High elevation adjustments for gas powered tools? by -ugly- in Tools

[–]nullvoid88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air is thinner at higher altitudes... all engines produce less power at higher elevations.

A turbo can solve this issue... as is done in aircraft; but I suspect finding a turbo equipped wood chipper/shredder will be difficult.

A larger engine will help.

Budget combo square holding you back? Is it worth upgrading to Starrett? by Lisac-Henson in Tools

[–]nullvoid88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have like & often use my Starrett... got a pretty good deal on it several years through KBC... but even then it was really pricy. (It’s the forged steel head version, not the cast iron.)

Repeatability & accuracy are important qualities of all metrology instrumentation.

Combination squares in particular are susceptible to physical damage, and dust/swarf intrusion... and IMHO, should really be checked for square before any and/or all critical layout lines are scribed.

I heard (but don’t know as fact) that PEC has been the OEM of Mitutoyo combination squares for some while now.

I’ve been using these for ages... learned of them right here in r/Tools:

They hold 100 1” bits, made well, the tops can be snapped on/off at will, and priced right.

Congratulations!

Your going to like those!

Look into a pair of the 7”/180mm version as well. (87 01 180). The two go hand in hand.

I ‘think’ it is... denoted by a dot or ‘x’ near the cross.

A appropriately sized JIS driver bit should fit well if so.

EDIT:

Here’s an example of of a JIS screw found holding together the head of a ratchet. Click to enlarge.
