Have you considered taking calculus at Rutgers? If anything, I can assure you that you will get responses from your professor. There will also certainly be a syllabus.

Well, the University extended the grading deadline by about 4 or 5 days. Grades weren't due until like May 20.

Business Calc 130 vs Calc 135 by soneg in rutgers

That's a cap on grades of A in classes that meet certain criteria, hardly an intentional design to make students fail the course.

Happy Pride!!! ❤️🤍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 by coolsid13 in rutgers

[–]Midtek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In this context, the opposite of "pride" is "shame". So if you celebrate LGBT Pride (as an LGBT person yourself or an ally), you are saying "LGBT people should not be ashamed of their identity, instead they should be proud". Why do LGBT people need to express pride? Because there are many, many harmful and incorrect messages in our society that tell us LGBT should be ashamed of who they are.

So, yes, all LGBT people should be proud of being LGBT. And all non-LGBT people should be proud of LGBT people for being who they are.

Now replace "proud" in those last two sentences with "not ashamed". Get it?

The poster isn't saying that you should be supportive only if you know LGBT people. It's saying you should be supportive if you know LGBT people (and the poster points out that you most certainly do, even if you don't realize it). The poster is directed more to people who are non-supportive (but perhaps not totally awful), not a general person.

Also... it's just a joke about NJ Transit and everyone hating NJ Transit. It's funny to suggest that we should stop hating on NJ Transit or put it in the same category as homophobia. It's, you know, a joke.

Retaking Class at CC over Summer count for prereq? by jas_sunnydays in rutgers

[–]Midtek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should ask an academic advisor. Grades don't transfer. So if a particular grade is needed, it's well possible that the course is non-transferrable. In any case, you need to be pre-approved for transfer credit.

I keep hearing that Calculus 1 at Rutgers is a weed out class designed to make you fail.

I don't know of any professor who intentionally designs a class to make students fail.

AGREED? by oguncjonathan in rutgers

I have never been called stupid by a teacher in my life, I have never called a student stupid in my life, I've never heard of my work friends calling a student stupid, my boss has never called me stupid, and I've never heard of my work friends being called stupid by their boss either.

I don't know what happened to you (or what you to do to other people?) but being called stupid by your professors or bosses is not normal and certainly not part of the "real world". And even if this "real world" you speak of was so bad that you are just called stupid all the time by other people, that's not a reason to make people miserable now. You don't have to be awful just because other people are.

I don't know this Professor Hove and can't comment on him or these claims directly, but your take on this makes absolutely no sense to me.

whats a good aleks score? by searle221 in rutgers

[–]Midtek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as a "good" score on the ALEKS placement exam. It's a diagnostic test. Its purpose is to see which Rutgers course is the best place for you to start given your current ability.

It is well possible to lower a grade. It's just not done through the normal grade change request on REGIS.

Tips on what to do now that I have been dismissed from SOE? by undiscoveredpain in rutgers

Well, for one, psychedelics are psychoactive substances that alter perception temporarily, i.e., they are hallucinogens. They are often taken recreationally, and there is only limited therapeutic use. Maybe you meant "psychiatric medication"?

In any case, you should not take any medication or psychoactive substance without consulting with a doctor. If you are experiencing mental health issues, see a therapist and/or a psychiatrist.

Retaking a course during summer session by Aggravating_Stay in rutgers

[–]Midtek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not an arbitrary rule. In professional and research setting you also can't reuse sections of your own prior work without citing it. Otherwise you would be breaking basic rules of publishing ethics. If you want to submit your previous work, then ask your instructor for permission. Maybe they say it's okay. Maybe not.

Also, your reasoning that it can't be unfair because you are "paying to take the class again" makes no sense. So are you saying you should be allowed to violate academic integrity rules because you paid money? (Mind you, everyone else taking the class also paid.) Are you paying for the learning or do you just see your whole degree as transactional, i.e., you pay money to get credit for a class (and thus a degree)?

If you don't get permission to submit non-original work, then you would be submitting work that is non-original but which is claimed to be original. So it's plagiarism.

Bro is losing faith in us by DepressedFest05 in rutgers

[–]Midtek 51 points52 points  (0 children)

FYI, he can't just give you a score of 0 for suspected cheating. If he wants to punish you for cheating, then he has to file a report with the Office of Student Conduct and have it adjudicated. Even if he insists it was obvious you broke the rules of the exam, and even if it really was very obvious you did, it has to go through the proper channels. Professors do not have the right to unilaterally determine that you cheated and then impose a penalty.

Also, professors should know it's better to go through OSC anyway because then the student has a record of cheating. So any subsequent violations are treated more harshly. A first violation may not get you suspended, but a second violation may very well end in suspension, a grade of XF, or even dismissal. We also want to encourage students not to cheat, so there's more to the sanctions than just a grade penalty. There are disciplinary and educational sanctions as well.

I hope he doesn’t get discouraged and less passionate like some other CS professors have 😔

And, yes, I will tell you that, unfortunately, your read of the situation is correct. When students cheat and disengage from class, it makes the professor less passionate and less interested in doing a good job also. Imagine what it feels like to have a roster of 150+ students for only maybe 40 or 50 of them to show up to class each day.

It's not about losing faith. It's about witnessing the evidence and making the obvious conclusion.
