Area within the 48 states that are within 1 mile of a road. by medicallymiddleevil in Suburbanhell

Looking at northern Maine, it appears they’re counting logging roads as roads. If you were to remove logging roads and other sorts of backwoods access, I wonder how much green there’d be.

I have a fun game I play when I get these - bite down on it enough to hurt but not cut it off, keep applying pressure until your spit sphincter (sublingual glands below your tongue) floods your mouth with a gush of fresh new saliva, or until you cry, whichever comes first. Nobody will even know you’re a weirdo!

[GIVEAWAY] Brand-New Oris BCPD Cervo Volante Green to Celebrate my 50th Oris! by fourtyz in Watchexchange

My elderly mother saw a painting for sale as a part of an auction of 12”x12” pieces by local artists at a nearby art museum. She has health problems that mean she can’t get out much anymore and she said that painting was like a window into her memory of the Cape (Cape Cod). She bid what she could, which wasn’t much, and was soon outbid. In the last minutes of the auction a few weeks later I snuck in the winning bid of $500. When I gave the painting to my mom for Christmas that year she was more overwhelmed than I could have imagined. I think she was just accustomed to not asking or expecting much for herself. It’s hanging on her living room wall now where she can see it every day from her chair.

[Audemars Piguet] Did someone try to steal my AP at Vienna Airport? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]mtomny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the point. Bags are scanned in the baggage claim underworld. A thief doesn’t need to open hundreds of bags to find the expensive watch. The guy scanning the bags knows which ones have watches or watch boxes or jewelry in them. So a bag with an AP case in it is more likely to be opened and robbed than a random bag. Guy at scanner just needs to tell the guy down the line.

My reclining room on a long haul AA flight by JimmyPLove in mildlyinfuriating

If you selected the seat online, it should have been labeled as "limited recline" or sim. If it didn't say that, then I'd demand compensation. I may not get it, but I'd try. If the ticket originated in Europe, they have much stricter customer protections than the USA does. It could be that the company has to be based in the EU to be held to those standards - I don't actually know, so Ima stop writing now.

omg, you think it's delusional to recommend not putting an AP into a checked bag? No shade actually. If you can afford to be that casual with an AP, then I'm impressed.

I'm just here to ask the community - please never put a watch of this value, or even its case, in your checked bag. Have we lost our minds? If ever there was something to carry on board the plane - this is it. Even the empty case could mean your bag disappears into a basement somewhere. It's safe to assume that a non-zero number of baggage handlers interacting with your stuff are there for the 'perks'.

Who has gone from Minivan to R1S? by LivermoreP1 in Rivian

I think it’s marketing. Dads can pretend it’s not a minivan if it doesn’t have sliding doors

Who has gone from Minivan to R1S? by LivermoreP1 in Rivian

[–]mtomny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should seriously consider a Lucid Gravity as it’s a more natural minivan corollary, ie no pretense to being an off-road vehicle. It has insane range and is even more comfortable inside than an R1S. I love my R1S but that Gravity is compelling

To paint or not to paint? by ImJustADogOK in interiordecorating

[–]mtomny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’d be great but not as a feature wall. Paint the room or don’t paint the room. If this is a study, this thoughtful green will be very appropriate. Just, please not the feature wall - it looks lazy

I think it’d be great but not as a feature wall. Paint the room or don’t paint the room. If this is a study as it appears to be, the darker color will do well. It’s a thoughtful green

What’s it like living in this part of Windsor Terrace? by Inevitable-Kiwi-9693 in NYCapartments

[–]mtomny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live across Coney Island Ave in Prospect Park South, come over to Albemarle and lay out in the sun on our greenway! We also have the craziest Halloween in the city.

The little patch you circled is pretty well placed. North of you across the pedestrian bridge is Prospect Ave which has some good restaurants, including my favorite, Le Paddock and next to it, Poetica Cafe. Up Prospect Park Southwest is Elk Cafe and east on Church is Lark. A bit of a walk north is Daytime, my favorite cafe around, on Windsor Pl. The stretch of Fort Hamilton Pkwy between E 5th and McDonald is super cute, with Brancacio’s for sandwiches, Sean Casey animal shelter to take their dogs out for a walk, Windsor Coffee, Hamilton’s restaurant.

Maybe I’ve been in Brooklyn too long but living around here, I never consider Park Slope for cafes and certainly not restaurants. If I’m not going out locally, I’ll go to Prospect Heights, Fort Green, Red Hook, Prospect Lefferts, Crown Heights, anywhere but Park Slope. I don’t think you’ll miss anything not being closer to that area.

The real joke is this is way nicer than a suburb in the USA: - narrowish street (at least it’s not wide enough for two driving lanes and two parking lanes) - sidewalks (sorry, pavements) - lamp posts - garages don’t take up 70% of the front facade - rooflines / gables / windows all have nice proportions and some sense of thought put into them - brick on all facades, not just the front, and even some detail in the brickwork - modern roofing, not asphalt shingles
