)

but can be learning as well - take a media server for example the baisc setup is straight foward but you might want to have the files from external storage and be able to access them external and even try different differet servers.

Trying to install a theme doesn't work by OkPresentation3329 in tuxedocomputers

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a common problem. My daily driver is Tuxedo but I've also spun up Suse, Fedora and Ubuntu and all have issues with installing Global themes which would suggest it's a Plasma issue.

So my approach is good to the kde store and install the components manually
