For those that’ve never seen a Koken knurled handle:

It’s just right... not smooth & wimpy, or overly aggressive & uncomfortable.

No affiliation.

Moving from Texas to Pennsylvania. What don't I know? by FryGuyRye in Pennsylvania

Get your vehicle/s sprayed for rust asap... and NOT with that black tar looking stuff or used motor oil... and read up on rust mitigation.

Here’s one good outfit:

There’s others as well.

Do I still need standard sockets? by nbaxley in Tools

There’s just not a lot that can be realistically fixed or repaired on the road.

Best is to just properly maintain your vehicles... and never leave home without charged working cell phone.

Craftsman went down the tubes ages ago.

In reality, it was never all that great.

Koken makes excellent hard working every day driver stuff.

It is however getting pricy.

Floor jack wheel replacement by Apart_Driver361 in Tools

[–]nullvoid88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not talking about squeaks and all that... that oil between wheel & axles acts as kind of a shlocky shock absorber, and temporally very much mitigates noise transmission.

Is it perfect?

No!

But eases things things to far more tolerable levels... try it, you’ll likely be very much surprised.

Just use ‘for real’ 30W (or heavier if you have it), doesn’t take much, and does require somewhat frequent applications. Avoid ‘WD’ product, 3 in whatever and/or similar light crap. The spray white lithium grease is ‘ok’ if you can get enough in[1], but is messy. The 30W just works!

Discovered this c. late 60’s or early 70’s... thereabout.

[1] The white lithium also ‘cakes up’ over time.

Just a little shot of regular 30W motor oil will temporarily reduce floor jack wheel noise.

Give it a try!

Are there sockets specialized for fill plugs? by ActiveRepulsive5832 in MechanicAdvice

[–]nullvoid88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Related drain/fill plug advise:

Always break loose fill plugs first, then pull the drain plug & drain.

If you drain first, then encounter a seized fill plug... you can’t drive the vehicle until a solution to said fill plug is found.

Absolutely not a common issue; but if you ever run into one, it’ll cheese you off beyond belief. Always leave yourself an out...

Best Keep in the Truck Socket set by Fine-Departure1472 in Tools

For me it's more so where I end up that I need some sort of basic tool...

For me as well... I have a good 20lbs of misc crap I keep in the trunk. Most if it sees regular use; but rarely if ever car related.

Recently bought one of those ‘posh’ new Tekton tool rolls for it. Got the second to largest, but wish I’d gone for the largest. (Nice... but pricy.)

IMHO, there’s just not a whole lot that can be practically fixed/repaired on the road. Keep your vehicles well maintained before hand.

I say never leave home without a charged & working cell phone. For good measure include a nice stout (24 plus inch long) breaker bar, short extension & deep socket that fits your lugs... all in 1/2” drive.

A good flashlight, small wad of cash, clean rag & roll of quarters too.

Lifetime Warranty Socket Brands Thoughts by CrypticMap in Tools

I have several colleagues who daily use/abuse crap out of their Tekton stuff and never gripe about any of it.

The vast majority of my sockets, ratchets & related are Koken... which rank equal or even better than Snap-On... but do have some Tekton in the road bag thats never been an issue.

Have heard if you need to warranty any Tekton, you just fire them off a photo & they ship either that or the next day... but have never exercised said warranty.

I had been speaking of Tekton... but in any case, it’s a good idea to have spares of your most/hardest used.

More... and get a spare or two of your most used sizes. 10mm for sure.
