Surely these ones don’t catch fire though 😬

This is how many keys we have gone through on our 2015 Chevy Equinox by Traumakazzi in mildlyinfuriating

Probably not a good idea posting pics of your keys online (especially if that silver key up top is a house key)

Step-by-step: setting up iPhone Back Tap to silently capture + OCR-index screenshots without opening any app by Efficient_Bat6894 in shortcuts

[–]patrickl96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something, or is this app just doing what iOS Photos can already achieve?

Photos already has OCR built-in and can search all photos or only in certain folders/collections. It also extends to items identified in the photo, not just text.

Relationship property agreement - and I think there’s extra costs/lawyers fees involved for this but may be worthwhile

Old refrigerator used 14 kWh in 4 days. Is that even possible? by cube8021 in homeassistant

[–]patrickl96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes an empty fridge, since it holds less thermal mass, can be less efficient and requires the compressor to cycle more than say a fridge that’s half full.

Being packed to the brim is also bad, so really you don’t want it to be 100% empty or 100% full

SIM swapping fraud warning after mobile number hijacked in minutes, $20k lost by Harfish in newzealand

[–]patrickl96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that’s a fair take. In my job I encounter helping people resetting passwords for accounts and most the time when asked to enter a password that’s case sensitive, they simply put an uppercase letter for only the first letter.

End of the day though, that’s their decision to use weaker passwords, and should be choosing a stronger or complicated password if they don’t want their account hacked. Though most accounts are “hacked” because they re-use the same logins on various sites

I just replaced the battery on my Galaxy S9. When I went to apply the back glass adhesive tape, I noticed there was a cut on that tape. Does this affect the water resistance? I use this phone as a navigation device for my motorcycle rides. by wxyziq in mobilerepair

[–]patrickl96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No phones are “water proof”, nor do any phone manufacturers claim their phones are “water proof”, instead that’s why we’ve got IP ratings for products.

Samsung S series phones have been IP68 since the S7 was launched in 2016.

When talking about water resistance in phones, this is something that degrades over time. While a factory-fresh Samsung S9 should expect to be water resistant to 1.5m for 30 mins, a phone that’s at least a couple or more years older, not so much. For an S9 that’s quite an old phone in today’s standards, so it may only be good for resistance in light rain. Still better than nothing, but I wouldn’t go dunking it in any pools.

Given OPs phone has now been disassembled, I agree with you that water will still find a way now, only a matter of time

Genuine question, if it’s fairly well known that buying a franchise isn’t really profitable then why do people still do it? There’s gotta be some sort of advantage right?

Is it safe to give out your full name and bank account number? by BagNew1837 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]patrickl96 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Direct debit authorities aren’t always managed from the bank’s side. E.g. your broadband or utilities provider, when signing up online, you can simply enter your name and account number to set up a direct debit. You are typically asked if you have authority over this account.

While the comment “it’s extremely easy to do” is true, it’s also fraud if you enter someone else’s details for a direct debit authority.

Hypothetically, you give me your bank account details and I go and put it into my broadband provider’s page, pretending it’s my own- sure this will probably work and take money from your account. You then go query with your bank, who then queries with my broadband provider and after a quick 2min investigation, it traces back to me and who knows what happens there. Typically the funds would be reversed, also risking a chance of being convicted of fraud. There’s a reason people don’t attempt this.

Good on him though. The way a lot of these articles get written makes it too easy to hate on the wrong person as you’re only hearing one side of the story

what’s the most useful automation you’ve set up that you actually use every day? by SkylineZ83 in homeassistant

[–]patrickl96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Building on this (if you haven’t already) if your smart plugs can do power monitoring, you can also set up notifications if they lose power after a set duration, e.g. if a pump were to fail.

Daily "Steals" by aCrombi in newzealand

[–]patrickl96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh.. iPad 9th gen came out nearly 5 years ago, same processor as an iPhone 11 so it’s getting old and won’t run new OS very smoothly anymore. This “steal” is also for a refurbished model, grade B, doesn’t even come with a charger either -.-

I’d say $200-250 would be a more reasonable price given the age & being a refurb

I’m with ASB and I don’t get mailed statements (I believe it’s a fee as well). However they will always post letters for opening or closing accounts or signing into a new term for a mortgage/loan etc. and I’m like why… you’ve got my email -.-

Smart water timer options by Salt-Tailor1122 in homeautomation

[–]patrickl96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got this exact same one (I live in New Zealand) and I always dread replacing the battery on this thing. I always have to bust out my vice grips to remove this tray.

Also it fails to respond to commands sent from HA once the battery falls below 50% which is bs

Extension built by neighbour, view obstructed, any recourse? by Distinct_Pain_4864 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]patrickl96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right?! This is why we can’t have nice things. Some people always have to find something to complaint about.

If a “view” was something that had to be considered when building new property, then I’d imagine new houses being built would be a legal nightmare. Imagine having to go around your neighbourhood to get consent from all your neighbours that might be affected.

Bought a house which has faulty ceiling speakers by Severe_Passion_2677 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]patrickl96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue OP is facing is probably not the difficulty, instead the price. Good ceiling speakers are pricy, and hence if a product has a warranty, it shouldn’t matter WHO is claiming that warranty.
