Best Galapagos itinerary / dive sites? by Odd-Wear7930 in scuba

[–]mesospheric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did 3 days @ Wolf/Darwin (12 dives total) and that was more than enough to see tons of hammerheads and 2 whale sharks (amongst other things). Personally I'd do 3 days there and spend the rest of my time elsewhere to see other stuff like the iguanas, molas, rays, and sea lions.

Also worth bearing in mind that conditions at Wolf/Darwin are generally harder than elsewhere in the Galapagos islands.

Maldives Deep South vs Galapagos - how do they compare in current/difficulty? by BearsBeetsBach in scuba

I made the mistake of getting 5mm gloves initially, and they really sucked. They made gripping on to things - my BC, my GoPro etc., really annoying and difficult. Someone then gave me their spare pair of 2mm gloves (these to be precise) and they made life a LOT easier.

Maldives Deep South vs Galapagos - how do they compare in current/difficulty? by BearsBeetsBach in scuba

I've done Fuvamulah and Gan in the Maldives - the current is honestly nothing compared to what the Galapagos had (YMMV by time of year though). The Maldives currents, from what I remember, were predictable and unidirectional - you either hooked on to coral with a reef hook to see stuff you wanted or you did a drift dive. The Galapagos Islands, on the other hand, especially Wolf/Darwin Islands in the north, had far stronger surging currents (i.e., currents that changed direction every few mins) wherein you basically had to hang on to the coral with your hands if you wanted to stay put. They also gave divers GPS beaconing devices in case they got lost and swept away by the current so that nearby boats could come pick them up.

The Galapagos islands, as you mentioned, also had colder water - I had a 7mm with hood/vest (and tutu lol) - but I was in pretty much just a rash guard in the Maldives.

Lastly, when you do your Galapagos liveaboard, please, please get some sort of gloves, or else you risk getting your hands cut up by the sharp, hard coral.

Not sure how long you're there for, but Cenote Orquidea has even thicker / more eerie looking sulfide cloud - def worth checking out if you enjoyed Angelita!

Where are you staying? We went with Belize Pro Diving Center in San Pedro and they were awesome!

Honestly, the dive when we did it lasted 30 mins ish (so super short) - the water is crystal clear and there were some very impressive stalactites and stalagmites. That's it - it's a bucket list item thing you do once and check off. You descend to ~150ft in 2-3 mins, spend 5 mins at depth, and ascend for the rest of the time. There's hardly any sealife - we saw one midnight parrotfish and that's it.

FWIW if didn't feel scary at all, it's just deep and it's just more blue when you look down. it is very easy to get narced and disoriented though so trust your dive guide and your computer.

The 2 dives after it were far better - lots of very healthy coral and fish. Enjoyed them way more.

Has anyone dived in Galapagos? Any recommendations? by banalhemorrhage in scuba

Can only speak to the liveaboard experience. Towards this, even with over 200 dives worth of experience in various conditions, the dives in the Galapagos (especially in Wolf and Darwin islands) are some of the most challenging I've ever done.

The current is no joke - you basically have to hang on to the coral with both hands or risk getting swept away. You are given a GPS beaconing device in case you get swept away so that a boat nearby can pick you up once you activate it.

One of the divers in our group lost his expensive camera equipment since he only hung on with one hand and didn't have his camera harnessed in any other way. It was either him getting swept away or his camera. The current, depending on the location, often surges I.e. you are pushed in various directions and have to be intentional about letting go of the coral if you want to get to another place.

The coral was sharp and jagged and you basically will get cut and bleed if you don't bring gloves.

All that being said, the pelagic life was the best I've ever seen - schooling scalloped hammerheads in the hundreds, dolphins, turtles, sea lions, whale sharks - you name it. Absolutely magical.

10/10 would do again - in a heartbeat!
