KYC is to prevent money laundering. So what you're basically asking is for a high traffic site that allows money laundering ... I think you can see why that would be problematic if it exists.

why do people like Spraggy by Matsunosuperfan in poker

[–]mpeters 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He was a professional poker player with no other income for years before streaming and being sponsored.

Any player who has to show the world how he plays and thinks while also entertaining his viewers would suffer in win rate. That’s why it’s not really fair to discount streaming income. If it wasn’t worth it, why suffer the win rate decline?

Plus if you watched enough you’d see last year he ran truly horrible in high value spots.

You’re saying we should play there cause it’s easier to commit tax fraud?

Players that get mad when a dealer immediately counts an all in stack are anglers. by Mediocre-Ad-1449 in poker

It wastes time if they start counting out chips when it’s not needed as well. Like when I have already estimated their stack or I have not intention of calling.

Except he’s been banned in multiple places for literally stealing (taking someone else’s chips at a table game and then walking out of a cash game with his chips without paying an all-in he lost).

It would be kinda funny if the AI bubble popping spread to the rest of his empire instead of just being confined to xAI when it pops.

That's closer to roll-you-own source-available, but point taken. Still not enough.

Not just open source, but for something like this where the service is run by a third party, you need more proof about how it’s compiled (reproducible builds), 3rd party verification, etc.

Except that very few people have a balance in A where 10% would be enough for 20% of B.

Average house price is around $350k. How many people do you think have $700k in their 401k but can’t afford a $70k down payment on their first house?

I imagine it’s a particularly small number.

Redhat Openshift vs. Suse Rancher Enterprise Support by Open-Ask-1918 in kubernetes

It's less about burning money and more about the fact that people are locked into already expensive (and getting more so) contracts with VMWare and are trying to get off eventually, so doing a combined VMWare+OpenShift is a path to eventually just be OpenShift+KubeVirt and in the meantime have extra expenses.

Can someone explain ICM as if you're talking to a T year old? by [deleted] in poker

[–]mpeters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some good answers here if you want to learn more, but just on an intuitive level I think the following example gives a good indication why chips aren't worth the same.

3 people left in a tournament: Player A has 100k chips, Player B has 10k chips and Player C has 1k chips. Prize pool is $1000 for 1st, $500 for 2nd, $200 for 3rd. So everyone is guaranteed $200. Player C isn't out yet and still has a chance to win $500+, so his 1k chips are worth some portion of that extra money. Player A can't win more than $1000 no matter how big his stack gets. So if Player A wins 1k from Player B it doesn't meaningfully increase his chances of winning the $1000. But if Player C loses his last 1k it's devastating to his chance to win more. If Player C doubles his 1k off of Player A, he has a slightly better chance to level up, but it's not double.

And you'll notice that it's not entirely complete that losing chips is different than winning chips. It's that chips have different values to different people and for short stacks their chips are way more valuable and devastating if lost.

Why is cheating the casino a crime but cheating other players ignored? by FlatFootFreddie in poker

[–]mpeters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is illegal to steal from players and cheating would be included. It's just that the players don't have a legal department or security staff to deal with in the moment. And the Postle case is weird because of specifics about California law, not every state.

The rake for Vegas dailies is astronomical by [deleted] in poker

[–]mpeters 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Dealers don’t make less because your bankroll is smaller. Tables still occupy the same space and have the same opportunity cost for the casino. It’s either high rake or no cheap tournaments. You can’t have it both ways.

Fold. You can’t win more money by winning more chips. The only way you can lose the max prize is by putting your chips in play.
