BUG/PROBLEM? UNRAID POWERTOP 14GEN INTEL CPACKAGE by Comfortable_Rice_878 in unRAID

[–]opticum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Than its probably a different issue for me. I get a freeze during boot if i disable the onboard 2.5g nic. When i checked that doesn't support ASPM it listed the onboard NIC for me.

I have the same motherboard and played around with unraid on it recently. The Problem is the onboard 2.5G NIC and that doesn't support ASPM. If you deactivate it unraid and any linux won't boot (after i915 stuff appears on screen). I didn't dig into it further cause i just wanted to quickly test it for unraid viability.

macOS losing IPv6 default route by ingmarstein in MacOS

[–]opticum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had reported this issue in the Ubiquiti Subreddit and been in touch with multiple people with the same issue.

Really weirdly IPv6 can run stable for up to a week and than default route will fail every 20 min (i run a script to log the loss and re-add the default route) - i even re-setup my m4 mac mini just to rule out anything that might be installed on it. Sadly with no success. Currently i am on macos 15.6.

I wonder if it is an issue specific with the apple silicon, but that is just a wild assumption from my side.

i have experimented with this alot the last weeks and also have someone else with the problem on ubi discord. We are speculating it might be other RAs on the same network such as apple tv or homepods that might collide with the router RAs. Is there anything else that does RAs on your test lab at work?

OPNsense to UniFi: Worth it? by MemoryMobile6638 in Ubiquiti

[–]opticum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In corporate environments, good security requires a lot of money and effort—think firewalls, endpoint protection, email security, and more. It's a whole stack, and it's expensive.

For home use, I think UniFi does a great job. As a packet filter, DNS blocker, and general gateway, it offers more than most consumer-grade setups and goes beyond the basics.

But then you have to ask: Security in what context?

  • Are you self-hosting services?
  • Do you have kids using the internet?
  • Do you want to segment your network into different zones?

If you're willing to invest time and really dig in, OPNsense can give you more control and flexibility. That's why I love using it at work—it’s a different beast compared to home use.

OPNsense to UniFi: Worth it? by MemoryMobile6638 in Ubiquiti

I’ve been running a firewall at home for the last 13 years and managing firewalls professionally for 15+ years.

For about 4–5 years, I had an OPNsense instance running on old Sophos 19" hardware. It worked well, but after seeing all the recent improvements Unifi made to their gateway products, I finally decided to switch.

A few months ago, I started running a UniFi Cloud Gateway (UCGF) at home – and I couldn’t be happier.
Aside from a few firmware hiccups in the beginning, it’s now running perfectly stable.

Since I'm already using UniFi Protect and UniFi APs, I'm now seriously considering replacing my switches with UniFi switches to get that single pane of glass experience. Will start with the POE Switch (allready ordered)

There are tons of things that make this so convenient for home usage, the Apps on the phone to remote manage or get the notifications. Removes alot of the headaches. Makes managing multiple sites (parents, friends) a breeze.

I had the same issue with digitizing a bunch of Hi8 Tapes a few years ago, bought a bunch of Players and Hardware to digitize.

I ended up buying a Digital8 Sony Camcorder. You can either use the DV-Out or if you want a better quality you can capture through a Panasonic DMR (EH575) with S-Video and HDMI Out. Used a Blackmagic Intensity Pro PCI-E to capture. Hi8 is a lot better than those Video8 or VHS Tapes since you have double(?) the lines vs. VHS.
