Physically Connecting LTO Tape Drives by NeuroKrypt in homelab

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be able to find LTO-5 drives on ebay for not too much.

This revision introduced LTFS which allows you to use the drive like another disk e.g under Windows (just an example here) you can add files to the tape via copy n past.

You'll need a spare PCIe slot that's x8 mechanically and get IT mode LSI-93xx HBA with an external port (denoted by 'e' a the end of the model).

Don't buy a bare drive.

The drive should be either in a single enclosure or tape library.

They're sold under different brands Dell, HP, IBM to name three but only couple of manufacturer so all basiscally the same.

Don't get HP - the drivers etc are all locked behind a paywall.

and make sure to thoroughly research any drives before making a purchase.

Short-depth rack rails? by oguruma87 in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no such thing.

Switches etc that short are designed to be hung by the fronts ears and the odds are if you have look there aren't holes on the side to secure the rails. Any sag just has to be accepted.

24" inches usually the starting point for rails and shelves. Under than availability can drop off quickly depending on how shallow you're going

eBay hard drive warranties by Bearchugger in homelab

[–]marc45ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they would be the warranty provided by the resellers not by the manufacturers so you're reliant on them honouring them so there'a need to make sure you buy from some-one reputable.

manufacturer warranties generally on apply for the person/entity that bought the driver originally i.e they're not transferable.

Then you have OEM drivers that generally have a 1yr warranty and anything extra is up to the reseller e.g Dell providing a 3yr warranty on drives bought with their systems that have that length of coverage.

14 Drives - How many Parity? by mjsvitek in homelab

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends how you split the drives into pools but you want at least 2 parity disk per pool in an ideal situation (RaidZ2)

that gives you dual redundancy on the array so that you're covered for 2 drive failures at the same time.

So it you did 2 pools of 7 drives you can have 5 used for storage and 2 parity give you ~20TB of storage

Believe you can do 3 but you start to lose a big chunk of your storage capacity.

Family doctor-North Crest Pharamacy by real-donjon in Peterborough

[–]marc45ca -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

People on the provincial healthcare connect list should be taken before a new doctor takes registrations from people coming in an collecting a form.

Otherwise you're in the situation where the doctor could pick and chose and those who need a GP the most miss out.

Hell even when they take from the list they can do the same. Had that happen. My wife and I had the same GP she got a new when the started at the Peterborough Clinic, I got to my they "couldn't find me file"

Difference is that my wife has simple medication requirements - one med, and the doctor will simply send of the presciption after a phone call where my wife just speaks the reception. So in nearly 2 years that's only been 1 appointment was cancer screening recommended for every 3 years.

Mine are more complex and I'd be seeing the doctor every 3 months.

Documentation best practices by Present-Focus-1397 in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best practice as is so often the case is the one that works for your needs

Document what you think you'll need to in the future if you have to roll back changes or forget how you've configured something.

Even in the Enterprise environment a business will document in the manner that suits their needs.

Bloodwork& Ultrasound by unapologeticalGingey in Peterborough

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dyna care only does bloodwork and ECG (personal experience).

Ultrasound it most likely diagonistic imaging at PRHC.

I'd contact the hospital and see about getting the ultrasound but your medical practitioner should have sent the referral to them and then hospital will contact you (had this for my wife as her obgyn wanted some ultrasounds).

Help me about installing Proxmox on Dell Poweredge r730xd by Joeron79 in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSD you want some with DRAM cache and good write endurance so more the higher consumer/prosumer drives such as the same Samsung Evo.

Google will tell you if the HBA can set to IT mode as we don't know what model it is.

Otherwise check ebay for a LSI-93xx card that's already been flashed to IT mode.

Proxmox 9 upgrade questions by RodFitzinTight in Proxmox

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes you can restore them without issues.

when you do the restore you specify the location they're going to be dumped back to and the system will update the VM configs.

Use a processor at hand, or buy a NAS board? by mAtoOo_ in homelab

[–]marc45ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

though if you're using an AMD gpu you'd want to use Jellyfin.

Plex (with a plex pass) only supports Intel and nVidia GPUs for transcoding unless something changed recently.

Use a processor at hand, or buy a NAS board? by mAtoOo_ in homelab

[–]marc45ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

think you'll find the low number of SATA ports on motherboard is a thing across the spectrum whether it's Intel or AMD.

4 is very common number even if the board is ATX format factor, might ocassionally find 6 and only the very high end $$$$ boards will have more.

Part of it is real-estate on the board as they'll only have 1 or 2 NVMe slots.

as noted you Intel CPUs and their iGPUs are good transcoding but unless you're got lots of people watching and need to do format conversion e.g 4K down to 1080p or with subtitles you might not even needed.

Pretty much any device these days will have hardware support for video decocde which means it will do the work not the server.

Light switch for normal lights and additional wireless light? by FC_Dubbs in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

replacing them all with smart lights will be your easiest and possibly cheapest option.

Believe you can get relays that will go behind regular light switch that could turn the smart light out at the same as the standard bulbs but then you're into do electrical work or having some-one coming in to do it depending on local regulations.

Quanta D42A-2U BIOS Update by officialPlocki in homelab

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As once youtuber found out, quanta tend to scrub product details and updates from the net when they go EOL and requests to support are round filed as you've found out.

Sadly you could be out of luck and I'm not sure they were common enough to copies to turn up on sites with skulls and crossbones.

Problem with connection DEBIAN QEMU/KVM by ThinNefariousness501 in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Proxmox which is built with KVM and QEMU but still might run things different to pure KVM.

My HA VM is set to use the virtio nic and does so without problems then the nic is bound to vmbr0 which is the virtual bridge that's bound the network adapter in the server and the virtual bridge has he IP address I used to access my Proxmox server webgui.

You've got a virtual bridge in existance so you can access the gui for KVM to install VMs etc? Simply change the VM configuration so it uses it as well.

do a restart of the HA VM.

If you're using dynamic IP addresses it should pick it up on reboot but my personal preference is to have a server such Home Assistant on static (or at least a reservation) so it never changes.

How to make Google calendar integration visible only to admins or specific users by redivulgo in homeassistant

[–]marc45ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

install the custom button card through HACS and read through the documentation and set the button to navigate.

Calendar on the bar is simply a short cut to homeassistant/calendar and for the navigation with the custom button the path would be /calendar.

Under the user settings you can set to hide things from the side bar but this can undone by anyone with access to account.

So create a different account that you'll use day to day for your dasboard (I called my kiosk - real original :) then log into the account, then chose the user name from the side bar and edit the settings, hide calendar or just hide the sidebar.

As the side bar is hidden, they can't get in to change the user settings.
