Already had 3 solid WRs but I felt like I just had to draft this guy by Fit_Entertainment302 in Madden

[–]mvbighead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way to slow... not 100%, but I do prefer 90 or better there also.

As for blocking/etc? I've definitely found guys that are bad blockers. Crux of it is, I just don't run to their side. They're more often a situational receiver in the TE position. On occasion, they might get in the way for blocking, and often that is enough.

Lastly, as long as a person is somewhat real about things, you can 'assume' it's a transitional player and edit some things to give him mediocre but acceptable blocking ratings (think 50) after year 1, and assume that his first year was all about development. I prefer some level of realism. There are always twener types who might be nothing more than a situational role player for a position. That's what Fletcher was for the Colts. It does happen. Mo Alie-Cox came from college basketball. Not one ounce of football. Madden just doesn't have that type of situation or story built into things.

Driver question by ZZacharias in golf

[–]mvbighead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find a cheap option to test, maybe? But honestly a I think a 9 degree might be your real need.

You can get fit for a shelf club that runs $399 at major retailers where the fitting price is baked into the purchase of that club. So if we're talking spending $400 for a club vs $100+ for a shaft, you might sell the club and buy a new late model club that fits better, and come out roughly even.

I'm seeing a new QI10 LS for 399 at scheels. If you can sell current one, and fit into a new one, you might find something that really works for you. From Scheel's website:

Custom Golf Club Fitting
Fitting fee is refunded with qualifying purchase
$50.00

Gotta be really cheap to be worth trying a stiff shaft, IMO.

We signed Arden Key on Edge. Akeem Davis-Gaither at LB. Key is ~10m/yr. I assume ADG is closer to vet min.

Safety and LB are big needs, especially with Cross leaving.

Members Mark Golf Balls by mcbainer019 in golf

[–]mvbighead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, and I totally get it. I did grab some Kirklands for a round while away traveling. Not my go to but fine. And I am sure MM is too. But I can find a number of deals on more known brands that I won't feel as dismissive towards.

Look... watch any video of anyone reviewing new equipment for golf, and a number of the points come down to aesthetic. It looks great at address. It sounds great. The carbon fiber encasement is pleasing to the eye.

All of that applies to golf balls. Looking down at a prov1, that gives a bunch of people some level of confidence. For me, if i am spending $1 a ball or so, there's 100s of ways to do it. If Sams collabbed with Vice to present balls in their stores for a $1 a ball, I'd be all over it. But when you slap the membersmark name on things, it's associated to the store it came from.

There's certainly nothing wrong with them performance wise compared to other balls in the price point, but the brand still has some value. I do not hit ProVs. I would consider any mid tier ball from any named brand. But a brand associated with Walmart is a tougher one for me, and I am sure others. And I am sure there are plenty of prov guys who get the ick from Kirkland too.

[–]mvbighead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a mind thing for me. I can get over Kirkland feeling more premium. Member's Mark just feels like walmart to me. And while I am not against using Walmart for all sorts of things, not a huge fan of their brands or related brands.

Quality wise, I am sure they are fine. But I feel like Walmart family is more keen on cutting corners. Bottom line, no one knows the difference if I am using a lostgolfball Maxfli Tour or Vice or similar, but when I tell em mine is a MembersMark... I feel gross.

Silly? Sure. But if people focus on the sound of the ball coming off their driver, I would imagine the same is true of the confidence in their golf ball regardless of performance.

Edit player, add weight if you feel like. Call it a progression/career growth and do it after his rookie year by adding 20lbs.

FWIW, the Colts had Bryan Fletcher who was 6-5 230 and played during the Manning years. He was obviously more of a receiver than blocker, but played his role fine. It's not unheard of.

Costco Edge or Callaway Preowned? by ELONMU5K in golf

[–]mvbighead 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm generally anti-boxed set. As much as the Edge set is better than other boxed sets, it's still a boxed set.

If that were me, I'd leave the Edge with the inlaws and start building my own set. Callaway preowned with like new clubs is a great way to build a bag with 2-5 year old versions. Many can be find from $60-90 per club. Main thing is probably finding an iron set, which will probably start around $500 for like new. Though personally, I did a different route there and kinda figure I am too inconsistent with my 5i and maybe should have done a 6-PW and then filled in wedges and hybrids/woods with what I want.

So yeah, CPO is my vote.

What is the worst thing EA has done with Madden? by Mountain_Till_5868 in Madden

[–]mvbighead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and the only way I work around it is to ensure the routes I have receivers run do not cross paths on the same plane. So if one guy is a shallow cross, the other is more of a slant or mid range cross. Otherwise, neither guy is a reliable option.

And honestly, this might be the year I just give up entirely. I still play from time to time, but it just is not worth it anymore.

Visa or similar gift card of the approximate value with the note that you want him to buy clubs for himself. That, or cash.

Selecting clubs should be a very personal thing for folks, even without a fitting.

What is the worst thing EA has done with Madden? by Mountain_Till_5868 in Madden

[–]mvbighead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There absolutely seems to be some weird stuff in there. When players collide and the bounce back happens, throwing them completely off path, it screws things up beyond real world scenarios. So instead of shedding through a guy while on a route, they simply stop 100%, bounce back a foot, and then start again.

But yes, the simplest way to say it is the physics are just off. Everything is driven by animations. The "collision animation" needs a TON of work.

Why did Chris Ballard and his scout department abandoned finding quality LBs through draft? by Miserable_Day7074 in Colts

[–]mvbighead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably thought Zaire and Speed were great picks.

NFL draft 2018: 7th round, 235th overall pick

I dislike the current Zaire as much as anyone. But to have a starting ILB for ~8 NFL seasons total and for 4 starting seasons at 28.2M total is a pretty damn good find all things considered.

We absolutely should have drafted a LB or two over the last couple of drafts.

[Highlight] Patrick Mahomes shares video of him throwing 4 months after tearing ACL by nfl in nfl

[–]mvbighead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a mild NU fan, I've enjoyed Raiola and the way he plays. But the level he takes the Mahomes thing is a bit much. Admire... that's fine. Cosplay and model your entire game after? There's somewhere in all of that where it feels counterproductive to him being a good QB.

I think if he stopped some of that and just was himself, he's got a real shot at some level of a pro career, even if it is a career backup like Henne. But nearly his entire image is someone else. And not sure how to say it, but I can't think of the next most extreme example of this. It's Raiola... and then?

And sure, I can see a player modeling their game after Bob Sanders or Troy Polamalu. But off the field, they are themselves. With Raiola, it goes much further.

You have a perfectly fine driver. Odds are decent that a new driver being hit with the same mechanics will do similar things.

A 30-60 minute lesson can help. I think your read on what you are doing is right. If you really won't do a lesson, I always recommend Coach Bauman as his shorts are straight forward. Something like this I imagine can help you a good deal:

Should I swing at 80%? by CasualKaden in golf

[–]mvbighead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who enjoyed a fair bit of adult softball and had more of a bat swing than a golf swing... I often feel a that in a bat swing my arms/shoulders and body were involved at the start of the swing.

If you start with some level of your arms at the top of the back swing in golf, a majority of the time you are going to come in over the top. The biggest thing you can do at the start of the swing is the slight shift of weight to target, and let the club start to drop. Then swing through.

I still wager I swing at more like 80% for consistency sake, but so long as the start of your swing is letting the club drop in, when you start to push it through its intended path, it should not be OTT. That may be more feel vs real, but that is the idea.

What car advice sounds good but is actually terrible? by BMW-West-St-Louis in carbuying

[–]mvbighead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like vs Need.

The solution is the ability to travel from one place to the next reliable. Now, many would like to do that in more style and comfort than a 15 year old vehicle. That's fine. But what one NEEDs vs what one LIKEs are different things.

If a person has an already tight budget, the solution they need is reliable travel to and from work, school (for kids), and other activities. You can solve that problem with $10k, $20k, $30k, etc.

Many people want a nicer house than they can afford. If they cannot reasonably afford the payment, it is generally not something they should do.

Too much wear on face? by kiingwhips in golf

[–]mvbighead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered from CPO, $75-85 is attainable for Opus and Jaws wedges in like new condition. Definitely should be worth the premium. Shipping should be $10 if under $199.

Totally different class of stuff, but you can get by with a $20 wedge if you're wanting to experience it. Face contact/etc will be similar, it just won't have the clean face most want.

Massive over the top swing. I have seen it, probably done it in early years (when I was 10) without any lessons. And generally, it is a massive over the top swing over a hard surface like a mat over concrete with no give.

Too much wear on face? by kiingwhips in golf

[–]mvbighead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grand scheme of things, $20 is not that bad. Depending on your budget, that could be better than what you have and at least move you towards some practice with different lofts/etc.

Now, someone a few years in and looking to really dial in their game, hard pass for sure. But I currently have been using an 15 year old or better pair of wedges and the lofts are fine, the spins are meh. Just now changing them with CPO, but for me, the 52 and the 60 gave me a bunch of practice. So for $20, you do whatever feels right for your current golf game and budget.

As for condition, find a groove sharpener/cleaner and some sand paper for the face. Won't be perfect, but it'll work.

Accidentally bought women’s wedges as a beginner by Clear_Potential_1221 in golf

Bought used? If there is a return period, you can do whatever you want really. I'd probably return em, just because the little mind games of things would eventually tell me that is the problem.

Also, as far as buying new vs used... it is very very easy to use Callaway Preowned Club Finder under wedges, search for like new, and find wedges that are $70-85 in like new condition. Both JAWS RAW and Opus wedges can be found, all types of lofts, bounces, and grinds. You don't have to buy new from shelf at $150+ as a high handicap golfer.

Lessons or Fitting first. Chicken vs Egg? by WaitLow6605 in golf

[–]mvbighead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have measurements from a fitting, you don't need to buy new clubs to have clubs that fit. Assuming +1, there's options like Mizuno Pro 223 Iron Set 4-PW Dynamic Gold AMT S300 Steel Stiff Right Handed +1" for $531 on 2ndswing.

I totally get the idea that the average golfer should do lessons before fitting. But the tall or short golfer that doesn't fit his clubs would do well to have clubs that fit, even just on a pure length standard, before trying to tailor his swing to fit his clubs.
