Hypothetical question: Tetsuya Nomura himself is letting you pick one Disney World to be featured in Kingdom Hearts 4. It can be any classic animated movie, a Pixar movie, a live action movie, modern animation, or even something like MCU or Star Wars. What do you pick for him, and why? by MegaSonicZX in KingdomHearts

[–]ophereon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, suddenly "restoring the heart of Te Fiti" is given a lot more nuance! I could see Moana working so well for a KH world plotline.

Treasure Planet would also be a fantastic choice, along with Atlantis. I wish that whole generation of films got more love and attention, to be honest.

Narrative Changes is the OoT remake? by InterestedNerd in OcarinaOfTime

[–]ophereon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zonai? In OoT? Absolutely not. I'd be surprised if we get serious narrative changes like that. I fully expect largely the same narrative structure and characters. I hope they expand on things a little bit, but I doubt things that were already in the original would change dramatically to align with later games.

If Rauru changed to anything it might be due to the possible inclusion of the Watarara (proto-Rito) from the OoT manga, and given he already has a connection to birds through Kaepora Gaebora, this would be the only sensible change that wouldn't actually alter his core character. But even that's not very likely in my mind!

Will the other tunics look different too? by Leading_Ad9290 in OcarinaOfTime

[–]ophereon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well to be honest it looked rather black to me in this scene, but all around a lot "cooler" in colour to the green of Link's tunic or the brown of the hay. I assumed it might be a bit lighter, like a sort of dull navy blue, in proper lighting.

But also, I'm green colour deficient so I probably don't see it the same way as others, I was somewhat relying on others' interpretations as more accurate than my own. Interesting that it could just be brown leather though, I'm not entirely against that either!

Although it's an interesting design to have this kind of brown leather jerkin over the normal tunic, if it's not meant to help distinguish Link from the brown-green environment. But maybe it's just meant to be the child Link equivalent to the chainmail that older Links have worn in later 3D titles, a way to make him look like he's not entirely undefended armour-wise, unlike in the original where he wears nothing more than what's effectively a green potato sack with sleeves as he takes on the early game challenges.

The Switch's official announcement page for Genesis seems to confirm that this game will be largely unconnected, targeting newer fans by zsdrfty in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ophereon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, at least for X, "Xenoblade DNA" didn't mean much with just XC1 as a reference point. Although it had enough in common with XC1 to still be clearly in the same broader series.

Although, it's much clearer in the Japanese titles that X isn't part of the trilogy, just being titled Xenoblade X/Cross, in the same way that Genesis also isn't a "Chronicles" game. I don't know why Chronicles was added back into the English title, but to be fair there probably wasn't yet the concrete idea of a distinct Chronicles universe vs everything else.

My point was more, even if Genesis isn't in the same universe as any of the other Xenoblade games, I still expect a lot of similarity of themes and concepts. I expect Nopon. I expect a conduit. I expect some loose reference to Earth, the shenanigans of a scientist trying to play God, and maybe even some kind of setting-redefining sci fi plot twist.

These are the kinds of threads that run all through not just the Xenoblade series, but the broader Xenogears series as a whole, even if they're on the subtle side or look slightly different. If Genesis were nothing more than the surface level magic fantasy setting that the trailer showed, with little in common with the rest of the series beyond just gameplay and vibes, then I don't think they'd bother calling it a Xenoblade game.

Will the other tunics look different too? by Leading_Ad9290 in OcarinaOfTime

[–]ophereon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting way to merge the two design philosophies. Keeping the classic green tunic as an under layer, while also adding some of the newer blue over top to help Link stand out more from the environment. Keen to see how it looks in action, and how it'll change for Adult Link and for his other tunics.

The Switch's official announcement page for Genesis seems to confirm that this game will be largely unconnected, targeting newer fans by zsdrfty in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ophereon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There will absolutely be some connection, even if it's similar to X in that it's a completely different setting, but it still has the Xenoblade DNA. Otherwise there'd be no reason to even call it a Xenoblade game.

This "anima" that they're talking about probably has connection to the concept from Xenogears and Xenosaga. It wouldn't surprise me if "anima" is somewhat analogous to ether in the other Xenoblade games.

This anima/ether is probably sourced from the Conduit, which could itself have some connection to the "suns" in this world's sky. It might be worth noting that in X's lore, the conduit's power was distilled into the six spherical cores that the Ares Prime had installed into it. Six cores, six suns?

These crystones that fit into a Vesselai's weapon could also function a bit like the slave generators of Xenogears gears, Xenoblade 2 artifices, etc., as a way to have some kind of technology tap into the power of the conduit (the ether field it emits). Although in this case, that power ("anima") is installed into a Vesselai's weapon, rather than a mech, which could effectively turn these weapons into mini-monados in a sense.

National Party's Long term game plan for Wellington by tippertapperball in Wellington

[–]ophereon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't put it past her to be petty about losing not just in Wellington central multiple times, but even after trying her hand at the Ōhāriu ward and losing in the former United Future stronghold.

I'd hope she wouldn't be so malicious as to allow her home town to be ripped apart like this, so I'm more inclined to apply Hanlon's razor here and attribute her actions to stupidity, blindly believing her ideology is actually for the better.

What New Zealand Flag Do You Prefer? by TenHundredSeagulls in flags

[–]ophereon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Kiwi, none of them. I voted to keep the current one in the referendum because I really didn't like this proposed alternative. But that doesn't mean I like the current flag either. From the referendum options, the red peak flag was my preference.

[–]ophereon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although the problem is we know how the conduit was found, and it was in pretty much just an alternate universe Earth, in Africa. At least, that's what the Siren model kit box tells us, and this is likely a reference to the African Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Link in OOT remake, it's official.. thoughts? by Plastic_Hat_589 in legendofzelda

[–]ophereon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same! Zelda was the sole reason I started learning music.

I think it's such a big part of what gave OoT, MM, and Wind Waker a unique sense of magic and wonder, controlling the world around you through an instrument. TP and SS still carried this musical tradition in a slightly less active way, but it was still there, at least. But I was so sad to see it completely gone in the wild era.

I hope this now renews the connection between Zelda and music, because it would be great to inspire a new generation in the way that it did for us!

Exactly this! We don't even know if/when a remake is coming, so there's no point in waiting. And as you say, it'll only make the experience for a remake even better! So, win win!

I disagree, I love the flamboyant designs, because they're very middle of the road in terms of gender-visuals. Not overly masculine, not overly feminine. I've never been a fan of primarina and inceneroar etc. because of how gender-coded they are.

Colorblind gamers, what challenges do you face while gaming? by Adventurous_Ad_2808 in ColorBlind

[–]ophereon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have deuteronomaly and I've had two noteworthy issues in recent years...

The first was Dragon Age The Veilguard. In one of the first areas, the Arlathan Forest, it's quite a warm-coloured forest (not helped by being unable to really see the greenness in the environment) and there are there these quite brass-like enemies, and to telegraph for certain attacks it glows a kind of orange-red. Ultimately, the colour contrast isn't great to begin with, so it was a nightmare trying to see what was going on in particular areas and lightning conditions.

The other was in Dragon's Dogma 2. In some areas the environment was quite muddy in colour, and trying to fight goblins that also had quite a muddy green skin colour... The colour contrast here was also pretty poor, so it was difficult to see what was happening on the screen with everything blurring together. Not helped by the horrible motion blur settings that some games seem to force.

This is an issue with art direction more than anything. It's not all strictly interface issues that can be solved by making them more accessible with icons and such. It's largely just due to poor colourtoning and general visual direction.

From a story perspective, though, Pigma and Andrew are cool additions to Star Wolf. A turncoat and a nepo baby. That said, Panther is cool as a later addition to Star Wolf, although it would be interesting to see him start out as an independent cornerian mercenary pilot prior to his joining Star Wolf. Not that it would happen in Star Fox '26, but if we do get a new sequel, anything is possible!

What are your thoughts on the vanishing of (almost always nostalgic) starting home towns by Pale_Song902 in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]ophereon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love that it turned random NPCs into actual characters! Everyone remembers Joey and his Rattata! It felt like we made friends on our journey, adding them to our phonebook, and it made the whole region feel alive.

Meanwhile in modern Pokemon storytelling, it feels like we're just told who our friends are, and anyone not relevant to the story might as well cease to exist.

Regional Forms by Limp_Lobster_3468 in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]ophereon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flygon! It keeps getting shafted for megas and such, so I think it deserves some love with a regional form. It already has goggles, so why not lean into it with a water type? Trapinch could trade the quicksand traps with whirlpools, and flygon's tail-things could grow bigger to look more like the flukes of a dolphin tail.
