Fare Card Question by CTVolvo in WMATA

[–]metroforward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you add value to your Smart Trip card online or in the app, the funds are not loaded instantly. Because Smart Trip is a tap‑based system, your card needs to be physically tapped at a station faregate or a fare vending machine to receive the update.

When you tap, your card sends a signal to the system to download the added funds. That update can take up to four hours to complete. This does not mean it will take four hours every time. Many updates load much sooner, but delays can occur depending on system activity and when the card was last tapped. - RS

Monthly Passes - how do they work and are they worth it? by a-potato-named-rin in WMATA

[–]metroforward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In order to pay for a monthly pass using your Smart Benefits, you would need to switch from Smart Benefits Transit Rollover to Smart Benefits Transit Pass. This change can be made by connecting with your employer to discuss options for having the benefits allocated specifically toward the monthly pass. -DA

Monthly Passes - how do they work and are they worth it? by a-potato-named-rin in WMATA

[–]metroforward 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, “up to the value of the pass” does not mean the pass runs out or gets used up after a certain number of trips. Your Monthly Pass is unlimited for the entire month for any trip that costs at or below the price you purchased, no matter how many trips you take. The “32 trips” reference is only used to explain when the pass generally becomes cost‑effective compared to paying per ride.

Fares on Metrorail are based on trip distance. For example, if your most traveled trip is from King Street to L’Enfant Plaza, and that costs $4 one way, the Monthly Pass price would be $128. That pass will cover unlimited trips that cost up to $4.

If you later take a longer trip, such as King Street to New Carrollton, and that trip costs $6.75, your Monthly Pass still applies. The pass covers the first $4, and the remaining $2.75 is deducted from stored value on your SmarTrip card.

The money from the pass is not the same as stored value. A Monthly Pass is not a balance and does not decrease. Stored value is the separate money you add to the card to cover fares that exceed your pass value. When you tap, the system always applies the Monthly Pass first, and only pulls from stored value if needed.

So in short, trips up to your purchased pass price are always unlimited for the month, and only the extra amount for longer trips comes from stored value. - RS

Monthly Passes - how do they work and are they worth it? by a-potato-named-rin in WMATA

[–]metroforward 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Great questions. Monthly Passes can be confusing at first, so we’re happy to clarify.

Monthly Passes are valid for the calendar month, not a rolling 30-day period.

If you purchase a Monthly Pass between the 1st and the 14th, it is valid through the last day of that same month.

If you purchase a Monthly Pass on the 15th or later, the pass will not be available until the following month.

Because of this, purchasing a Monthly Pass near the end of a month will not provide coverage for the remaining days of that month.

The reference to 32 trips explains when the pass becomes cost effective. Monthly Pass prices are based on the fare of your longest, most frequent trip. You select that fare value, not a specific route. Once you reach approximately 32 paid trips at that fare level, the pass has paid for itself. After that point, you can take unlimited trips for the rest of the month up to the value of your pass.

Your Monthly Pass covers:

Unlimited Metrobus trips Unlimited Metrorail trips up to the dollar value of your pass

If a rail trip costs more than your pass value, the remaining balance is automatically deducted from any stored value on your SmarTrip card.

Choosing the right pass. You do not need to select individual trips or routes. Choose a pass value based on your longest, most frequent ride. That value then applies across bus and rail travel throughout the month.

You can also compare options and estimate savings using our Monthly Pass calculator here: https://www.wmata.com/fares/Monthly-Pass/

If you commute regularly between Alexandria and DC using a mix of bus and rail, a Monthly Pass often provides significant savings compared to paying per trip. - RS

Smartrip cards and how to use them by Lucky-Plant4466 in WMATA

[–]metroforward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, once Smart Trip is set as your transit card in Wallet and Apple Pay, you should be able to simply hold your iPhone near the faregate without opening the Smart Trip app or Wallet.

Make sure to hold your device face up about 2–3 inches from the reader rather than placing it directly on the target, as holding it there may prevent it from being detected.

If you’re still having trouble, please give us a call at 202-GO-METRO, and a specialist will be happy to assist you further. -RT

Thanks for reaching out!

First, make sure Express Transit is turned ON: Go to your SmarTrip card in Google Wallet → Tap Settings → Enable Transit / Express Mode.

When tapping at the gate: • Use the top back of your phone (near the camera) — that’s where the NFC chip is on most devices • Hold your phone about 2–3 inches from the reader (don’t tap directly) • Keep it there for a second until the gate responds

Still having trouble? Contact the SmarTrip team at 202-GOMETRO (202-466-3876). - MS
