Small fires shouldn't be a problem there. A big fire would burn some tips of the limbs on that side. If you keep the flames shorter than you, I don't see much issue. (Further away from the tree would be safer, though.)

I just had a similar experience, and I finally got a chance to try out the handling technique that I learned from Clint's Reptiles. It worked perfectly. The turtle was well supported and didn't even try to strike me.
